In 2018 I started a feature list of the infamous UltraStar CMD (Challenge, Medley, Duet) version of UltraStar. Maybe this can also be some inspiration for good features. UltraStar-Deluxe/USDX#361
there are many corner case features which make it difficult to not end up with feature creep. Imho, I'd suggest focusing on features which are more urgent because there doesn't yet exist a good solution for them. That for example includes online multiplayer support where the players all have the same usdx files already, and thus multiplayer mode could be possible. That would allow online tournaments / competitions and thus could get open source karaoke back into the usual events list of online conventions / meetups.

Maybe we should try to contact them and talk about the zip file format and a song content registry? I could write a server reference implementation for that but am currently not sure what the requirements are and how stuff like the API and workflow should be designed
a legal implementation could be like this: Alice is a registered at Samplestore, who also sell licensed karaoke music. Alice bought a tons of music content, more than fits on their phone's memory. USP could have some integration into such a store, which allows Alice to find and one-click download+"install" content or remove content again form the phone.
In countries where music licensing is not as complicated or when using only creative commons content (or similar), such a "store" could include free content which is available even for unregistered users.

lets assume you can identify a sheme behind the offering from usdb.eu > the user could create an external source of songs which can be specified by an URL for retrieving the song list and details, an zip file scheme etc.
software would be legal since you will not ship an illegal downloading mechanism but in contries with lax copyrights it would be ok to add these sites as source
OR you have two different binaries and you can let the customer decide on what to download, depending on legal requirements of the downlaoders country.
@bwestpha:matrix.org something like this is already somewhat implemented in UltraStar Play. It is however missing some songs discovery + selective songs download way. It already has the download from url feature with progress display, unpacks the zip file into the fitting folder and so on.
the travis build is using unity 2021.1.1f1, which should work
I would not bother upgrading to new Unity before they release 2021.2 (which should be soon)
Also works with The SingStar USB mic on the Shield. Only issue is playing AVI encoded tracks but pretty awesome.

I am not sure if the code for that changed already but I had a pretty nice idea for gameplay. So row positions are calculated by the average midi note of the current sentence right? So if all notes have the same pitch they'll be in the middle and it'd look like its the same pitch as the last sentence. On my web version I tried making that average midi note influenced by whatever the the average midi note for the last sentence was. (took the average of the old and the new) That way it looks a lot better. Could probably be improved for large jumps but it's a nice QOL thing.
