Any of you guys know what's the best option to start learning app creation for ios while on a windows pc? Seem like most things I've tried have failed and it comes down to "Get a mac VM"
you're 100% going to need a mac
before getting a mac, I believe there are runtimes for both swift and obj-c on windows

@Darqam
May 10 2017 18:12
I'd say that's so dumb.... but that's in line with what I expect from macintosh
since you're pretty much tied to one of those, might be worth learning some of the language basics
that's apple for you, at least.
Darqam
@Darqam
May 10 2017 18:13
yeah, ok well I'll wait until the VM is done downloading then
depending on your budget, it may be worthwhile to pick up an old mac mini (or other cheap machine)
be wary that older hardware often can't run the latest OSX builds (which means no latest XCode and other things)

considering this was meant to be just a one time project, not sure I'll go that far
well, I'll see. thanks for the info Lye
yeah, no problem
good luck with your app :|
I can't wait until we get rid of all that garbage and just run BSD on everything

debian
wow
honestly I'd be happy with anything aside from the windows+osx duality we currently have
even if I have to use an inferior kernel+userland
the web is probably going to take us to that point but ugh

May 10 2017 18:29
OSX and BSD are pretty much the same ;)
yeah?
try sudo rm -rf / on OSX and get back to me on that

I got my friend with that once, showed him first on my FreeBSD box
bricked his rooted iPad

you need --no-preserve-root on macOS
lol they switched to the GNU implementation of rm

May 10 2017 18:50
it's so common these days
agreed, if no one's put the time into packaging it then I probably don't want to run it
(and if it's something I really want to run I'll package it myself)
windwarrior

May 10 2017 18:51
yeah, and my package manager is the sole program allowed to install stuff in non-home locations
I think docker had it on its site

swapping builds on a mesmer be like: swap all your stats, swap runes, swap trinkets, swap traits, swap skills
forget that you are running a stupid traitline
cry in a corner

maybe we'll get the GW1 build saving tech in the next expansion
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 19:08
well, I guess build templates are pretty complex
not sure if it is worth sinking a million time into
Nabrok
@Nabrok
May 10 2017 19:09
I think it is, but then I've been asking for it since day 1.
Separate wvw builds helped a bit though.
Nabrok
@Nabrok
May 10 2017 19:14
There have been times when anet has tried to encourage people to try different builds for specific situations, but it never works out because it's too much hassle to switch so they just for a generically good build and make-do, even if some adjustments would be better for a specific situation.

no patchnotes, still 80 MB
do you store version number in a texture?
obviously /s
I don't think so.
explains that then :smile:

  • Whoops.
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 22:55
but its a patch of nothing
of 80mb :')
how often is the version number sprinkled over the source
about 80mb worth
:>
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 22:57
:D
version number is an unsigned number of 80 million bytes
just in case this game gets updates forever
have there been smaller patches within the last six months?
it's possible that every patch has a full content manifest or something
I honestly have no idea how it works
inb4 one of y'all explain how patching works
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 23:01
(I am just messing obviously), I think (hot fix) patches are always in this ballpark
!remindme run wireshark next hotfix
There was a discussion in here at one point about how manifests get fetched
there's some URL that you can grab it from or something
JC123
@JC123
May 10 2017 23:03
every build has a unique set of file manifests yes lol
does each build's manifest have every file id or something?
JC123
@JC123
May 10 2017 23:03
yes
I can see there being 80MB of file ids
well then.
that seems kind of silly.
@windwarrior see, I knew there was someone here who knew how patching worked
windwarrior
@windwarrior

windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 23:04
wait git is pretty efficient
JC123
@JC123
May 10 2017 23:04
every build the client downloads the root manifest and then each sub manifest and checks for file ids that dont exist in the dat and then downloads them. any file ids that do exist that are no longer in the manifest are deleted from the dat
windwarrior
@windwarrior
May 10 2017 23:05
kind of makes sense
because you can fast forward then
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
May 10 2017 23:06
Well git is efficient, yes, but it does technically include a full file list with every commit
in its own special way

you can also learn a lot from watching the first commiit

a coworker complained about git being 200+ mb
well... it brings half of linux
and perl, and python, and ..
because most commands are actually scripts
shortcuts to the few internal commands git knows

omg, patching gw2 -> my fans go full speed
what kind of maintenance patch is that?!
