oh dear, intel has a critical security vuln
amazon's servers will have a forced reboot next friday, i wonder how it will affect the gw2 servers: https://twitter.com/jschauma/status/941447173245370368

apparently you can expect a performance loss of 5-30%
depending on the application

@SchoolGuy
Jan 03 2018 13:20 UTC
Yes I guess that this will be a major issue for V-Servers because the loss is adding... So Host-loss + Guest-loss, then I guess we will be way over 30%

although, i just noticed that this was from december, heh
it's always fun when something gets linked from a new article, and that tweet is from almost a month ago without you noticing it..

well the tweet was just about some work on KPTI
it's interesting however how much secretkeeping is done about this

the flaw is in the Intel x86-64 hardware, and it appears a microcode update can't address it. It has to be fixed in software at the OS level, or go buy a new processor without the design blunder.

hah, design blunder :P

@Archomeda well has somebody told us yet what processors are lacking that design blunder? i suppose only AMD?

i guess? i dunno

Jan 03 2018 13:47 UTC
yeah, amd is not affected
Archomeda
@Archomeda
Jan 03 2018 13:47 UTC
i think only amd has stated that their cpus are unaffected
well, for that bug, apparently not the fix (yet)

that sounds like the good old pentium bug, just on a larger scale :D

words you wouldn'd have dared to utter back in the day: "intel-amd processor"

@lye I had to use my gw2 contact list to reach SCW, to get some news for us :)

Glad to see you are "back"

I'm "back" in mostly an observational role

@codemasher but what is the usecase of that thing? Too much tdp for notebooks and the design is too bothersome for classic tower setups - why bother with that combi thing when you can just buy a gpu and a cpu?
@lye so you have to assign some slaves to work on our mindbreakingly specific wishes.

that's the question. my gtx1080 is still laughing...
that's maybe the goal we're still trying to figure out the details

that embargo seems to run out tomorrow, so i suppose the other parties involved (like the linux kernel team) will give us more information
embargo was originally next week

so according to google that flaw is in ARM and AMD processors as well?

Jan 03 2018 23:51 UTC
it's just a design flaw at how branch prediction works apparently
which basically every processor manufacturer implements
or something, i dunno, haven't read through all of it

i had a glance over it, seems about right
technical details
https://aws.amazon.com/security/security-bulletins/AWS-2018-013/ i guess amazon has moved the scheduled reboot to now, instead of at the end the week
