I would love to help and contribute, already invested several hours in investigating this issue
but I have to consult with someone about the solution and the logic behind the code

It seems like its working as intended
anything inside of a disabled tab is disabled
can md-tooltip be used as an attribute directive, perhaps?
its possible that it would work as <md-tab md-tooltip="" disabled>
i have no idea though

The issue is caused when you add a tooltip inside a disabled tab. The tooltip will not work (and it seems that the intention was that it will work)
the first issue was with ng-disabled
putting hard code "disable" solves the first issue

putting hard code "disabled" solves the first issue (or even disabled={{expr}})

did you try putting the tooltip as an attribute directive?
while using ng-disabled?
its worth a shot

the material datepicker isn't even really viable for desktop apps - it's way too slow
takes up too much space

i've seen the design spec, but how do you know that it runs slow ?
that one is pretty neat though , thanks for the tip

The Angular Material datepicker is coming, we lost the person who was working on it to another project. It's also a really tricky component to get right for accessibility, which is a requirement for Angular Material.
Also the spec for it is very mobile-focused indeed, and doesn't include things like date ranges or milliseconds. So it needs more attention.
