    @GeneMosher This is the ViewTouch room
    @GeneMosher here!
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    OK, I'm here.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    OK, thanks for that.

    @zcassini
    i use the standalone gitter client, it doesnt givea url of the romm you are in. I had to go search for it.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    I've bookmarked it to find it easily again.
    at GitHub I found and added a badge, I think. The tie-in between gitter and github is a new idea for me.
    I'll leave this page open and check back throughout the day to see if anyone needs help.
    Zac Cassini
    @zcassini
    Gitter has a standalone app that can give notifications if you want.
    I use a different app called Franz to handle Gitter, Slack, Google Hangouts etc.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    I see. I spend most of my time taking care of restaurant operators using ViewTouch and I'm not so much in the loop with all the new stuff going on these days.
    Is Franz the standalone app you're referring to?
    Zac Cassini
    @zcassini
    yes it is
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    I'll likely use it, then. Again, thanks. My initial impression is that gitter is a better place to be spending my time than reddit.

    In the basement I've got an old micros I was gonna turn into a jukebox. Drivers didn't work out for me though.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    Larry Ellison bought Micros for 5.4 billion about 3 years ago.
    Zac Cassini
    @zcassini
    wow I didn't realise that.
    With gitter though no one is gonna stumble across this chat room. You'll need posts on reddit or wherever to direct people here.

    They had 800 million in the bank so he really only paid 4.6 billion. NCR also bought a restaurant POS company for $1.25 billion - cash. POS has become a big part of our world.
    Zac Cassini
    @zcassini
    I'm right by NCR's old HQ in Dayton.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    What I would like to see is ViewTouch under the GPL3 become a POS killer. I also have ideas about how to have done to POS what POS did to cash registers - make them obsolete.
    It was a long hard job to kill the cash register industry. It will be a hard job killing the POS industry, too, but it needs to happen.
    That's a narrative for another day, though.

    @zcassini
    Nobody seems to be getting any kind of traction in mobile payments at retail.
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    The list of players is a very long one, and the amount of money available to some of them is very large. POS has been subverted by the payment processors.
    Everybody wants to make money on every conceivable type of transaction. There are companies, as we all know, with a virtual license to print money. And they can buy all the MSM propaganda they want to.
    I have to run - grandkids are visiting today. Hope I can offer you something that interests and/or helps you, Zac.

    @zcassini
    nice talking with ya Gene

    As of Saturday, June 4, there are some new features in ViewTouch point of sale, which can be accessed at github. One of them is designed to make point of sale easier for operation by a bartender. The bartender's own display can be given special behavior; when a bartender enters an order on their own display there is no need for the bartender to have a printed ticket so there won't be one. The only tickets a bartender will see are those which come from other servers throughout the restaurant or bar. Another feature allows the bartender to sell the drinks which the bartender enters at a price which includes sales tax so that the bartender doesn't have to make change which deals with pennies, nickels and dimes, and maybe not even with quarters. The bar drinks entered at other displays for customers at tables, however, can still have sales tax added to them. This keeps things moving smoothly at the bar, letting the bartender focus on making drinks instead of spending time doing things on the POS which aren't really necessary.
    The documentation for ViewTouch point of sale is integrated into the program itself, appearing in the context of where it is needed and useful. Another new feature is expanded support for happy hour at bars and restaurants. ViewTouch can now be compiled under GCC 6.1, in the latest version of C++14.

    I think I have is installed correctly, but I am getting this message now "Unable to find jump target (-1, 9) for ViewTouch Host"..Do I need a touch screen or will this work on my laptop with a mouse?
    Gene Mosher
    @GeneMosher
    Something which is very important because everyone needs it is the file that can be downloaded from http://www.viewtouch.com/vt_data.html. This file belongs in /usr/viewtouch/bin. Something else that's very important is to use a touchscreen monitor which displays 1080p.
