Did MumbeLink get removed?
I just tried accessing it, and got a file not found error, Sysinternals Process Explorer isn't listing any handles for it either
Steven Liekens
@StevenLiekens
Feb 04 2016 00:38
the game client doesn't create the file, it only updates it if it already exists
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:39
ah, so I need to create it myself
Steven Liekens
@StevenLiekens
Feb 04 2016 00:39
yes
although it does seem to close the file when you close the game client (?)
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:40
okay, so CreateFileMapping instead of OpenFileMapping
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:45
@StevenLiekens afaik the process that owns the memory mapped file can fully close it
though i might be wrong about that, memory mapped files exist for a very long time, who knows what microsoft thought of in that time :P
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:48
hm
so does it make more sense to close the file when my program exits, or leave it open for gw2?
that seems messy leaving it open, but then if another process is also using the file I created, wouldn't it have issues if the file closed on it?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:50
i honestly don't know, it's possible that windows keeps track of the amount of references when a memory mapped file is shared
and closes it automatically if no process uses it anymore
I'm not really sure either :/
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:52
btw, for initializing the MMF, you would probably want to open if it exists, and create if not
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:54
Yea, that's what I did, seems to be working-ish
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:54
reading my old testing code for viewing everything in the MMF, it seems i never close the MMF
if i close that application while gw2 is running, gw2 happily keeps writing to the MMF
when i open the application again, i can clearly see that the uiTick value has gone up a bit :D
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:55
hm
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:56
it seems to reset when both my application and gw2 are closed
i can't recall what happens if i keep my application running and restart gw2
what language are you using?
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:57
C/C++
uiTick I'm guessing is changed each time it writes new values?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:58
yes, every frame
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 00:59
so it updates the values fairly often
Okay, this is annoying
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 00:59
that's the protocol, with this value you can see whether the data has been updated or not
^ that page is the one that turns up on google search results
and it doesn't have a link to the API:MumbleLink page
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:01
oh, the mumble link page has actual data now
i had to figure out how stuff worked by reading this mess: https://wiki.mumble.info/wiki/Link
didn't really help as i was doing this in c#
well, the code example wasn't really helping
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 01:02
yea
I guess some examples of working with it would be useful to have on the API pages too
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:05
btw, why do people want to use those preprocessor #if _WIN32 stuff for UINT32 etc... you can just use the general uint32_t, i think the latest VS versions should have it
I never understood why people don't use cstdint types :/
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:08
the whole winapi library is a mess XD
if you decide to use it in one place, you have to include it everywhere
at least, that's my experience
oh, and not to forget, when i include it in an existing source file, it leads to compiler errors and warnings here :cry:
so yeah, best to just stay with C++11 or C++14 unless you really need the winapi :D
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 01:10
so many of those -.-
in addition to all the LP* stuff
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:12
oh, that reminds me, @Iye, is there any chance that the world_id ever gets changed back to the actual world_id before you go on your adventure of a socket api in the far, far, far future?
There was some weird dependency issue last time I looked into that.
I can look into it again; open up an issue for it so it doesn't get lost in the mists
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:13
dependency issue? :worried:
long story
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:16
oh, i did remember correctly it was discussed some time ago: #14
not really on topic for that issue though, or PR
Ah yeah, just open a new one and ref it
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:18
will do

I'll make a new one for the world_id field fix at some point.

I'm such a tease

Archomeda

i hope you are able to fix it :)
i think it does show the correct value in wvw though
Ryan Mast

hm... maybe I should call closehandle after all...
Archomeda @Archomeda is checking

Feb 04 2016 01:24
that mumble link stuff still scares me
me too :<
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:25
haha, i was about to say, don't worry, i'm sure it scares @Iye too :D
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 01:25
yea, should get rid of it ;)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:25
oh nope, wvw is also wrong :D
{"name": "Reiga Fiercecrusher","profession": 2,"race": 1,"map_id": 38,"world_id": 2147483651,"team_color_id": 55,"commander": false,"fov": 1.222} haha
hmm actually that looks right
cast to unsigned and mask off the high 3 bits
might actually be a fairly easy fix, I'll have to check it tomorrow though :sleepy:
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:27
any fast way to do that without opening up a VS instance?
install FreeBSD :)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:28
or any other non windows operating system, arch <3
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:28
that's not a fast way if you do not have it installed :P
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:28
I can install arch in 15m
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:29
might be because I broke it soo many times
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:30
actually, that number seems to be unsigned already
it's the same as shardId and i think i coded that as uint in c#
which means that it has to be equal with 2003 in some way, but i don't think it does :P
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 01:31
bitand[x, 3758096384] at wolframalpha.com if you just want to know the number seems to work
yeah but the value isn't right
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:32
they seem to be the same in every wvw instance
so something is right there :P
eotm gives me 3221225473
guild hall gives 2003 \o/
IIRC it's reading the current map shard id, which post-megaservers is mostly meaningless (aside from, say, guild halls)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:34
must be yeah, both shardId and world_id are the same
always
i think that dungeons, fractals, home instances, story instances, etc are also bound to the world_id it's been opened
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 01:35
yep
Maybe, but that's probably an implementation detail.
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 01:36
you'll often see in fractals character name (world)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:40
indeed
it's still funny though, worlds mostly don't mean anything anymore, only in wvw it still does
why do we still have guesting? :P
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:42
the good times
I remember going to Desolation way back because RoF failed to do Tequatl
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:42
i imagined that guesting was a temporary measure before the megaservers went live
oh, i did that with scarlet's attack on LA
i'm just glad we don't have that anymore
even though i hate the current way of hopping instances etc, it's still way better than having to guest
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:44
can you imagine playing the game from 2012, soo much stuff is soo much better
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:44
wallet! :D
but yeah, it's great that even though people (me included) tend to complain a lot about stuff, QoL improvements are still being made (with success most of the time)
and i'm still stuck at the same puzzle in the witness :(
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:48
I am pretty sure its like the bias people get when something is 95% right. You know the NS (dutch national railway) right, those trains are on time 95% of the time, but still people are complaining... In other parts of the world trains are on time 60% of the time and no-one bats an eye
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:48
haha
i also complain about the NS, but it's more like, that if they change the schedule because of snow (or whatever), the trains are sooooo short
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:49
live in the eastern part
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:49
the trains have the same length, but the amount of trains are halved... yeah great
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:49
I almost never have a full train, most of the time they are on time, etc.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:49
then i have to wait for at least another 15-30 minutes for a not-so-full train
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:50
ah! My fractal thing did not break with todays achievement
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:50
it's the part between rotterdam and delft, just 2 tracks, if something breaks there, good luck getting somewhere
every 5 minutes there's a train :P and that's only 1 direction
gz :)
finally i solved the damn puzzle
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:55

Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:55

funny how those things work
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 01:56
yep, same goes for programming, either tell it to a peer or go to the toilet or something :P
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 01:56
yeah :D
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 02:33
for fCameraTop and fAvatarTop, I'm only getting 0's
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 02:44
ahh, mumble also uses the "y" coordinate as up <_<
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 02:44
thats not too senseless right?
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 02:46
yea...
also mumble using meters instead of inches v.v
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 02:47
is it meters or units?
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 02:47
meters
converting from meters to inches makes things match up with all other gw locations
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 02:48
well, the mumble link API is an api for mumble specific
and mumble apparantly calculate Y as up, and uses meters rather then inches
Ryan Mast
@nightlark
Feb 04 2016 02:48
from the looks of it, might also be some weird +/- stuff going on
mumble uses a left-handed coordinate system
David Reeß

Feb 04 2016 04:51
@lye not sure if that info is for the public, but what is the rate limit on https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/eu/achievements?page=0&pjax=1 (and the stance on crawling that :smile:)?
Because trying to crawl that, the rate limit seems to be pretty harsh
queicherius: honestly not a clue, I didn't realize it was rate-limited
I should probably just expose the leaderboards as an API endpoint
maybe will do that after I get done with all this pvp stuff
Simon Amor
@simonamor
Feb 04 2016 09:22
@lye: "oh you know what? I never turned on /v2/guild/:id/log" - {"text":"API not active"} still not live then?
11GBit internet via copper lines
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 14:56
@codemasher wow, i wouldn't want to be that guy and accidentally twist a cable or two there :P
but that's quite some improvement on copper lines
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 14:59

Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 18:28

so we had more pressing concerns to figure out
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 18:29
wow, what happened?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 18:29
massive spikes of traffic

uhh, i was updateing the database only once or twice... :D
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 18:30
long-term we're going to need to start ip rate limiting API access
avoided it as long as we could but oh well
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 18:30
thats a good idea (i think it has been suggested on the forums more than once!)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Feb 04 2016 18:31
well batching calls is easy with this api
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 18:32
i must have called the API ~2700 times yesterday
around noon CET
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 18:33
@tivac was that what all the "Could not connect to guild server" messages were last night?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 18:34
potentially?
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 18:35
in fairness to @lye, /v2/items almost took down GW2 yesterday
@codemasher it was like 4k requests/minute that did it
about 4-5 hours after you did your scrape
anyway, we're decoupling the shared services that caused the failure
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:06
wasn't that when the guys were testing how fast they can scrape the API?
so in the future an excess of traffic to the API won't have any effects on other systems
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 19:06
wasnt me :D
was just quoting the times from tests we did months prior
again this was 4k requests/minute
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:07
i mean, things like these are actually nice to test out the API's limits - but once the game is affected, it's no fun anymore
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 19:12
like @lye said, we're decoupling the shared infra that caused the issue to at least limit the damage that can be caused
and then we're LOCKING IT DOWN
(not really, the limits should be pretty reasonable)
(aka don't request every item in every language with 1 item/request)
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 19:13
Was that 4k/minute from a single IP?
no idea, our ARR boxes weren't keeping request logs
(gonna get that fixed too)
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 19:15
but requesting every item in every language (266 pages * 5 languages = 1330 requests) in < 1 minute is still ok?
I don't have any numbers yet
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 19:16
we're gonna surprise you
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:16
i'm pretty sure the servers don't much like such spikes :D
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Feb 04 2016 19:16
:tada:
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:17
i mean, i scraped the same amount, twice the requests since i use page_size 100 but in ~12 min
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 19:17
1330 requests for all items currently is actually pretty close to those 4k requests
@simonamor: /v2/guild/:id/log is turned on for real this time
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 19:18
THANKS!
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 19:20
@darthmaim I imagine the problem was not just 4k requests in one minute, but 4k requests/minute for many minutes (or hours).
yeah it was about 2 hours
like I don't even know
really wish I had those request logs so I could understand what they were trying to do, at least
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 19:20
ye, that would be interesting
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:20
indeed
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 19:21
Could have just been a bug in somebody's code. Because I totally never accidentally spammed /v2/wvw/matches once.
well, /v2/wvw/matches and /v2/commerce/prices normally get 4k requests/minute
David Reeß
@queicherius
Feb 04 2016 19:27
I hope the rate limits arent gonna be too harsh :( looks at script that updates account stats for 80k api keys
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Feb 04 2016 19:27
Well, I normally requests /v2/wvw/matches once every 5 seconds, the bug caused me to request multiple times per second and the number of requests increased exponentially. Fortunately I found the bug fairly quickly.
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:28
@lye time in this image is PDT?
@codemasher yes
@queicherius, yeah, I really want to make sure that the rate limit has no effect on existing applications
because the normal load we have is totally fine
David Reeß
@queicherius
Feb 04 2016 19:30
@Nabrok I had a similar bug like that once... it was basically retrying a few times when a request failed because the API was having issues. Problem was that it retried errors on efficiency too, and when I introduced a bug all clients eventually DDoS'd our server - only killed the server. >_>
smiley
@codemasher
Feb 04 2016 19:30
i mean, implementing a little throttling isn't hard
David Reeß
@queicherius

we store the last N entries of each log type
I forget what N is, maybe 100?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 19:35
Yes. Due to our log retention policies, the dataset size is fixed at ~100 entries/type
but maybe you just guessed there too :D

ok, looks like the old ones are for influence

it was intended for a single user :'(

btw, how much impact does /v2/build have on the backend resources? relatively to other endpoints? i'm checking it every minute :p
probably not as much as the others, hopefully

I was doing an item query yesterday afternoon UK time, I hope it wasn't that.
@Archomeda practically none, I wouldn't worry about it

Should have only been 6 requests a minute though.. it took a few hours.

Feb 04 2016 19:56
why are you checking it every minute again?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 19:56
i'm pretty sure my cloud server can't even manage to get 100 requests/minute
oh, just to check if i have to fully update the item database for changes
otherwise it just gets a diff every day at 10:00 GMT and gets the new items
but if you're looking into rate limiting, are you separating the anonymous requests from requests with an api key?
windwarrior
@windwarrior

twitter has annoying ratelimits, like 150 reqs/hour

I think they are only limit write requests
and the limit depends on the karma you have on your account
but it has been a while since I looked at the reddit API
might have changed
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Feb 04 2016 20:01
wow... interesting to let it depend on karma

comment karma count for that or just link?

Clients connecting via OAuth2 may make up to 60 requests per minute.

I'm going to remove the influence and inf_combined events from the log endpoint, they are silly.

while we are talking about reddit: would you be interested in a bot that links to the wiki / shows some basic info when someones comment contains a chatcode?
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 20:10
blob
@darthmaim that would be awesome
but, most chatcodes are in the datamining post, so there's no wiki page yet...
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 20:11
but it might be in the API already
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 20:12
doesn't it only appear in the API when the first time the item is seen? or is that for recipes?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 20:12
yep, items need to be discovered too
but some items get discovered instantly after a patch, before there is a data mining post
I am not using /r/guildwars2 enough to know how many chatlinks the bot could resolve, but the few times I go there I want a link and no one is posting them
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Feb 04 2016 20:15
like I said, the only chat links I see, are the data-mining post
so you could test it out on that
I heard the next patch was on the table
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Feb 04 2016 20:16
I can just load the last few submissions and test how many chatlinks I can resolve, before I do all the automatic crawling/commenting stuff
first I need some free time :D

@lye - regarding the influence events, we still see them from time to time when guild members have the "4000 influence" items and use them, and isn't there some kind of item they can buy from a guild trader to get a few hundred influence too?
for example, {"id":103890,"time":"2016-01-31T23:15:03.501Z","type":"influence","activity":"gifted","total_participants":1,"participants":....
Yeah, that's what I was thinking about. The changelist I prepared only removes inf_combined since those aren't even parsed
My plan is to leave influence events in for now, then double-check whether there's anything useful in inf_combined these days (you used to be able to infer from it how many dungeons/fractals/etc your guild was running)
