@epelc you are saying that md-primary should be allowed as a placeholder color ? I think the way it's currently implemented in Angular Material, it's great. Having a non muted color, for example 700 # 0288d1 ( from here is just silly I think )
Ed Pelc
@epelc
I thought it was already md-primary. I'm fine with it just being a muted color I have no use for the md-primary class on an input I thought it might make it easier to switch over though
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
I'm talking UX, not MAterial. I like how Material has this implemented, but I just wanted to check with some UX experts if they believe using your primary website's color as your input placeholder text color is something they would ever do ? I think it's a gross style violation, and yet I've seen some people do it ... Would you guys color your navbar with the 700 color, then color your placeholder text with the same color ?
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
yyeeeaahhhhhhhh... no
i think that would be confusing
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
right :) I have yet to see placeholders colored something else other than dim gray or black at the very least
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
"I think it's a gross style violation, and yet I've seen some people do it"
where have you seen it done
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
@Awk34 in a proposed design. so i wanted to double check if i'm crazy. since i myself am not a designer, but it felt so awkward seing it
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
im not either, but i'd like to think im pretty good at design
Marcy Sutton
@marcysutton
@kosz the reason that is a bad idea for UX is that the placeholder will look like content that has been filled in. Admittedly the placeholder color in Material Design is too faint though, especially for accessibility.
Miloš Stanić
@MilosStanic
I also think placeholders in MD are too faint.

What is the jquery dependency for in lumx?
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
This isn't the place to ask about that
bastienJS
@bastienJS
yes I got confused about lumx and material angular
seems both are not connected
Eric
@calidion
seems lumx has more examples and is more mobile oriented.
Miloš Stanić
@MilosStanic
hi guys, my sidenav doesn't fill entire screen height on mobile, but it does on desktop. Any clues?

@mtraynham
If anyone is using TypeScript, I've submitted type definitions here: borisyankov/DefinitelyTyped#3832 Wouldn't mind if someone could validate them for me. You might see some things that aren't in the API, but were found during debugging.

@kdela
Hi there
Does anybody know why $mdMedia returns different values in views and controllers?

@samuba
Thanks alot for that @mtraynham : )

@abedurftig
Hi folks,
I have questions about the material start project. I noticed that the side-nav toggle button calls a method called "toggleList" which is a reference to a method called "toggleUsersList" also defined in the controller. When I call the "toggleUsersList" method rather than the reference "toggleList" it does not work anymore.
The buttons on the side-nav call a method called "selectUser" to change the selected user.
  • What is the purpose/benefit of assigning the method "toggleUsersList" to a field called "toggleList"?
  • Why does it not work anymore when I call the "toggleUsersList" method directly?
Shristi Sharma
@Shrizzy
Because of this code here @abedurftig : var self = this;
    self.selected     = null;
    self.users        = [ ];
    self.selectUser   = selectUser;
    self.toggleList   = toggleUsersList;
    self.share        = share;
If you'd like to call it directly, you could change it to this.toggleUsersList = function {

anyone know if there's a way to do a custom build of lumx?
we really want to rip it out of our app, but we're hanging on to the menu component for now
Matt Traynham
@mtraynham
@dmackerman the dropdown directive or the select one? The dropdown looks pretty self contained: https://github.com/lumapps/lumX/blob/master/modules/dropdown/js/dropdown_directive.js
Matt Traynham
@mtraynham
As does the select. Since git doesn't support checking out a sub-tree of a repo, I'd recommend svn to just pull out the directory you want and build it yourself.
That or clone the whole repo and modify the gulp file to build only what you want.
Dave Ackerman
@dmackerman
yeah, cool
Dave Ackerman
@dmackerman
when is the menu component dropping? :smile:
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
We are using material. My team is undecided if to start complying with aria warnings, or try to disable it so it doesn't bother us. Are there ways to turn it off ? Or are the good arguments I can provide so that we don't try to get rid of it ?
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
like for not including an aria-label?
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
@Awk34 yes. So far people in our team have ignored it completely, now we have A LOT of aria warnings everywhere
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
I would just start using them
It's not just an angular material thing
Cosmin Ronnin
@kosz
Yes but angular material embeds it in such a way that it produces a lot of noise if you want the beautiful style of Material but don't want to deal with Aria. I personally would use them. But my team is a bit more conservative.
Dave Ackerman
@dmackerman
man, is there a pure CSS dropdown menu out there somewhere?
Andrew Koroluk
@Awk34
@marcysutton see @kosz
:P
Marcy Sutton
@marcysutton
@kosz are you using a lot of icon buttons? Where are you getting the warnings? I think your team should listen to what the warnings are telling you (make your app accessible) :)
aria-label is a mechanism to provide a label on something that needs it, without having to add a visual label
but if there are bugs with the warnings, I want to know so we can make them better
