@JoelLinn
wow it saved just now, tried a dozen times over the last hours and got a number of different errors. don't know if it was spurious or one of the options i played with

@JoelLinn
@jr-santos98 build a newer image with the debian cloud image scripts https://wolke.linn.io/s/AKxqLySKCDfTRYY
Иван Сердюк
@oceanfish81_twitter

@oceanfish81_twitter You can try to build this project on OpenPower server, with a ppc64be image

I don't have access to a physical servers, with such an arch.

Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
welll.. you can use the MiniCloud...
there is a ppc64BE image on it...
Debian PPC64 - BE
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@JoelLinn let me known if you need any specific image at Minicloud.
Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
I just rebuilt the deb 11 ppc64 be image as I noticed people are actually using it and i get pinged in random github issues and wanted to test it

@JoelLinn let me known if you need any specific image at Minicloud.

And why are those Minicloud instance are all targeting Qemu?
Why no bare metal hosting options?

I just rebuilt the deb 11 ppc64 be image as I noticed people are actually using it and i get pinged in random github issues and wanted to test it

Too bad that there is no Qemu emulation of POWER variation, which allows virt. capabilities. Otherwise we could test CNCF projects

@jr-santos98 build a newer image with the debian cloud image scripts https://wolke.linn.io/s/AKxqLySKCDfTRYY

@JoelLinn I realized just now that it is the developing version of Debian. Because of this, in addition to adding the new image, I too renamed and added build date. The new image was named "Debian 11/sid ppc64 - BE (01/2021)"

Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
is there any way to extend the account oneself? I figured logging in now and then doesnt suffice
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@JoelLinn nope, you need to request. @jr-santos98 can you handle this and add @JoelLinn as a long term user?
Junior Santos
@jr-santos98
@rpsene @JoelLinn Done! User added as a long term user.
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
We are starting the development of a new backend for the ELENA language ( https://github.com/ELENA-LANG/elena-lang ) compiler, to generate ppc64le code, and all tests are being done on Unicamp's servers, so, thank you very much for the free access to the servers
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
nice!
@bencz let us know if you need something more.

Folks, Minicloud will be down until we get the refrigeration issue solved.

Anyone interested to work on aguinet/dragonffi#61 ?
Joao Silva
@joaomas
@rpsene does the refrigeration issue persist? the are any prediction to solve that?
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@joaomas yep, full maintanance scheduled for tomorrow. If everything works, we should be back this weekend.

Good news, thanks.

Good morning guys, I'm having trouble connecting remotely to the ubuntu desktop that I installed on the fly. The first attempt was with the NoMachine program, I was unsuccessful in the installation. The second attempt was with xrdp, I was able to install it and activate it, however at the time of connection on the remote desktop the following error: "It was not possible to connect to the remote desktop".

thank you in advance, sorry for the size of the message, I tried to describe the problem well.

I have already enabled ports on the TCP (3389) and (4000) protocols
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@wellingtonlopes57 it will not be possible.
although you can enable ports in your account; we block everything but 22.
we only offer ssh
nothing else
you can create an ssh tunnel though...
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
@JoelLinn , did you build this Debian Images using a Power8 instructions ?
Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
The first one I built on LE using qemu(-static). (The scripts run apt in a chroot).
Once there is a running debian ppc64be system, one can build a new image without using cpu emulation
that should be a tad faster
where you trying to create a new one @bencz ?
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
@JoelLinn I'm not trying ... actually, I don't know how to compile Debian and all of its dependencies ...
I believe that compiling Debian BE, with the gcc option "-mcpu = power8", can improve performance a little ...
After analyzing a lot of assembly code, by godbolt, here is an example of the comparisons I was making (https://godbolt.org/z/e1M7z444e), I found some interesting differences, in the opcodes and even in the structure of the generated code. it may be that we have an interesting performance gain, when compiling Debian BE using this gcc instruction

@bencz: building the whole OS from source will take time. Be prepared. 15+ years ago I tried something similar to what you are thinking, but with an x86 machine (Pentium IV at that time) and Gentoo (where building from source is the default option). After tuning the build process to my very specific version of processor and rebuilding the whole system, I can say to you that I didn't notice any difference in the usual day-to-day performance (e-mail, web browsing, etc.). Things may have changed, of course, as this was a long time ago, but my educated guess is that you should worry about this only for specific applications that really require more performance or for libraries widely used in the system, such as glibc.
Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
@bencz ppc64(be) debian still supports old powermacs, and probably even playstation 3 and xbox360 with custom kernels.... If someone wants newer instructions they will just say use ppc64le I guess. IIRC there where quite some discussions when they made the switch to require newer power arch at some point...
And indeed no source was compiled at all when I generated the images. Binaries are all in the debian ports repo, so all the script does is first unpack a predefined minimal set of debs from the repo and then chroot into it and install the rest using the apt it unpacked manually before
Joao Silva
@joaomas
Is it possible import .ova in enviroment?
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@joaomas nope!
you may need to convert to qcow or raw

hi, when can I expect to hear back from yesterday’s request for access?
mirabilos
@mirabilos
ok, I heard back, but I can’t figure out how to make the ssh port available
ah, it’s not in the machine config…
