May 13 2016 01:27
gw2 api too complex
how to use
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:27
well maybe people can help here
what is your problem
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:28
I must be able to get item icon images from item IDs
and I am unable to do this
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:28
right
there is an item endpoint api.guildwars2.com/v2/items/
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:28
sweet
I got that part
let's say I wanted the icon for Nevermore
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:29
you can query it with an id like so: api.guildwars2.com/v2/items?ids=1
so, whats the ID for nevermore?
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:30
hold on let me get it
it's probably 71383
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:31
71383
yeah
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:31
called it
I am a master programmer now
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:31
now you have a JSON-formatted object
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:31
interesting
I have heard of this before
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:32
what language are you usign?
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:32
C#
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:32
there is probably a library for it
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:32
I am unsure how to parse such a dictionary
GW2.Net is a failing build
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:32
no, a json parse library
for example
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:33
ah yes
I have that installed
shall I figure out what to do next
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:33
just fiddle with it
s/figgle/fiddle
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:33
wat
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:33
sooo close :'(
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:34
i am even unsure what to do with https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/items/71383 now that i have it
but i shall figure it out
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:34
well, your C# has to make webrequests for that
and then somehow parse the JSON-formatted answer it gets
the server is REST, that is a term you can google :>
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:35
yes i've heard of this REST API thing
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:35
it basically means that you can call specific url's for specific data, like the items endpoint I told you about
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:35
yes
i wonder if i can call the contents of https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/items/71383 as a string
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:37
well I have no clue how to C#, but usually there is some magic library that can do webrequests, feed that to your json parser, and then get the key you want
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:37
i managed to call the contents of https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/items/71383 as a string
i'm getting somewhere
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:38
good luck
programming is a puzzle
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:38
i wish i knew jquery or rails
let alone php
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:38
javascript is easy
(jQuery is not a language per-se, it is a framework on top of Javascript specifically for browsers)
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:39
sorry my bad
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:39
no no, thats how you learn
https://www.codecademy.com/ might interest you
we all started at rock bottom
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:43
i find reverse engineering code helps
i've done a lot of JS stuff on codecademy in the past but maybe that's just a bit simplistic
need to experiment more myself
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:43
well you can checkout some javascript things I wrote
the code is a bit hacky at times but hey
make sure to check out other code, and use libraries when you need something. Don't make the mistake of trying to write everything yourself at least
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:46
sounds smart
thanks
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:46
no worries, helping is something I love to do :>
can someone make an api to clean my inventories
please :O
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:47
not sure about an API but i saw a thing posted back here awhile ago
slightly outdated but it helped to clean inventories
this
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:48
yeah saw that
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:48
i could almost swear you were part of the disc-
yeah
sue them for not making it open source
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:49
Well their interlectual property, so have no case ;)
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 01:53
the code is spaghetti but I successfully gathered an icon of nevermore
i'm so glad I'm better at c# than windwarrior
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 01:54
well, I can maybe C#
as I know enough other languages ;>
Java/JavaScript/Haskell/Rust/..
Python
(how can I forget python, I love that language for quick'n dirty scripting)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:00
if you know java, you can quite easily adept to c#
and then you realize that c# is way better than java
(my opinion ofc)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:01
well my linux systems tend to disagree... the story on non-windows is not ideal
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:02
i meant the language in general, not necessarily performance
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:03
well a JITted language has as prime benefit that it is cross-platform
and that costs you some perfomance
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:03
true
not sure how far they've come so far, but it seemed pretty awesome when they mentioned it a year ago
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:05
well - theoretically - JITted languages might be faster then native code because you compile for a subset of the machines with C/C++. Lets say that you have a new CPU with fancy new instructions, the JVM might pick up on those and use them in the final compile
practically... not so much
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:06
i still like how i can use c# in powershell ^^
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:06
I still like my zsh
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:06
never had experience with that XD
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:07
zsh is bash with extras
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:07
i know bash, to a certain degree
but only very limited stuff
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:09
I realised today that I am using linux for 5 years now as main operating system
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:10
i've been using linux as a main server operating system for a while now, does that count? :P
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:11
Ubuntu 11.04 -> Debian -> Ubuntu 12.04 -> Ubuntu 12.10 -> broke it horribly -> Archlinux
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:11
lol
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:12
turns out, updating to alpha ubuntu is not the best plan ever
and, turns out, arch was the operating system for me all along
arch is a pretty stable operating system. Just read the instructions and it keeps working
like... they decided to move /bin to /usr/bin one day
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:16
i'm not one that reads instructions XD
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:16
that broke my computer quite hard
because I forgot to read the instructions
windwarrior
@windwarrior

relatively painless
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 02:24
yeah it's not painful without them
just a precaution
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 13 2016 02:24

they pull them in two sets here, first one side, then the other
wonders how long a queue pop on EU/4:25 AM takes
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:26

because slick-shoes q.q
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 02:28

smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 15:29
what's uglier, gitter's new menu or instagram's new icon?
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 15:29
instagram's new icon
gitter's new menu is okay just needs to be comapct
instagram icon is better than the old one :^)
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 15:30

which api endpoint can i use to find the number of item someone has in their vault based on an api key
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 15:36
/v2/account/bank?
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 15:36
interesting
I will try this out
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 15:37
there's also /v2/account/materials and /v2/account/inventory based on what you need
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 15:37
yes
i'm assuming what i'll end up doing is adding those to make a total
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 15:38
also /v2/characters/:id/inventory, /v2/characters/:id/equipment
Erik Humphrey
@ErikHumphrey
May 13 2016 15:39
man i'm not using JS for this though
I don't know how to authenticate an api key
Archomeda
@Archomeda
May 13 2016 15:39
in case you want to see all the endpoints: https://api.guildwars2.com/v2 lists everything there is :)

@lye this is the bar for skill editors http://redeemer.biz/guild-wars/projekte/pawned2/
heh, I want a single-page application
moreover: I want to integrate it into a larger application that demos a vertical slice of API functionality
also for warriors you can only select shouts
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 22:57
ah
but uhh for skills the unit tests aren't very good since there's a lot of domain-specific knowledge (e.g., knowing which skills should have trait overrides)
I end up going through the JSON manually to verify that I haven't broken anything -- would be way easier if I could just run a single-page app that displays 'em reasonably using my local data
ditto for map data, which is incredibly hard to automatically verify
codemasher @codemasher agrees
this is what I'm using for map data and it seems to work okay: https://github.com/arenanet/api-cdi/blob/master/leaflet-example.html
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 22:59
speaking of maps: would it be possible to add some kind of simple geocoding?
I'm really on the fence about it
it's currently not that hard to map the API-provided coordinates into geojson, for example
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:00
like, looking up the id for an event or place and get the coordinates for it
For events, not really.
Events are heavily scripted and their location can vary based on a large number of factors
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:01
but, uhh the coordinates are saved with the event data under /v1...?

@darthmaim
May 13 2016 23:05

@darthmaim I leave code littered w/ //TODO

darthmaim
@darthmaim

I have a sublime/vscode plugin that does the same thing
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 13 2016 23:07
but i was planning on merging that instantly, found a few bugs, fixed those in master, had other ideas, ..., and never got to merge it
maybe there is nothing left todo
maybe there is
well it's friday

@darthmaim
May 13 2016 23:07

uhh, what's this with the backticks here fetch(${apiBase}/continents?page=0`)`? Does that run through the parser, similar double qouted strings in php?
ahrg, how do i escape these?
this i mean
no that's legit javascript
AFAIK you have to escape them with backslashes, e.g., fetch(`${apiBase}...`)
or not
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:33
i tried :)
triple backticks works
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:34
thiught so, but didn't want to bloat a code block for that
re the backticks in js, i thought that was more fancy
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:36
well, ok, it kinda is:
console.log(`Fifteen is ${a + b} and\nnot ${2 * a + b}.`);

so many weird bugs I don't have locally though...
ok, wrong img src on not retina screens, who is even writing/testing my code...
I was so confused, looked at the live page on my regular desktop pc and all the fact icons were not showing correctly, but on my macbook everything worked...

Only 21 new events in sentry, could be worse...
hrm, sentry looks kinda cool
wonder if there's an open source clone already
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 13 2016 23:53
sentry is opensource if i'm not mistaken
they just charge for the hosted version
damn it feels good to be a sysadmin
darthmaim
@darthmaim
May 13 2016 23:54
they have a free plan, they just don't advertise it
i'm not really keen on hosted services
I've got plenty of hardware lying around in my house to run things on

it stays at 10-15% on my 4GHz i7
no idea tbh; I blame leaflet though

@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:56
hmm, thats weird
oh I'm just stupid
it's because it's looping the error handler for missing tiles
smiley
@codemasher
May 13 2016 23:59
hah
and the error handler I'm using says "use the invisible tile that I didn't upload to github"
hooray profiling tools
