@Archomeda is it still broken?
It's loading for me (from DFW though)

also:
overview:1 Refused to execute script from 'https://account.staticwars.com/gen/i18n/strings-en.bb469562.js' because its MIME type ('text/html') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled.
actually, that URL gives a 404, lol
yeah the text/html is almost always an error page from ARR
apparently a NIC on one of the FRA live web machines failed
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 00:16
it really is a shitty month isn't it? D:
however, i still find this 404 genius
image.png
Wonder if flushing the cloudfront cache for that page will clear it
kicked off an invalidation for account.staticwars.com/*
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 00:20
the js file is returning a script now
and the account page works again
:+1:
woot, t hanks
I wonder if I can configure CF to not cache 404's :<
because that's going to be a pain in the butt
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 00:21
why does it even cache a 404?
:shrug:
apparently it can be configured to not do that
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 00:22
well, that's good
i seriously hope it doesn't cache 500 either
yeah there were existing 30-second TTLs for 502/503
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 00:23
that's... not too bad
not sure why 404 was kicked back by the origin though
gonna go through all of our web CF distributions and make sure they all make sense ;_;

windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 16:31
So apparently dulfy has a 1000$/month hosting fee
Is it me or does that sound like an insane amount of money for such a website
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 25 2017 16:41
AWS relational databases seems overkill...
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 16:44
Her site is mostly static content isn't it
she has comments, sure, but mostly guides
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 25 2017 16:50
note that I am looking into reducing the RDS costs since it is fairly large due to the theme I am using
how does a theme need a relational database
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 16:51
Well it's a wordpress site
Dunno what themes can do in Wordpress but maybe some super inefficient queries
(As in, for example displaying certain overviews that are jus inefficient to compute)
Edgar Doiron
@Coffee4cr
Aug 25 2017 16:54
but she has more than just GW2 traffic right?
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 16:54
Yeah 4 MMOs or so
Wordpress is a perf gobbler, for sure.
She could probably get that down to $400/mo overall with dedicated hosting.
But that'd require someone to donate sysadmin time (both for migration and babysitting)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:16
Yeah, I guess AWS is pretty convenient for her
Eearslya Sleiarion
@Eearslya
Aug 25 2017 17:16
I feel like gw2e does a lot more than dulfy's site for less. But que is also the sysadmin, so...
I think gw2e costs more than dulfy, doesn't it?
doesn't he have like 8x physical machines

windwarrior

Aug 25 2017 17:19
well they are probably not managed @lye
unmanaged boxes of reasonable size run like $200/month
maybe I setup deployments wildly different from everyone else
I grab 2+ $200/month machines from 100tb/hetzner, install the DB on both of 'em (master/slave replication) and set up the slave as the app server
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:21

ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:33
@windwarrior have you tried asm.js? you "just" compile with their c++ compiler instead of your default one, and it "just works"... two years ago it took me like a week to render a cube from c++ in the browser
I didn't try Unreal in the browser, but the job Unity does is impressive
they compile c# to IL (mono does it actually) then, they transpile IL to c++ and then they compile the c++ to javascript xD
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:34
I am mostly wondering about how interaction between the two works, that you can transform a c++ codebase in something that makes sense in the JS world.. sure
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:34
and it works...
well not everything works
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:35
but apparantly emscripten implements SDL for web
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:35
goto/jumps are really hard....
you can take alook at the asm.js article from wikipedia, it describes the most interesting parts
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:38

windwarrior

but tbf, wordpress is way too heavy in all cases
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:47
I'm not sure how much DB her db uses: http://db.dulfy.net/
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:48
/v2/items is about 40MB
as in, all of it
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:48
oh right, there's that too
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:48
hmm true but... if you put all the images into the database :D
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:48
why would you do that
regular storage is cheaper :P
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:49
why would you pay $600 for db? xD
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:49
i think she can save a lot on that RDS
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:50
I mean we (I) don't know any technical details about her website... but thats just waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:50
that's my thought too
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:51
I blame wordpress
I haven't looked into it like for 2-3 years, but at that time there was no caching at all
if you query the db x times every time you open a post... welp... rip
just a simple varnish would drop the cost for the db by a significant amount
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:54
her site apparently doesn't fully support https either rip
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 17:54
(is varnish still in? xD)
windwarrior
@windwarrior
Aug 25 2017 17:55
so you pay per hour at RDS
assuming she just has a DB on all the time
she must have a very beefy db
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 17:58
yeah
windwarrior
@windwarrior

i think her theme has been there for at least 2-3 years now right?

I offered my support in cutting down the outrageous web hosting cost for the website so 750 request per page load wouldn't be necessary to keep the website up and running.

second-hand account though, might not be fact.

Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:11

oh, that sucks :(
I'll pass that on to the team that's responsible for the page design
ptolstoi
@ptolstoi
Aug 25 2017 18:13
well maybe shes right... If you don't want to deal with such stuff and you can pay it and it just works... why not
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:14
but yeah, the time remaining is shown on the promotions tab, so it's just more of an improvement really
also, i actually think that the "You can buy 1 more at this price." is overriding the remaining time :/

Aug 25 2017 18:25
@lye @Coffee4cr @Eearslya @windwarrior gw2e costs about 100/month in raw server costs from hetzner, I use one farily beefy server which I sniped from a server auction with a small script and I manage it myself (and some very tiny vms for various things). I did the calculations with amazon before and came up at around 2-3k/month at the time, mainly for storage space and CPU time. With lamda it's about 250/month for cpu but then another 300 for the managed DB roughly (and thats with very low reads/writes estimates)
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:25
MM-DD-YYYY instead of YYYY-MM-DD
@Archomeda it's the only entry like that
I'm not sure how they managed it
@queicherius hot damn that's amazing

David Reeß
@queicherius
Aug 25 2017 18:25
before adding the backend crawing of accounts I was running on 1$/month, its farily easy to keep costs super minimal if you optimize a bit for it
I thought there was a datepicker
I'm not even sure how the designers managed to input that as a date
I need to find a dedicated server provider on this side of the atlantic that has deals as good as hetzner :(
otherwise I'm just gonna host all my stuff in germany forever
Edgar Doiron

dunno, the files are big; so far i've found recurring things put in the featured category
next month there will be some seasonal things swapping apparently
well, tomorrow the bank tabs are going to be on sale, but that's nothing new
for 2 days
and the black lion keys will be on sale too, for 3 days, wow :P
nothing else listed in the discounted category though
do note that anything in that file in the future is subject to change
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:44
yeah, didn't expect otherwise
also that file might go away in the future
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:45
blegh :/
it might not though, who knows
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:45
i assume that file is new since the new gem store page
yeah
some of the content exporting bits changed I guess
I came on as lead just as gs2 was wrapping up
I'm not sure why that file isn't generated dynamically (so you can't see future things)

would be happy enough just seeing the current stuff tbh
80% chance it'll change to be dynamically-generated to hide future things
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:46
i assume it's generated whenever there's a new build
yeah, it's per-build
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:46
judging by the file name
or url rather
yeah, current stuff is basically all we could hope for
future stuff, well... didn't expect it really
color us both surprised

                {

                    "start":"2017-09-14T16:00:00Z"
                }
            ],
            "03552198-EEDC-4887-B56C-0FF6563E72AD":[
                {

                }
            ],

these items will be introduced, but the GUIDs can't be found in the catalog file; so...

i guess your team is safe there :smile:

Archomeda

Aug 25 2017 18:52
maybe :)
but i guess we can expect a new build next tuesday
or before, that will add them to the static js files
the catalog file definitely excludes things that aren't released

there are more GUIDs listed for september btw
they... are just not in order, hmm
ehh
            "0E2521B1-9B33-412B-B013-248272220BED":[
                {

                    "start":"2017-09-05T16:00:00Z"
                }
            ],
that GUID does exist in the catalog file

tbh when you first started pinging datestamps I thought you were going to be finding ones with start dates after end dates for every permanent gemstore item
oh wait I thought you were talking about https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/gemstore/catalog
which apparently I never turned on
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:57
no... i'm talking about this catalog
@ChieftainAlex that would not surprise me at all
ah yeah that catalog ... probably ... doesn't exclude future items
we should probably fix that
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Aug 25 2017 18:57
https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/items/82666 is the new item that will be released on september 5th
yup, unreleased :P
curious how many VIPs they're accepting via twitter

What's the maximum number of items that get shown with /v2/commerce/delivery?
whatever the server can return before timeout
not sure what the upper bound on that is
JamEngulfer
@JamEngulfer
Aug 25 2017 23:41
I'm pretty sure that in-game, the delivery box only shows 100 stacks at a time
i should probably change that endpoint at some point
the server combines stacks as it's querying the database
so if the UI displays 10 stacks of 50 the API will return 1 stack of 500
JamEngulfer
@JamEngulfer
Aug 25 2017 23:42
Oh, that's... weird
(otherwise it consumes too much bandwidth and blows up super easily)
JamEngulfer
@JamEngulfer
Aug 25 2017 23:43
I guess that does make sense. Especially if you're placing a massive buy order and they get delivered a few at a time
