@edenhill i notice if I don't set a group.id in the RdKafka\Conf passed to RdKafka\KafkaConsumer ( in that high level example ) that I get a segmentation fault - so this property is mandatory - is that obvious ? do we always have to subscribe as part of a consumer group?

@jstean The segmentation fault shouldn't happen, but you will need a group.id to commit offsets even if you just use the assign() API and not subscribe()

yes using subscribe(). but consistently causes segmentation fault without the gorup.id

@edenhill so if we want all consumer instances to all get the same message on a topic, do we restrict that topic to a single partition and ensure consumers all have a unqieu group id?
