you mentioned the websocket a lot of times; and every time i thought it would be similar to a socket like teamspeak or something
even after reading all the browser stuff and everything it still didn't click and was asking myself "why would you even need SSL?"
almost at the end, it finally did; and i was, oooohhhhhhhhhhhh... that's WAY more awesome than i first imagined

@lye, I took the opportunity to check with Content-Security-Policy: connect-src ws://localhost, but my Chrome still blocks it when the page itself was loaded over HTTPS
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Apr 19 2016 03:14 UTC
Hmm... am I reading this correctly that about 1% of the Chrome users use the very same thing that you want to accomplish? https://www.chromestatus.com/metrics/feature/timeline/popularity/530
I'm not really that great with understanding all that stuff, but as far as I understand they want to restrict the pages loaded from the internet communicating to local/intranet servers even further than they are right now

TL;DR: websockets unpossible, stick with Mumble
(i read most of it. really)
Aralicia

I tend to really find those kind of answer unacceptable. Especially if the "solution" is to use the half-assed solution of Mumble.

You set up a guildwars2.com dyndns and letsencrypt the certificate through that. private key locally with trusted cert? hurr durr
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 12:45 UTC
German eID requires you to get the user to open http://127.0.0.1:24727. You can't nicely include that without them seeing a blank page, or, if they forgot to run the client or installed it wrong an error you can't catch
(not)
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 12:52 UTC
Hmm no that won't do, the domain would have to resolve to the user and be accessible there first for that to work...
lyesgw2api.com assigns the client a subdomain, letsencrypts the key, sets the subdomain to resolve 127.0.0.1 and gives the key/cert to the client on an on demand basis
what could possibly go wrong
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Apr 19 2016 12:57 UTC
Question, it's the client that pushes the data for mumble? why can't you just push your own data the way you want, in the same way the mumble data works?
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 12:58 UTC
I have another super-dumb idea : have a non-TLS websocket; connect a non-TLS iframe on it; have the iframe interact with his TLS parent through a Flash-powered LocalConnection bridge. Afaik, LocalConnection ignores all http/https or cross-connection issues.
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 12:58 UTC
kill flash with 🔥
@Coffee4cr you can't read memory mapped files from a website
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 12:59 UTC
@Coffee4cr > issue with not using WebSocket is that no webapp can connect to it. Only locally installed apps would be able to.
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Apr 19 2016 12:59 UTC
ah ok
but it would work for local stuff
Aralicia
@Aralicia

@darthmaim hey, Flash is bad, but at least, it would work :p
darthmaim
@darthmaim

well, if you are using a plugin to read the data, you could write one just for reading the gw2 data
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:02 UTC
webrtc data channel between client and browser?
you "only" need to handle signaling
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:06 UTC
May work if Chrome still has his localhost exception to WebRTC. I've not idea how hard it would be to implement.
That said, WebRTC isn't supported by IE/Edge.
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:10 UTC
actual signaling server, no localhost
Implement some kind of well supported message queue, open a port and let someone else figure it all out
Coffee4cr @Coffee4cr washes hands
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Apr 19 2016 13:15 UTC
do a contest to figure a way to make it work!
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:17 UTC
hmm. My personal issue with that is that we use a signaling server for data that could/should only transit on localhost. That seems strange.
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:17 UTC
well for signaling to work on localhost you would need a secure websocket there ;)
just use superfish/lenovo certificates :P
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 13:18 UTC
:D
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:19 UTC
easy, arenanet just buys relevant 0days to keep it working
reimplement gw2 in webgl
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:24 UTC
That said, using webrtc could allow for some interesting setups. For example, an companion app on smartphone that monitor the player's data live. Or easy shared data accross players of the same group/guild. As long as it's not data that could be abused to gain an advantage, it could be pretty cool.
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Apr 19 2016 13:24 UTC
hence why we need to make it work
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:25 UTC
the gw2 client creates a virtual microphone device that transmits the data as audio signals. the web app then requests access to that virtual microphone and.. uhm... uses magic to decode the data?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 13:26 UTC
Thats actually one of the only solutions that could work, the web audio api got really good over the last few years
:D
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Apr 19 2016 13:26 UTC
it could send morse code or binary
lol
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:26 UTC
getUserMedia seems to allow raw access, so..
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:27 UTC
Raw access ? we can have anything we want. Binary, String, JSON data, frames... as long as a common structure is defined, we're good.
If it can work, it may be easier on our (the 3rd party) side to setup, rather than websockets.
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:30 UTC

Edgar Doiron

real time data... with a slight delay
:P
:bird:
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:34 UTC
tbh, even data with a 10s delay is enough for many new kind of apps.
and webrtc's usualy delay is far less than that.

Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:39 UTC
here's another one: let the user enter a webrtc server the game tries to connect to
nothing bad would ever come from this
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:40 UTC
[uninformed speculation] couldn't a global server using api keys as auth be better ?
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:41 UTC
let apps directly connect to the relevant game server!
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:42 UTC
Oh f*ck no.
We get enough connection issues on those already. I don't think they'd like any more.
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:44 UTC
you notice a trend in my suggestions I hope :P
websocket, not webrtc
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:49 UTC
that cyber thing.
I guess I like the getUserMedia virtual microphone device best because it's so stupid that it could actually come around and work
Aralicia
@Aralicia
Apr 19 2016 13:56 UTC
Well, you know that WebRTC has raw dataChannels, right ? You wouldn't really need a virtual microphone for that.
(That said, I have in the past inserted data custom trames within a RTMP Stream so that a ppt presentation was shown in sync with the video)
smiley
@codemasher
Apr 19 2016 13:57 UTC

:point_up: 19. April 2016 15:37

did that already, may add zeeZ's morse code solution as it's the currently most obvious one :P

Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:58 UTC
but you need signaling in order to set up webrtc datachannels
smiley
@codemasher
Apr 19 2016 13:58 UTC
heh, fair
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 13:59 UTC
which a webapp couldn't do locally again
the initial problem was that a secure webapp can't connect to the game's websocket because it's not secure
IIRC :D
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 14:00 UTC
yep
Nabrok
@Nabrok
Apr 19 2016 14:00 UTC
Could it use a self-signed cert?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 14:00 UTC
nope
the browser needs a valid one
but you can get a valid one for localgw2api.com and add A entry to 127.0.0.1
problem with that is, you need to distribute the private key with the gw2 client
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Apr 19 2016 14:01 UTC
well in theory it is possible to distribute a keypair with the client (see a comment by @lye), but well, whats the point in SSL if your keys are publicly known (or well, can be extracted from the client anyway)
Christian
@zeeZ
Apr 19 2016 14:03 UTC
hence my idea was lvesgw2api.com abuses letsencrypt to get a key/cert for a subdomain, then after A that subdomain to localhost and hand the key/cert to the client
which... is not all that much better
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Apr 19 2016 14:04 UTC
you don't even need to "abuse" letsencrypt

smiley
@codemasher
Apr 19 2016 16:41 UTC
would be cool!
also I looked in whether we could distribute a private key/cert with the client
we can't -- it breaks the CA requirements (there's a requirement that they revoke any certs whose keys are publicly known)
the only way we can use websockets is if (A) we require consumer pages to not use HTTPS or (B) we use CF-style keyless TLS (e.g., we stand up an TLS challenge oracle that holds the key rather than distributing it).

Heart of Thorns Dailies: Specific dailies for Heart of Thorns will only appear in a player’s rotation if they own the expansion

I wish I could yell "OK GOOGLE, GW2 2FA CODE" and my phone somewhere in the room would tell me the code. My lazyness is not fully supported yet

My most common use case is someone is spamming me with messages while I'm stuck in traffic, so I get to yell "OK GOOGLE SEND A MESSAGE TO xyz" followed by profanity and my ETA without ever looking away from traffic
The suspense is amazing when I arrive and get to check what was actually sent

I played Tom Clancy's End War for a while, which had the gimick that you gave your units voice commands
