well, this exists so that you dont have to type in your password when pressing the normal shutdown button in your UI
and systemd just sort of extended that to commandline on your local system
but I dont want to know how the main function of the systemctl binary looks
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Nov 29 2016 00:05
systemctl (the binary) is an 8466 line long c file, with barely any documentation and a lot of static functions
maybe its me, but when I see a program that alters global state I get very anxious. Then again, I dont C/C++

doubt it XD
so you got one of those newfangled machines and it is impossible to install a OS quick and painless
in 2016
it's a shame

I have Steam on my arch laptop
its sad that it requires multilib tho
now I have libraries both in the 64 bits and 32 bits flavors installed :(
wait they don't provide 64-bit builds of steam? O_o
actually I wonder if that's just for game support

no
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 00:41
on a side note: in order to install a windows < 10 on that machine, i'd need to slipstream a media with all drivers. installation from the original media doesn't work bc i can't supply the AHCI driver via USB...

just grab an old USB2 PCI card :>

What do you smart people think of password managers (specifically lastpass)? I am thinking about using it, but not-opensource leaves a bad taste... Any experiences / recommendations?
Archomeda

i use keepass, works fine for me
afaik also opensource

trust noone (especially lastpass & other online services), except a pgp encrypted file on your local disk/usb stick.

wonder how many people who store their passwords in their browser also use the "convenient" online services to have them on all devices (chrome/ff)
i mean, do you REALLY think your passwords are safe when stored online? keep in mind that any of these services needs to use a reversable encryption. so there's that.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 11:29
i still don't get it why people use their browser to store passwords and think it's safe?
when you go to the settings, you can literally view the passwords right there
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Nov 29 2016 11:30
you can do that with every password manager
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 11:30
true, but in the case of keepass you need either a master password, a keyfile or an associated windows user account (or a combination of those)
whereas with firefox you don't need a master password
i use a master password for keepass that's unique and i've not used for anything else
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 11:32
there's nothing wrong with storing passwords in your browser locally.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 11:32
and of course, you must not leave it open when you're away :P
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 11:32
you still need the password of the user account to view them anyway
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 11:33
do you? pretty sure windows itself is pretty unsafe when it comes to user data
unless you encrypt it
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 11:33
yes, you need a pw
and yes windows may be unsafe as long as the disk is not encrypted
but so is any other OS too :P
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 11:34
hm true
anyway, i'll never use the browser to store crucial passwords
if it's throwaway accounts i don't care
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 11:39

:point_up: 29. November 2016 12:30

it is, in fact, necessary for the password manager to operate, right? :D

why does the tweet embed not include the tweet's contents anymore
gitter's embeds are the devil's handiwork
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 16:54
install stylebot and
.chat-item__text .embed {
    height: inherit;
    max-height: 640px;
    overflow: inherit;
    position: initial;
}

a[href*="https://open.spotify.com/track"] + .embed {
    height: 80px;
}

a[href*="https://open.spotify.com/track"] + .embed > div {
    padding-bottom: 80px;
}

iframe.twitter-timeline {
    height: 500px;
    width: 800px;
}

pre code {
    display: inline-block;
}

twitterwidget {
    margin: 10px 0;
    position: initial;
}
(WIP, broke in the meantime, but helps)
thanks

@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 16:56

hopefully stylebot doesn't hardlock chromium the same way literally every json prettifier does
i'm very tempted to change the API to emit pretty-printed JSON >__>
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 16:57
haha
might be helpful as the json-viewers are to be considered harmful
it would be faster than writing my own
prettifying json is linear time and constant space -_-
I just know that all of the existing prettifiers are doing JSON.parse which is slow as beans with a 200KB document
(and that's before they walk the tree to add expand/collapse buttons and styling and stuff)
JSON_PRETTY_PRINT
the API frontend is in Javascript, so JSON.stringify(obj, " ", "") would work fine
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 17:00
just do it or does anyone care about that extra overhead?
it'd be what? 3-5% reply overhead?
and that's before gzip
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 17:01
so basically... nothing
I could hide it behind a parameter but honestly I don't think anyone would notice
smiley

my gem balance was suddenly correct that day
did we do a patch that day or something
the bug was that the gem balance was emitted by the backend twice -- ["correct", "old"] and the old value overwrote the correct one
                        if (currency == 4 && m_gems) {
                            // If we've already emitted gem values (from
                            // WalletSrv), skip the amount in the blob.
                            continue;
                        }
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 17:21
#274
the backend kind of fixed the issue
it would still have returned the wrong value if you spent all your gems
(but that's fixed now)

i like the idea of this more ram thing
imagine a server that has a couple 1080 installed for high load applications that don't use video output - so the ram of the GFX would be unused
4x 1080 = up to 32-48GB of extra memory (fast!)

Had to come over here and cheer about the bank tabs \o/ Thanks =)
@queicherius are you already hitting /v2/guild for all accesses of /v2/account? I'm trying to weigh the performance implications of doing this the messy way
/v2/guild is intentionally uncached (the backend piece for guilds handles authentication) but I'm wondering if that'll be an issue
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 18:43
is there a way through the api to know if someone is currently online in a guild?
no, only because I don't really want to expose online status
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 18:43
k
even if it's behind /guild?
yeah
I might go back on that
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 18:44
right now, treasury and all that is available only to the leader
the other option is to add a new key permission that lets you see the online status and current location (with I think 1-minute resolution?) of the account
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 18:44
could you maybe do the same thing?

And 8 months after launch
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Nov 29 2016 19:04
That came out a bit after the actual API launch, but close enough
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:05
Are you saying that the api was live earlier than that post? :O
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 19:06
the TP API was available from the start i guess
so perhaps early versions of the public API too, eh?
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Nov 29 2016 19:06
The TP was not available at launch :')
smiley
@codemasher
Nov 29 2016 19:07
oh right, now that you say it :D
(also, i said TP API, not just TP :P)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:08
The tp was at v0 back then :P
And not public
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Nov 29 2016 19:08
The new one is so much better
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:09

Nov 29 2016 19:09

Nov 29 2016 19:26
The unofficial one was actually quite fast if you requested everything in one request cough not that anyone did that cough
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:31
What are bulk requests?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:43
Just asking again, but are people here interested in playing screeps on a private server? I want to try it out but I don't want to play alone :(
also, i probably don't have hosting :p
I'll pass, not enough time in the day
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:45
what's screeps?

if you have time to play programming games, you're doing it wrong :P
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:45
we should just play boardgames on Tabletop Simulator
lye @lye flips the table

windwarrior
@windwarrior

David Reeß
@queicherius
Nov 29 2016 19:51
@Coffee4cr Are you saying Kingdom Death Monsters is in Tabletop Simulator?
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:51
yes
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Nov 29 2016 19:51
That's why a private server is interesting, but then you need people as well
David Reeß
@queicherius
Nov 29 2016 19:51
I've been looking for a good multiplayer dnd-similar expierence
Well, found my christmas present. Thanks :D
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:52
@queicherius oh man, it's like the best thing i've ever played!
the problem is finding the rules, but if you ever wanna start playing I can share my drive folder with the ones i found
deep within a 4chan thread
LOL
Heft this 17 lb cooperative tabletop adventure into the darkest cockles of your heart.
(1) holy crap that's a box, and (2) ...cockles?
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:54
it's back on kickstarter
for the reprint and 1.5 edition
the original is also sold out
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:54
yeah, and was about $1k on ebay
hahah
in the current KS, you can get expansion of the first version, plus everything coming out...for only$1 666
lol
man I might actually jump on board this
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:55
but really, it's better to play on TTS imo, way too much to setup on a table if you do it irl
:P
wait, estimated delivery is 2020
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:56
2017 for core 1.5
yeah but the miniatures
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:56
2020 is everything
gradual shipping
yeah, most who buy the real game, is for the miniatures, to paint and shit
@queicherius
that's the table I use
David Reeß
@queicherius
Nov 29 2016 19:57
Damn, nice
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:57
using these character sheets though
queicherius @queicherius saves all the bookmarks
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 19:58
and if you friend the creator of that table, you can access is WIP table
with tons of automated stuff
the rules
it's only 226 pages
but if you follow the prologue rules as your first game, you really don't need to read the whole thing
David Reeß
@queicherius
Nov 29 2016 20:00
Neat, thanks. Downloading it
I tried loads of the online websites for table tops, but they were all so damn complicated
I like the "hey we just give you a physic engine" approach
I wish it had a lot more flexibility tbh
you have to do some crazy stuff to get any sort of game mechanic automation
zones, zones everywhere

And there have been some fixes deployed as well!
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 20:13
@lye yeah that's if you want automations
but for the most cases, there's plenty of tool already taht works fairly well
fair
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 20:14
and they're updating it and adding stuff often enough
so how many of you are boardgame fans?
:hand: but who has the time
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Nov 29 2016 20:19
yeah, my boardgame time went down. 2 kids will do that, and also my friends having kids, makes it hard to coordinate
but I've been playing on TTS 1-3 times a week now

ugh the mastery point icons aren't in /v2/files, that's super annoying
¯_(ツ)_/¯

after I figure out WTF is up with the mastery point coordinates I'll see about adding those mastery point icons into /v2/files
