you know your basics, allright then :) although 2nd reality was a full blown demo, not a size limited one
(back in 93 that meant a couple megabytes)
this is what's possible nowadays in only 65536 bytes (including all assets and music)

any decent way to debug css glitches that only appear when viewing on a mobile?
only results so far seem to involve using chrome's inspect element + usb cable
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 19:12
that works great though
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 19:24
alright thanks for endorsing it, guess I'll get chrome.
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 19:31
probably the first time I've installed chrome since I needed a browser for a W95 laptop.
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 19:45
Chrome also has a built-in way to shrink the viewport
firefox does too
ChieftainAlex

time to brush up on line-height font-size fuckery

the only differences I can see between these two span elements are the line-height and font-size... which are both set the by the same css rules.
although when I press edit for the css, there's whitespace around the table element with the arrow
unrelated.

@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:13
Hmm. I can't reproduce it with just the dev console..
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:13
I can
but not sure whats causing it
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:13
How? Lemme see

Jul 10 2017 20:14
for what its worth I've had this issue on my blackberry, a nokia, an ipod touch and a samsung, fairly confident this bug is cross mobile platform :P

Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:15
I can't get it to break D:
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:16
deleted something just there which fixed the appearance on my version.
-_- pasted original back in, no breaking
javascript..
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:17
the chrome console should show the current state of the DOM, including any JS fiddling
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:18
my guess is the minimum font size of the browser with the set viewport size is doing something weird
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:19
given that it "should" be the same font-size for both types of element (static + collapsible) it'd have to be something obscure
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:19
yep :(
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:19
my version of the page breaks in a completely different way
image.png
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:20
that's just the fixed width element being shitty..
:D
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:21
but it doesn't happen in either of your screenshots..
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:26
can you toggle whole stylesheets on/off in chrome?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:27
well... you can open the stylesheet in Sources and ctrl+a delete it :D
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:27
or just delete the link tag in the head
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:27
knew chrome was shite :D
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:28
Which browser lets you do that?
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:28
firefox.
sweet jesus gitter's css is huge

darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:29

Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:29
ooh, chrome has JS/CSS coverage testing
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:32
yes
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:33
that'd be neat if I could add it to my rspec suite
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:33
gitter is only using 17% of their css :(
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:33
well
in order to properly test it, you'd have to visit every page and click everything
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:33
because gitter has so many other pages
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:33
dynamic elements though
like when you click on a person
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:34
83% dynamic windows?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:34
I believe it
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:34
83% embeds
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:34
plus any styles that trigger on hover, or only with certain settings..yeah
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:35
looking at the css, they have included bootstrap and only use the resets of it
thats 50% unused right there
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:35
okay I'll give you that one XD
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:37
image.png
just look at that :(
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:37
what does your coverage tab say?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:38
hmm?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:38
I clicked and hovered around a bit and managed to get 45% coverage
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:38
let me try again :P
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:39
btw after deleting all the stylesheets on that page i was looking at earlier, the font sizes are still different >.>
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:40
ok I tried again, clicking around (creating room/community screen), hovering, ... 69.5% unused for router-app.css, 81.0% unused for router-chat.css
still bad
@ChieftainAlex maybe chrome is changing the font size for elements with attached click handler on touch screens?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Jul 10 2017 20:41
..Is it counting comments as uncovered?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 20:41
well, those are bytes that are transfered but not used
so yes
man bootstrap is so 2012
surprised that people still use it

ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:43
welp css changes not cached, managed to accidentally leave the page after an hour of messing about ;)
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 20:55
firefox for android didn't break anything ... guess it's chrome + safari.
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 21:03
found the problem btw, "font boosting".. needs <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
and when that's applied all manner of other max-width problems popup so they all look like Earslya's screenie
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Jul 10 2017 21:07
you should probably just use https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MobileFrontend then instead of trying to force a responsive theme into mediawiki
its not really built for that :(
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Jul 10 2017 21:16
you're right of course, but I've fixed it for vector (not monobook the default skin) with two lines of css and one line of html. I'll see if my edit breaks anything else
