After considerable experimentation, I can't determine how the client determines if a chair back should overwrite a mobile.
There's no consistent flag in a bench, which never overwrites a mobile sprite, that is not present in a chair, which should overwrite. Or vice versa.
I encourage anyone else to take a look at it. I'm merging what I have. :)
So, sitting is in! It just looks a little poor when sprites are facing away. Also I don't have the offsets working exactly like the legacy client, but it's very close, within a few pixels.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, UO is probably my favorite game I've ever played...
...but everything about the client is bizarre, nonsensical, and crufty.
Shame it was done on such a shoestring budget.
But then again, kudos to the UO team for delivering an amazing product on the aforementioned budget while the rest of origin's projects spiraled out of control with regards to team size, money spent, and features in general.
In other news, third year of law school starts the day after labor day!
Honestly excited to get back to class - but sad that my involvement with the xna client will have to decrease.
