Ubuntu 22.04 LTS To Shift Its PPC64EL Baseline To POWER9 CPUs, Dropping POWER8 🥲
STown2017
@STown2017
hi all
guys, please , need an advice to run powerpcspe platform with QUEMU. its all ok with PPC64, but still cant run correctly powerpcspe edition. please can anyone post working cmdline parameters to run 12-14 Freebsd PPCSPE version?

@STown2017: I would suggest you to ask in the FreeBSD channels at efnet... not sure if there will be too many users of FreeBSD here. I asked to some FreeBSD folks I know that are working with ppc64, but I doubt I will get an answer today.
STown2017
@STown2017
generally, i need to be able to run ANY ppc machine that supports SPE instructions extension
as i know there are e500 processors family

I have to say I know nothing about SPE instruction extenstion. Everytime I hear that I remember the Cell/B.E. synergistic processors, also called SPE, but I am pretty sure this should be somehting else.

@STown2017
please, need advice, how to correctly install FreeBSD-12.0-RELEASE-powerpc-powerpcspe-dvd1.iso with QEMU ? seems i need to make cmdline with kernel and initrd, but where to get it for qemu?

Hi @STown2017 I was able to briefly talk with some guys in the FreeBSD community about your previous question on powerpcspe... they didn't know the answer, but they asked in IRC (#powerpc64 channel on EFNet). They didn't get an answer yet AFACIT. I suggest you to join that IRC channel and ask directly there. The folks I talked to said that there is indeed people using powerpcspe there and this topic has been discussed more than once.

@STown2017: Were you able to joint he IRC channel? One of the guys I am talking to was able to boot a powerpcspe with QEMU, but there are some limitations. Instead of myself being the middle man, maybe you should reach out directly to him through IRC. What do you think?

@jr-santos98 build a newer image with the debian cloud image scripts https://wolke.linn.io/s/AKxqLySKCDfTRYY

Current debian BE images are quite old and can't be easily upgraded (due to repo gpg key change plus other issues).
I already tried rebuilding last year but there were conflicts in the debian-ports repo.

I was now able to build an up to date image again with my updated fork of the debian-cloud-images tool https://github.com/JoelLinn/debian-cloud-images .

@jr-santos98 Could you make the new image publicly available again, donwload link didn't change from last time

Junior Santos
@jr-santos98
@JoelLinn New image avaliable. Sorry for the delay. The image name is "Debian 11/sid ppc64 - BE (02/2022)".
Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
thanks no problem. everyone is able to upload their own images but its great to easily be available for the community
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
Is there any plan to turn power9 back on?
Junior Santos
@jr-santos98
@bencz We are finishing setting up a new network. Once this is done, the minicloud will be the next step.
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
Nice!
Ubuntu is the first to stop supporting Power8... I have my doubts if Debian will stop supporting P8... but, we don't know... Fedora, RedHat and others, have also warned about the end of support for Power8, Ubuntu will stop supporting Power8 in July, the last update of Ubutnu no longer works on Power8
Joel Linn
@JoelLinn
debian will very likely still support is as a port
just like they do ppc64
but no official images then...
Alexandre Bencz
@bencz
IBM could give some p10 to put in the Unicamp 👀
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@bencz P10 will be aviable in the cloud for developers at some point this year. It is hard even for us to get one :)

@adalava
Hi just to let you know I opened Unicamp-OpenPower/minicloud#40, regarding openstack ports. I recall it used to work in the past but I don't use it for a long time. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm trying to run my VM in the Minicloud with cap-nested-hv=true, does anyone knows how to configure that (maybe a metadata entry or something else)?
laggarcia
@laggarcia:matrix.org
[m]
IIRC you would need a POWER9 machine. And in the Minicloud you usually get access to a VM already. So, in order to use nested, the VM you are running on needs this capability. I don't think this is configured by default. I suppose an admin would need to enable this for you.
Rafael Sene
@rpsene
@jr-santos98 can you check? As the P9s are not in the cloud maybe it will not be possible for now.

Hello everyone. I'm trying to request access as well, but the form is currently "no longer accepting responses".

In the requisition form from the university of oregon, it is necessary to inform the IBM Advocate... unfortunately I don't have it... does anyone know any other provider that can be used, that does not have to inform the code of an IBM certificate?
jennamurillo
@jennamurillo

Hello all, I want to communicate that IBM has no intentions of ending the 20 year relationship with Unicamp, as the longstanding partnership upholds immense value to the IBM corporation. We at IBM are merely transforming the partnership to be more focused on Power research. While the sunset of the Unicamp minicloud is an effort to comply with corporate regulations and is out of our control, we have prepared to supplement this loss by transitioning all Unicamp projects to the OpenStack environment that currently exists at Oregon State University (OSU) Open Source Lab. One benefit of this transition is that everyone at Unicamp who requests resources at OSU will instantly have access to the newer and more advanced Power hardware, including P10, in the near future.

We strongly encourage all Unicamp project owners to transition their projects to the Power Hardware available at OSU. You can request these resources using the links provided below.
OpenStack VM at OSU: https://osuosl.org/services/powerdev/request_hosting/
Jenkins CI service at OSU https://osuosl.org/services/powerdev/request_powerci/
https://osuosl.org/services/ibm-z/request_ci/
The turnaround time typically takes 2 to 3 days but should not take longer than 7 days. We have communicated these projects' importance to the OSU team to ensure that all Unicamp projects are moved easily and quickly.
If you do not already have an IBM Advocate, you can list Stan Gowen (sgowen@us.ibm.com) as your advocate, as he is now leading the efforts at IBM. We at IBM are preparing to offer a variety of additional resources as we undergo this transformation to ensure the vitality of Unicamp, which I will communicate in this channel in the coming weeks.
