is it just me or did google completely remove the "view page source" menu entry (except from the context when not on images) in chrome?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 12:16 UTC
i think they did, i noticed it last time as well when i wanted to view the source but the site blocked right clicking... (why does that even still exist in this era??)

it's so annoying...

wow, try reading this site with scriptblocker enabled. gross. http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/9/11589628/fort-mcmurray-wildfire-security-cam
web "designers" who don't make sure that your site is readble in that case: please get fired. with a cannon into the sun.
(this is an instant tab-close and it happens a lot.)

i generally dislike using javascript to layout a website
feels so hacky to me
i also dislike those ad block blockers :\
i decide what i want to have in my browser, not them
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:18 UTC
it's not even javascript to layout - it's just CSS but with embedded SVG in the HTML it seems, and that goes berserk without the style
(my scriptblocker also blocks the stylesheets)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 09 2016 13:21 UTC
well I am not using an adblocker because I like paying for services I use. But, it feels like the internet is trying to force me to use adblockers by rudely invading my privacy, installing malicious software, and flashing ads that take over websites.
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:28 UTC
there is really no reason not to use an ad-blocker nowadays. there are even people (famous interwebs people) who shared your opinion but have changed their mind because ads have become a real problem.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 13:44 UTC
i don't mind non-intrusive ads, but like 80% of the websites use ads that you just mentioned; and besides, i still think that i should have control over what i see in my browser
it's not tv where they have control over the broadcast since it's live
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:46 UTC
basically this. but they want to make us think it's not that way, haha. welcome to 1984.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 13:46 UTC
actually, the worst thing i've ever seen is evolve showing popups with video ads when you exit a game every single time
or was rather, they removed it since people really disliked it
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:47 UTC

no really, their ad campaign was annoing on steam
it kept showing up everywhere for weeks
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 13:49 UTC
but yeah, i had it installed a long time ago (like 1.5 years ago), and at some point i decided to use it again
then that video ad scared the life out of me because of the volume when i was continuously starting and closing a game to test something
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:49 UTC

Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 13:52 UTC
especially apps that have an ad bar on the bottom of my screen...
i should install that at some point too
but you know, companies that really want you to use their software on phones and therefore building in triggers that fuses some chip or something that shows that you've installed a custom fw at some point
coughsamsungcough
but at some point my warranty will run out, so i can install it quite easily afterwards
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:58 UTC
the warranty thing isn't one that keeps me from hacking my phone b/c i won't return it anyway.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 13:59 UTC
meh, i think they can actually reject your phone if you need to have it repaired or something
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 13:59 UTC
i mean, it's not that i have super sensitive private data on it, but still, the internal storage can be restored even when you formatted it. forensics ftl.
the last time i've returned a phone was back in the 90's
it was my siemens S10, and Siemens happily exchanged it like 5 times over 2 years or so
(the only thing was dust on the speaker membrane which caused vibrations and therefore mad the speaker moot)
Archomeda

My response to your web "designers" comment: If I'm working on a site, it is my resources that determine whether I cater
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 15:46 UTC
there are indeed a lot cases *where it doesn't matter, but as soon as you provide "content" that you want to be read and you do stuff like this, you're doing it wrong.
Aralicia
@Aralicia
May 09 2016 15:55 UTC
Tbh, if you willingly disable script & stylesheets, use our RSS feed or gtfo. We are using enough ressources ensuring that our stuff has graceful degradation on old browser version, without having to worry about the 2 visitors that decide to block stylesheets.

Aralicia
@Aralicia
May 09 2016 16:03 UTC
I'm serious. If it's readable on IE8+, modern desktop browsers and mobile devices, that's enough and I don't care for the oddballs out there. Unless the client specifically ask for Lynx support, don't expect that from me. Blocking scripts is imo acceptable, and sites I work on can handle that (except for script-based functionnalities). But blocking stylesheets ? you can go [censored].
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:09 UTC
you can make any site readable in any browser completely without css. even without hassle.

Hey, I remember reading about there being some sqlite file with all the items on it for download so I wouldn't have to make requests to the gw2 api all the time. Does that exist or am I imagining things?
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:21 UTC
@darthmaim provided a download for the item database that runs https://gw2treasures.com
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC
do I?
I can make one if anyone wants it
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC
however, i don't know wether it's up-to-date nor where the link was :D
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC

smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC

charlieman
@charlieman
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC
ah, so no official database
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:22 UTC
no
you could also create your own https://github.com/codemasher/gw2-database
charlieman
@charlieman
May 09 2016 16:23 UTC
are there limits to requests done to the actual api?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:23 UTC
no
Pat Cavit
@tivac
May 09 2016 16:23 UTC
Well, yes & no
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:23 UTC
Well yeah, try to keep it low, but there is currently no hard limit afaik
Pat Cavit
@tivac
May 09 2016 16:24 UTC
nothing official, but if you're abusive we won't be very happy about it and will have to institute rate-limiting by IP presumably
don't make us do that
smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:24 UTC
otherwise @lye will post funny graphs again
you don't want thaat :smile:
charlieman
@charlieman
May 09 2016 16:24 UTC
well I'm not gonna abuse it, I just want to get the names for the items in my guild inventory, a single request with all the ids can do that, right?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 16:24 UTC
basically, play nice and we have a fair use policy :D
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC
yes, one request should be enough
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC
actually @codemasher graphs are awesome to look at
Pat Cavit
@tivac
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC

smiley
@codemasher
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC
indeed they are
Pat Cavit
@tivac
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC
no one should need > 200 items XD
charlieman
@charlieman
May 09 2016 16:25 UTC
I'll look at that as well, thanks for the help
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 16:26 UTC
the guild bank can contain 250 items max right? so that's two requests at most then
well, for the items lookup
you also have to request the bank itself, which makes it 3 in total
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 09 2016 16:27 UTC
which is still waaaaay lower than any limit that might be added in the future :P
charlieman
@charlieman
May 09 2016 16:27 UTC
I only need it for the 3rd section so 100 items
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 09 2016 16:27 UTC
ohh, even better
but yeah, bulk expansion is what you want :D
100 single requests vs 1 request for 100 items... hmm
glad you added that for /v2 :D
Christian
@zeeZ
May 09 2016 17:01 UTC
single request all the things
one socket each
no caches, let the api handle that :P
Christian
@zeeZ
May 09 2016 17:30 UTC
so using teleport to friend while at the same time getting kicked from the party still consumes it without doing anything -.-
