:wave: to that potentially useful service
apigee bought by google 11/10/16
gw2 APIs should've just followed http://jsonapi.org/ to force our hand, but I don't think it existed at the time the v2 stuff started
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:20
maybe release candidates...

but

2015-05-29: 1.0 final released.

Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:21
dates and times are but ephemeral nonsense to me
by which I mean I don't remember when /v2 shipped XD
Release date 2014-07-16
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:22
god bless the wiki

Best endpoint
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:22
I could look at the commit history, but why bother
still my favorite, but I'm very biased
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:23
:D
pretty sure the second endpoint got activated many months after quaggans
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:23
Version 2 of the Guild Wars 2 API was first mentioned on July 16th 2014, when the root and quaggans endpoint was made available. On September 8th 2014, the commerce endpoints were enabled, and on February 24th, 2015 the account endpoints were enabled.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:23
but /v2 was already in development ofc :P
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:23
only 2!
/v2 existed as something for our KZ publisher well before it ever was a thing in na/eu
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:24
oh hmm, that's less than i remember
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:24
done by a C++ programmer in JS XD
I rewrote a bunch of it before shipping quaggans as a test
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:24
:O
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:24
then Lawton took over and the rest is history
oh I guess maybe I wrote the first iteration of the commerce endpoints too
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:25
aka he did a bunch of stuff and your contribution is totally rewritten as well? :smile:
or is your code still somewhere in the api? :D
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:26
I'm pretty sure if I blamed the files there's still bits and pieces
the JS core of all our web-apps is mostly written/maintained by me, so there's that too
lawton owns the C++ underneath the JS though
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:27
the worst people are mathematicians who somehow learned C and start to write Python
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:27
ah cool
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:28
had to argue with him that global booleans encoded as 0/1 were not sensible python :(
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:28
tbf mathematicians think they can write code when they actually can't
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:28
staring harder and harder at keeky's API explorer
stupidly contemplating writing something like it
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:28
what is the anet JS stack like
very traditional, or just very new and fancy
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:29
custom C++ core => v8 => custom JS code => JS web application code
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:29
yeah, i want something like an api explorer or sandbox for the gw2 api as well, especially since the api gets more and more endpoints nowadays
but i'm thinking about how to do it
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:29
It looks like node but isn't node, basically
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:29
so no 'big' frameworks
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:29
for reasons
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:29
like react/angular/ember/...
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:29
mostly mithril.js.org on the frontend
some legacy YUI stuff still kicking around
https://github.com/tivac/modular-css + some other postcss plugins for CSS
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:30
fancy
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:30
oh, i've seen YUI in some files in the .dat file before (don't judge me for peeking :D)
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:30
no judging
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:31
it was interesting to see js embedded
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:31
IMO curiousity is allowed & encouraged
but I'm also the lead who lets lawton work on the APIs almost full-time and keeps folks away from him
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:31
its very interesting to see how companies keep up with the everchaning JS world
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:31
(i like peeking around on how things work :P)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:32
like, Javascript is pretty flavour of the month
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:32
heck, i've even contributed on modifying a gameboy advance rom for translations a long time ago, and also a small editor for save files
just because i wanted to know how things were stored
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:33
I contributed dutch translations to gnu-cash!
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:34
but later i lost interest
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:35
flavour of the month
lol we've been running SSJS for 5+ years
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:35
flavor of the decade* then
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:35
no no, I am not saying that, I was more aiming at frameworks/libraries/etc
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:35
:P
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:35
like, in 2012 MooTools was still a thing
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:36
heh sure
we were a YUI shop for a long time (I worked at Y! before anet, so go figure)
and then when it was EOL'd we had a brief panic and spent some time doing deep-dives on the available solutions
I'm really strongly against angular/ember/react for various reasons
but mithril is real good
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:37
mithril seems to be more lightweight
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:37
much
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:38
and its also very immersive for GW2
so thats a pre
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:38
it's like 1-2k LOC, which is just about perfect for a framework
enough to get some shit done but not so big that you can't find your way out of trouble
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:39
yeah, I guess you have people for both sides of the equation. Some people like full "batteries included" frameworks, some like minimalistic frameworks
like, I am more of a backend guy, and I like frameworks that have a set way of solving problems
so I prefer django over things like web.py
but I got completely lost in ember
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:43
that's because ember is a gargantuan labyrinthine fever dream
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:43
sorry for being nosy, but how do you guys keep javascript organised, do you use some sort of module system?
because things like ember force you to program a certain way
but if you only use light frameworks, they usually dont care
our V8 server supports require and we have a standard directory layout
(it also supports node_modules)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:45
very fancy, thanks for all the answers
np I love bragging about our V8 bits since I'm the one maintaining it these days
I try to keep a release ahead of node.js to maintain the more-hipster-than-node attitude
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:47
haha you have enough bragging rights :>. I still think the GW2 api is a very well designed API
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:47
lol
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:47
I re-implemented the node.js require syntax
because I'm a sucker (and it was fun)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:48
sometimes you gotta be stubborn and do it yourself
to find out that others can do it way better
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:48
no import? :(
@tivac lol and the shims to make most node modules work lol
@Archomeda not yet.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:48
aw
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:48
v8 doesn't support ES modules
oh those shims are tiny
do we want ES modules? I bet it's fairly straightforward
probably just have to tell it about our loader
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:49
and I can't shim language functionality like that unless we want every app to be bundled via rollup
(which would be kinda wild but no let's not)
when do you leave for vacation btw?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:49
NEVER
:baby: :boy: :man: :older_man: :skull:
all right here in my chair
started thinking about JSON to represent API endpoints and promptly visited https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/API:2/items
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:51
just order food on xmas
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:51
welp I'm out
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:51
eat-at-work
tried to make type annotations for the item endpoint once
ala typescript
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:51
lmao
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:51
but that didnt happen :(
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:52
I'd be much more likely to create JSON to represent available params
and then just leaning on the wiki for documentation of possible outputs
because anything else seems crazy
I have an SQL schema for /v2/items somewhere but it was at 26 tables and counting
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:52
twentysix o.O
yeah then I discovered that jsonb is awesome
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:54
can you query in it?
otherwise its a bit pointless
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:54
pretty sure you can
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 00:54
you can
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:55
jsonb is more optimized iirc
@windwarrior yes and also you can use computed indexes
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:55
oh fancy
postgress is a pretty fancy DB anyway
I dont get the MySQL/MariaDB love
SELECT id FROM items WHERE data->'name' ILIKE '%zerk%' AND data->'rarity' = 'Junk'
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:57
are you calling my gear junk
q.q
I just made a full set of ascended nomads
I don't want to talk about it
Mostly because I don't think you can buy ascended nomads trinkets easily
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:58
new maps ^^
pve
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:58
they are pretty farmable
rip
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 00:58
PvP amulet/ring too
dont think tehre is a way in WvW tho, sorry :(
I'll just grab soldier's or something, no biggie
I might transmute my weapons to nomads and just use full soldier trinkets
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:59
wasn't jsonb better supported in 9.6 compared to 9.5 btw?
yeah but I just grabbed the first link on google
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 00:59
can't recall what improvements 9.6 has anymore though
IIRC there was a really important improvement; might have been partial computed indexes or something? I don't recall
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:00
you can maybe take cleric, that has power over vita tho
guard needs vit
esp with the condi-heavy meta
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:00
maybe accessing inner json properties or something
for sorting and stuff
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:00
magi then
oh but thats also annoying to get
nevermind :(
gonna have to be soldiers
or sentinel if the prices aren't still insane
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:04
7g for an inscription/insignia
oh jewelery
wait
oh right ascended jewelry I can't transmute or anything orz
so weapons -> nomad, jewels -> :sad:
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:05
yeah, pvp for the new trinkets maybe
those are choosywhateverstat
ain't nobody got time for that
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:05
oh man... just looking at jsonapi.org... inclusion of related resources, sparse fieldsets, sorting, filtering, omg
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:06
yeah jewelery is a bit of a mess if you dont PvE
ironic
only the rich players get to wear good jewelery :>
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:06
suppose we won't see that any time soon? (not that it's really needed)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:07
you can make a wrapper
maybe
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:07
hmm true
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:07
Not unless someone goes crazy
that'd be a lot of work for marginal gain at this point
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:07
does the API tell about cache times?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:07
steal @queicherius's gw2api.com domain back XD
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:08
so that you know when to reask GW2's api
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:08
wasn't that in one of the headers?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:08
pretty sure
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:08
yeah I was thinking something like that yeah
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:09
iirc either cache-control or expires are accurate for the cache lifetime of the response as far as the API server knows
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:09
Cache-Control:public,max-age=300
Date:Wed, 21 Dec 2016 01:09:05 GMT
Expires:Wed, 21 Dec 2016 01:14:06 GMT
should suffice i'm sure
that expires compared to the date is funny though
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:10
both Cache-Control and Expires are explicitly set to the the correct value, yes
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:10
like, isn't that 301 seconds?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:10
yeah but we're adding milliseconds
so it rounds up, apparently :(
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:10
pfff xD
i do love this though:
Server:Quaggans
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:11
yer welcome
Nothing I love more than a good dumb joke
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:12

add something along the lines of

X-Quaggans-Sacrificed-For-This-Request:3

:laughing:

windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:12
X-Moose: Magestic
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:12
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:12
is what reddit has on its API
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:12
that might translate back to the milliseconds spent on performing the request
oh wait, since when got the header Link added for pagination?
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:14
forever
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:14
or was it always there...
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:14
since /v2 launched, literally
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:14
-_-
then it wasn't well explained on the wiki i think
When accessing a page, additional HTTP response headers may be available:
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:15
yes, but it doesn't explicitly list Link as the header
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:15
Sure
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:16
well, i'm pretty sure it's somewhere in a specification :P
that i didn't know about a long time ago
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:17
yeah I forget the RFC off hand
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:17
we really should have a gw2 api explorer/sandbox
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:19
gonna leave you with a thing I just stubbed out
blob
(zero promises it'll ship)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:20
any chance of more metadata in /v2.json, like required key permissions, allows bulk expansion, allows all for bulk, accepted parameters...
:O
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:20
blob
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:21

windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:21
:D
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:21
(don't get too excited just yet :smile: )
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:21
Here be dragons
David Reeß
@queicherius
Dec 21 2016 01:21
Perfect. :shipit:
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:21
anyways high-level I'd like to make this a simple SPA, it won't be an all-in-one reference
will shell out to the wiki for response format stuff because fuck that
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:22
/v2/items
/v2/skills
/v2/traits
:D
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:22
hoping to use it to A) provide a useful tool B) brush up on dark corners of mithril@1.0 C) experiment with a service-worker
like I said, no way in hell I'm documenting that stuff
except as a markdown blob copied from the wiki
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:22
well I tend to use URL manipulation to explore the API a bit
thats not... very useful, so any small UI is very welcome
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:23
god I'm gonna have to futz w/ the wiki APIs to do this right
eugh
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:23
well, i will already be glad with just a sandbox
where the response is syntax highlighted, and when things like relationships to other endpoints have a link on the properties
e.g.
{
  id: 1,
  skill_id: 5 // <-- is linked to /v2/skills/5
}
ehm, that's not valid json, but w/e
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:25
valid enough for me
Pat Cavit
@tivac
Dec 21 2016 01:25
that'd be nice, we'll see
gotta run, I'll post updates if I make any progress
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:26
saves typing in the url manually :D
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:26
have a nice day!
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:26
nice, have a nice evening ;)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:33
I should not start to program at 2:33 AM
but but but
hmm :(
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:34
yes, you should probably sleep :P at least i really have to
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:35
blob
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:36
did i really inspire people to make this by just starting a conversation about it? xD
anyway, good luck, i'm gonna sleep XD
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:36
yeah I am debating whether to actually start
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:36
have to get up in less than 4 hours, not cool :(
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:36
cus then I am not stopping before 5 AM
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 01:37
:D
just play some nice music, and you'll be fiiiiine
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 01:38
you are a giver of bad advice
Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 03:32
@lye If you can stand the story. Do that long enough to unlock the WvW/PvP tracks for your Ls3 trinkets.
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 21 2016 05:35
@windwarrior still here? :)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 21 2016 12:22
@Archomeda nah I was smart enough to go to bed
@rwfrk_twitter not a bad idea but I can't :<
I got about three missions into HoT before calling it
I think one of my characters belongs to an order, but that's maybe being optimistic
ugh, RE: winter infusion
Okay, so I ran the numbers... and (assuming I did it right) if you buy 1,000g worth of presents by placing an order, open everything and sell every by posting (not insta-selling), and then using that gold, buy more presents, you should open a total of 120,120 presents which gives you approximately an 81.4% chance of opening an infusion. So if you buy it off the TP, you're paying under the "value", but it's not huge like I originally thought.
I regret burning all of my karma
Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:48
John smith thanks you
HoT's are more annoying in terms of length; Find a guildie you can just sit there for and watch tv?
Raids are another option.
god help me, pugging raids is garbo
did wing 1 and some of wing 2
Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:49
How near release? Surely you have guildies who are experienced by now....
I don't even remember anymore.
But probably. I just don't want to commit that much time grinding stuff to play the mode I actually want to play
Easier to just get ascended soldier trinkets and call it a day.
(or craft nomad exotic jewels, though it's a net stat loss)
Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:51
You can get the non-trinkets craft stuff via proofs. Maybe you'll see those for asc trinkets at some point..
haha maybe
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Dec 21 2016 17:52

Well guys, last day at work today, and I usually don't have this tab open at home.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all of you, we'll chat again in 2017 :D

Jonathan Andrist

Dec 21 2016 17:52
I mean, sure you can get exo versions, but ...eeeh.
Happy Holidays/New years! @Coffee4cr

Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:53
Even at a discount of 300g you'd be ahead!
I should just dump $50 or whatever and buy one off the TP
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Dec 21 2016 17:53
@lye but I wouldn't be 16 gambles closer to the achivement
and also finish nightfury orz

Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:53

Dec 21 2016 17:53

Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 17:53
Because of course that achivement is "Gamble the 250 ecto value" x times instead of "Gamble X worth of ecto"
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Dec 21 2016 17:54
I'm probably the only one in my guild without a legendary

Dec 21 2016 17:55

I really wish we could show those titles somewhere in PvE.
I can toggle my PvP badge on and off... Let me show off the mode I'm actually playing mostly.
besides. Only the enemy gets to see it. Its not cool enough to show my team?
it shows in the squad UI when the green boxes are big enough
Jonathan Andrist

Dec 21 2016 18:00
You can see the rank number in parties, but I've never had it work in squads.
oh, maybe I was in party, not squad
Jonathan Andrist
@rwfrk_twitter
Dec 21 2016 18:00
I'm more intrested in the title than the number for some reason.
Maybe because its based on 120, not 100, so you most people can't work it out in their head.
For /v2/pvp/games, I want a field name to indicate rating change
rating_change seems a bit long? But rating seems imprecise
