@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:31
Snooze? :D
maybe
dealing with SPF records right now
this would be a lot easier if had a real OS
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:33
urgs... best of both worlds DNS and email :/
right?
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:34
let me guess: change stuff and wait for dns to flush?
repeat until not broken
no
the record causes more than 10 DNS queries
so it's rejected by MTA's
so all of our outgoing email is rejected
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:35
oh boy...
as an added act of irony I don't have access to our DNS records
so I have to send updates to someone else via email
i can't escape
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:36
It's even worse than I expected :'(
good luck with that, I can remind you in a couple of days :D
i'm literally downloading a freebsd ISO to install in virtualbox
have the tiles updated at all since tuesday?
I can start uploading the tiles i generated previously
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:38
hmm I think the demo map is still a part of the map in game
it's just the demo map in the tiles
i'm just gonna upload it idc
worst-case i get fired and don't have to look at SPF records anymore
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:39
I don't think it's more than just the demo map
noooooo who will be our best gw2-dev-ever then?
who shall we blame if the api is broken? xD
i dunno but there would be a new web headcount open :3
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:40
I didn't know you could put DNS in an SPF record, huh
18 included queries
wait where are you seeing 18
the limit is 10
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:40
how does 4 domains make 18
CNAME lookups
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:41
Too many included lookups (18)
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:41
you still don't have anyone to fill pat's position?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:41
he filled pat's position
look at me
i am the pat now
Eearslya Sleiarion

I would love to join you guys if I had any actual web dev experience to show and you guys weren't 2 hours away
sigh
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:42
I mean "did you fill the hole pat left (besides the one in your heart)" ? :D
@Eearslya you should start grinding web xp
@ptolstoi yeah we did
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:43
I would but I don't have any inspiration
just make the next facebook
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 17:43
that's nice to hear!
obviously
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:43
pls
I mean, I suppose making it would definitely show dev skills
but nobody would use it
you could make an io game
in jervascript
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:45
oh I see why there's so many lookups
!!! why
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:45
because the people you're referring to have lookups too
yeah
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:45
image.png
but how many lookups does each of them incur
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:46
well there's 3
wait wait does it RECURSIVELY check SPF records?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:46
2 from zdsys
it would have to
yeah digging into this, it goes deep
bluehornet goes to outlook which goes to another outlook
we need all of those unfortunately
because we have 99 different people sending email from guildwars2.com
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:48
you could cut out some middlemen
example: you include zdsys.com
which refers to _spf.zdsys.com
which refers to _netblocks.zdsys.com
so just do the last one
That seems reasonable
I'll futz with that once I get this VM stood up
so I have access to actual tooling
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:50
mxtoolbox is a really nice site for this stuff
good lord google has a lot of IPs

Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:55
So why did this pop up all of a sudden? New mail provider?
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Aug 22 2017 17:56
well, if anyone asks how you are progressing, you can now say taylor swift is on it
@Eearslya apparently gem purchase receipt emails were going to the spam folder
so I updated our SPF record
now all email is going to the spam folder

@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:57

oic
I'm not sure recursive SPF records count
otherwise this would be way more than 16 lookups
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 17:59
zdsys alone accounts for 7 lookups
I think it adds up
how did this ever work
the limit is 10
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Aug 22 2017 18:00
this tool has spf record flattening: https://dmarcian.com/spf-survey/
679,447 authorized individual IPv4 addresses
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Aug 22 2017 18:01
yep :(
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:01
the problem with flattening them is you're screwed if your provider changes
There's some /16's in there
ip4:74.125.0.0/16
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:02
2 of em I think
3 actually, wow
I mean I don't need to flatten down to IPs, I just need to flatten down the includes
the /16's are probably google/amazon
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:04
663,538,278,908,603,056,604,279,996,416 authorized ipv6
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 18:04
wat
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:04
there's a /29
and 6 /36s
huh, surprisingly the /29 isn't from google, it's mktomail
also @lye might wanna move the spf to a TXT record
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Aug 22 2017 18:14
thats where I got https://dmarcian.com/spf-survey/ from
@Eearslya there's already a TXT record, I just need to get the SPF one deleted.
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya

ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Aug 22 2017 18:37
new housemate thought it was a good spot for his bike.. nope.
so how come Lye is the e-mailman?
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:37
(have legitimately heard someone say they were told to close the windows because it was letting the wi-fi out)
web programming is email I guess?
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 18:37
ahaha
i don't know why this is my problem
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:38
seems more like an operations thing but

Quaggan BooOOoot
@QuagganBooOOoot
Aug 22 2017 18:38
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ops lul
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Aug 22 2017 18:38
did you really make all email spam?
only with providers that aggressively check and validate SPF records
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:38
spam checkers can't verify the SPF record
or, more accurately, they refuse to
ChieftainAlex
@ChieftainAlex
Aug 22 2017 18:39
18/10 is unreasonable
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:40
it's mainly the fault of the providers who decide to hide their records 3 levels deep
using a third-party email provider is apparently a huge mistake
using multiple third-party email providers is an act of suicide
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:40
zdsys.com -> _spf.zdsys.com -> _netblocks.zdsys.com just why
likely google
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:41
they do include google too
hmm, they use ultradns
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:41
google sort of makes sense, because they have so many IP address blocks they have to split up the records
they might have just looked at what google did and copied the records
:shrug:
guessing that I can just cut out all of the outlook/google stuff though
since that's literally so they can send personal email from their domain via outlook/gmail/etc
so the SPF record might just be v=spf1 mx include:spf1.mailgun.org include:spf2.mailgun.org include:spf.bluehornet.com include:_netblocks.zdsys.com include:digitalrivercontent.com ~all
which is 6 lookups
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 18:52
What about mktomail?
don't know what it is so whatever
darthmaim
@darthmaim
Aug 22 2017 19:11
they probably use it for their own marketing
ironic, given blue hornet is a marketing services company
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 20:33
i can't force login myself into an old build can i?
i crashed in dragon's stand in the old build :(
nope, gotta use the new build
smiley
@codemasher
Aug 22 2017 21:50
lol, back in the day they used the game engine for replays, nowadays they just stream from twitch :D http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1117825406
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 23:06
what is actually blocking the client from using an older build? the initial cdn build lookup, or the actual login?
in the first case, you can probably circumvent that
JC123
@JC123
Aug 22 2017 23:07
once the old expires it wont let you login anymore
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 23:07
bah :(
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 23:09
I bet it's the login servers
should be the client gateway servers
part of the handshake is sending the build id
i might be wrong about that though
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 22 2017 23:10
there's gotta be some step where it sends build id at least
i'm super unfamiliar with the client-server comm stuff for the game bits
it uses a different protocol than the backend components that I deal with :|
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 22 2017 23:11
oh well, it only screwed me over in dragon's stand, that's all :/
at least i actually did open the pods while the rest of dragon's stand was doing the meta event hehe
before my client crashed
hmm, the tile generator is still running. It's been running for hours and hours now.
I think it might be broken or something. This is really unusual.
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 22 2017 23:57
the map is bigger now
so that might hit some hardcoded stuff
