okay so
thoughts about exposing per-guild wvw kdrs
Archomeda
@Archomeda

i'm not that into wvw so i don't really have an opinion :(

that moment that you try to do fractal 100 challenge mote
and are torn between sleeping or trying again

I played with some WvW guilds for quite a while. If you do this, I imagine 2 things happening.

1) WvW forums (unofficial) will have the already toxic "we are better than you" players get even worse. But whatever, unofficial forum drama.

2) People will love you for more data to be had.

In all honesty, I don't see much bad coming from this, WvW guilds are already fairly cleanly divided into PPT guilds, zergbuster guilds, etc. I don't think there will be any unexpected elitism from this.

windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 02:00
especially because you get worse every minute
@Darqam I'm actually undecided about the effect on the salt forums. On one hand, yeah, people being salty. On the other, actual facts to back up claims.
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 02:59
Yeah, I can understand that, what I'm also trying to balance it out with, is the fact that almost no sever enjoys a "kill only" guild. A guild that focuses only and solely all the time on killing other players, is actually a loss for the server PPT wise... now again, this might just add fuel to the fire... or not... hard to say.
eh, I'm in a PPT guild right now and we still try to win fights when we take them
and like, fight guilds that respond to commander comms are always welcome in my book
anyway it's mostly a side effect of getting faster updating kill/death counters
unless it causes horrible load on the backend servers I'd like to ship it
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:11
well, worst case you close it down if WvW catches fire, right?
nah it wouldn't set WvW on fire
my implementation watches the event logs for character death events (across the entire game)
then filters that to only the ones on wvw maps, then figures out which team they're on and so forth
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:12
:O can we get a live death feed?
it might set an API server or two on fire, but the whole thing is designed so that the API can't bring anything else down with it (for the most part)
@Archomeda so... included in the character death logs are the location where the death occurred
it's really tempting to somehow provide a time-delayed anonymized (maybe with guild granularity) kill log
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:13
plot it on the maps :D
it'd have to be time-delayed though since it'd be a pretty significant tactical advantage if it was real-time
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:13
for wvw it kinda is yeah
for other bits and bobs I need to do some research to see how often people die
like the logs would have to be stored somewhere and data retention can be an issue
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:14
OMG YES Death heat maps across the game, PLEASE! :D
haha I'd only be able to provide the last N deaths for your character(s), but open an issue on github for it :>
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:16
Well, even with that, you could get something like gw2efficiency to start storing all that data on all the accounts it has to make a big death map
would be amazing!
I'll see if I can pull the historical logs and see how often people are dying on the live servers
If it's too frequently then you'll have to convince people to die less often for it to be feasible :>
(and/or I can just remove raid deaths)
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:18
would raid deaths really be that much compared to server wide deaths?
pfft no idea, maybe?
actually, pvp deaths might be much higher
man now I want to just look at a heat map and go "aha there's where most people die"
I bet our analytics team has one already
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:19
raiders /gg too much :D
you know
i bet that counts as a death
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:20
it does count++ for my /deaths yeah
that definitely emits a character death log then
it's a shame the skill used to kill you isn't logged
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:20
also SAB tribulation mode
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:21
I bet you that one ledge near the DR bank/merchant has a big patch of deaths
oof yeah lol
oh definitely
also jump puzzles are probably fun
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:21
You know you have to do this now, right?
I don't know if I have the technology
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:21
:/
I'll run the numbers tomorrow
Need to figure out what the retention costs are going to look like :|
also what's running on the other blades in that chassis for when the entire thing melts
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:25
crosses fingers
worst-case I can ask ops for another machine
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:26
also, keep in mind that if this does happen, you absolutely will have guild(s) running events to create a big red dot somewhere by having mass-suicides/deaths in chain
lmao
you'll only be able to see your own deaths, so they'll all have to give the same app their creds
and I'm only going to store the last N deaths, so it's @queicherius's problem at that point :D
(and it may never happen, seealso: guild chat API)
actually there's quite a few seealso's there; some things are just hard :/
Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:28
I want to laugh at that statement, but I feel sad doing so
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:29
i just want to spice up our guild discord with death messages :P

@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:30

@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:30

Dec 22 2016 03:32
oh, did that conversation about the websocket continue since last time?
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:32
no I dont think so
which part lol?
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:32
I think it was concluded by "meh its hard"
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:32
XD
I don't want to embed private keys in the client, so that's probably not going to happen
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:33
just call them not-so-private keys
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:33
when there was said that there are actually a lot of companies exploiting the private keys in their apps
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:33
we already have Not So Secret Jumpingpuzzles in the client anyway
not_so_secret.key
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:33
perfect
I'd also have to include a TLS implementation which is eugh
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:35
wait, there are no secure sockets used in the client :O
well I hope the launcher uses SSL
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:35
oh well, maybe... maybe we'll have an easier solution in the near future™ when there's a new standard developed by google (because chrome) for accessing local applications through webpages
there's at least 2 SSL implementations already included
@Archomeda there is. The recommendation from both chrome and mozilla is "use a browser extension"
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:36
that's hardly a solution really
Welcome to the web, where everything is a pile of hacks
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:36
ideally a website can ask for permissions to access a local application
or you can run something like noscript and make all things opt-in
which realistically everyone should be doing
but no one wears a helmet while riding their bike, that would be silly
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:37
yeah I am thinkinga bout that pretty hard
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:37
but hey, google also recommends on android to ask for permissions on the fly when you need it, and not in bulk beforehand, but google itself doesn't do that either
just do it; noscript is painful at first but it turns out you don't visit that many sites
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:37
hey, we dutchies are pretty capable of biking without helmet
and the ones that you do visit frequently end up on the whitelist
(manually, but whatever)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:38
urgh, android permissions are a mess
@windwarrior you also have bike lanes
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:38
wait, is that rare in the US?
yes
bikes usually share the road with cars lol
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:38
wow
we have them almost everywhere
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:39
the netherlands one of the only countries that has city bikes
incidentally, that's why there's a stigma against cyclists in the US
some of our cities have a city bike program
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:39
like for us it makes total sense to have a city bike
but most other countries people have mountain/cyclist bikes
because its more sport then convenience
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:40
i suppose everything is also mostly close enough here to make bikes useful in that regard
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:41
I biked in SF
LOL
I bet that was terrible
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:41
they gave me a racing bike
but had an instructor with it
THAT DIDNT KNOW HOW TO BIKE FAST
q.q
'here have a ferarri and go drive 15 miles an hour'
"down a 40' incline"
oh wait, it's SF. 60' incline.
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:43
yeah fuck that, I dont have breaks when I go downhill
dont need that
it's either brakes or 20km/h
hope you've got your helmet :>
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:45
@Archomeda dont go on bike things outside of The Netherlands
its always cringeworthy
I have a bike
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:46
also I was required to sign a contract and wear a helmet
after awhile the adrenaline wears off and you accept your inevitable, messy death
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:47
meh, I just use it mostly to get groceries
cus I dont have a car nor a drivers license
I just walk to the grocery store
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:48
yeah but the one really really close is expensive :(
food is really cheap in the US :D
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:48
so is gas
we got a gallon of fuel for $2.30
wait I thought you were dutch
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:49
that would be at least $6-7 in The Netherlands
(I did a tour of the states 2 years ago)
ah fair
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 03:49
yeah... it's like €1.65/l here D:
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:50
(went to SF -> LA -> Brazil -> NY -> Boston -> Chicago -> Washington DC )
urgh that replace went wrong
man I bet that was a fun trip
except for LA
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:51
even LA was fun
I have seen the space shuttle endeavor!
what time of year did you go?
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:52
8 nov -> 25 dec
so it was cold
very cold
wow that's a daring time to visit chicago
is it o'harra? the airport there gets closed due to blizzards almost every year
worst place to fly through
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:53

Dec 22 2016 03:54
metric system ftw
oh wow, that looks like a fun museum
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:55
they recently acquired one of those orange fuel tanks, and had 2 boosters somewhere
next time I'm in LA I'll have to check out the science center
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:55
so they are reconstructing the entire thing now

oh man their webpage

Without the familiar tug of gravity, poop doesn't fall off.

Darqam
@Darqam
Dec 22 2016 03:56
....
I may or may not be at home trying to kill a keg so I can replace it tomorrow
in any case poop is funny okay
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Dec 22 2016 03:58
but yeah would recommend
the space shuttle is pretty stupid
and fun to see
'reusable'
yeah, we've certainly come a long way

@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 04:04

man I was gonna settle down tonight and finish integrating TOML into my generic C99 unmarshaller
> ./main -t foo.toml -d -j
{
        "subs": [
                {
                        "c": { "type": "string", "value": "bar" }
                },
                "basic": {
                        "d": { "type": "integer", "value": "32" }
                }
        ]
}
looks like I'm going to need to seriously look at that bloody toml library
it can't even output valid json smh
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Dec 22 2016 04:44
haha :D
i need a good deployment system instead of just ssh'ing to my server, doing git pull and then restarting the service for my discord bots
but i've never actually worked with one before
I've used github web hooks before -- basically they send a HTTPS request to a server whenever a branch is updated, and then that server can git pull and restart services for you
As an alternative, you can configure a post-receive hook on your server so you can git push to them and have them recompile+restart services
You can get more complicated from there, but those are the most straightforward setups I've used.

Erm... Is anyone having a problem getting to the 'last' page in their PvP->Friends Guilds leaderboard? I used to be the last person. Now I can't even get NEAR my rating in the list...
A 'max' number of pages turned perhaps?
