Tatoeba uses Sphinx as a search engine, and therefore not all the code for the search will be in Tatoeba's codebase.
But it's probably not the only place that handles the search feature.

@RyckRichards
Please, how I fork my own repo? It's been a long time I didn't use that
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
@RyckRichards to fork on github, simply go to the repo's page and click the fork button on the upper right, besides "watch" and "star"
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
Thanks a lot :D
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
you're welcome!
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
@blueridanus Should I clone Tatoeba repository - https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/ or my fork https://github.com/RyckRichards/tatoeba2 ?
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
depends on what you wish to do
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
to create pull requests for Tatoeba. I add languages
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
in that case, you can use the fork you already have
just make changes to your own repo, then push to tatoeba

@SafaAlfulaij
Hi @trang :)
So suppose that we need to ignore some characters while searching (both in the search query and the database/search results)
Is that something we can implement in Tatoeba's source code, or we should go and check Sphinx search engine?
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
perfect. Thank you so much
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
:grinning:
lsrdg
@lsrdg
@RyckRichards , you might want to git pull as well before changing any thing. If you forked it a long time ago, your fork can be outdated and that will give you conflicts to solve before making a pull request to Tatoeba.
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
yes, you're right. Now I'm trying to figure out how do I add https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/ as upstream
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
great. Now how can I update my repo?'git fetch' ?
'git fetch'
lsrdg
@lsrdg
the first link above ;)
Ricardo14
@RyckRichards
oh thanks

something that currently bothers me a bit is that there are multiple projects related to Tatoeba's goals floating around, with new ones every once in a while popping up
fragmentation of efforts is very likely slowing the availability of open, quality datasets of sentence examples, I'd say
each one of them presents itself as working towards a certain objective; but that doesn't make any of the projects fundamentally different, because the efforts and possibilities of usage are always the same
Davi Silva
@blueridanus
but I guess it shouldn't matter too much if in the end you can just download everything and merge in a large dataset. but it may not be that simple, and there's still replicated effort in infrastructure too
hmm... it's probably related to licenses.

@trang
@blueridanus We've actually been in touch with Common Voice for a few months now :) I posted shortly about it a while ago on the Wall https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/show_message/28540#message_28540
So at least for the case of Common Voice, you can be reassured that efforts will not be too fragmented.

@SafaAlfulaij

Sounds like that's something to do in Tatoeba's code.

@trang
@RyckRichards You also have this guide to submit pull requests to Tatoeba: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/wiki/Guidelines-for-submitting-pull-requests. There are some additional useful links you may want to check out to understand better how pull requests work.
Safa Alfulaij
@SafaAlfulaij

Great! Thanks @trang
I'll try working in this small fix next week.

And maybe the RTL layout as well :p

Davi Silva
@blueridanus
@trang that's very reassuring! thanks.

I get this whenever I try to acess the dev tatoeba on Chrome (Windows 10)

Hi there, I have a suggestion for a new feature (if feasible): it would be nice to have open source tools that optionally (that is, one can choose to show or hide it) generates for sentences the phonetic transcription, so one can have a more specialized way to see how a sentence is pronounced

@GrizaLeono
For Esperanto this has no sence, because this language is absolutely phonetical. :-) If I need to know how to pronounce an an English word, I use Google translate.... and then I do not know if it is British or US-pronunciation.

@GrizaLeono
@Guybrush88 Thank you. I see, but I wonder how much people know this alphabet. I have seen it at school 65 years ago. But I never used it. Maybe it is useful for other people.
Guybrush88
@Guybrush88
@GrizaLeono maybe it's useful for people who are interested in a more specialized type of linguistics

I get this on dev when I'm on profile -= http://prntscr.com/jke2km

@Guybrush88
@RyckRichards it seems that each page on dev contains a sort of debug section with some related info about it (it's just a guess)
