Guys for a type based Lua system what syntaxes do you think would work. I've currently got:

local a : number = 1
local b : boolean = true
local c : string = "hello"
local function d(x:number, y:number):number
    return x + y
end
local function e(x:number, y:number):(number, number)
    return x, y
end

But some bits seem a bit verbose. I'm also not sure how to handle tables or variables assigned to functions.

Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:41
Hm. Interesting.
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:41
-- So you can assign later on. But doesn't seem clear what the data type is.
local a: (number, number):number

local thing:{number} = { 1, 2, 3}
local thing:{string:number} = {thing = 2, another = 3}
They don't seem massively eloquent ways of expressing it though.
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:42
The last line is very clunky
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:42
Yeah, most of the time I will have local thing:auto = whatever or even auto thing = whatever
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:43
I feel like it'd be better to do something like this though:
local int somenumber = 3
local str somestring = "Hello, world" -- or is it string
..etc..
Looks cleaner and is a lot like other langs.
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:44
Yeah, this is a C/Java vs Scala/Typescript.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
May 30 2015 17:44
I like how I do types in Sleek:
let hello @str -> "Hello!"
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:45
I hate that style imo. Long, and complicated.
Takes more time to do that than to str whatever = "string"
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:46
I based it of something Dan wrote and I do think the colon syntax works better for scripting languages but then most people are used to C style type hinting.
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:47
In the end it's your choice :P
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:47
I've based a lot of the language semantics off of TypeScript. Yes it is made by microsoft but has some cool ideas. For instance interfaces aren't used with extends it checks if the structure is the same.
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:48
Bleh, all these unconventional languages.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
May 30 2015 17:48
@RainbowDashDC yea but let uses dynamic typing by default
and you better thank god for the arrow operator
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:49
@DemHydraz if i'm gonna use dynamic then i wont use types at all
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
May 30 2015 17:49
because that expands to let hello @str = @imut "Hello!"
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:49
I feel colon syntax is the way to go just because it is easier to parse - colon comes after the name and as the type declaration will be optional it means I don't have to backtrack.
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
May 30 2015 17:49
anything is easy to parse if you can pattern match well :)
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:50
@RainbowDashDC I'm only doing it because I like the flexibility of dynamic typing and the perks (autocomplete, control flow) of static typing. Trying to merge the two in Lua. I'm trying to avoid using Lua patterns to parse things as I'm trying to make the parser as extensible as possible.
Function and table syntax though. What should I do?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
May 30 2015 17:54
Braces for functions and brackets for tables
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:55

no!
actually yes!
SquidDev
@SquidDev
May 30 2015 17:58
Well, that is even more confusing - which one do you mean? I kinda like using [number, string] to represent multiple return arguments but I'm not sure.

I've thought about it. I'm using [number, whatver] to represent multivalue returns. I don't like either of the table syntaxes but I tried to keep it closest to Lua. I'd love to do number[] instead, but that seems wrong for this language.
@RainbowDashDC Thanks! Should be more interesting once I can get some decent source analysis going. The ultimate aim is a decent editor for Lua but this Eclipse project also looks promising. I might even be able to do Lua -> JS convertion.

if I have a format like such:

L = line, not really there.

-- version, inodes, size
L1: 1.0,1,size

-- path, name,file contents(L-L)
L2: /,file.lua,3-3

-- contents
L3: Hello, world

Would I want to preallocate a space for inodes, or would I want to dynamically update line locations for the contents on each inode addition?
