Hi all. I'm exploring how to create custom extensions (in Java) for an asciidoctor docs-as-code pipeline (I have been working with Sphynx, but I decided to switch to a Java-based solution). However, so far I've found a wide variety of blogs from a few years ago. Could you give me an advice on good up-to-date references for asciidoctor/Java extensions development?
Romain Manni-Bucau
@rmannibucau
Hi all,
I'm using asciidoctor-pdf (java flavor) and I have a hard time getting callouts working, it renders as [] - so I assume it is identified but something is wrong in the custom theme but not sure how to identify it, no log/warn
I think it misses the font with number chars ( ③ ), M +1m or something like that but it is defined in the theme so not sure where to look to find the cause
Romain Manni-Bucau
@rmannibucau
hmm, i changed code font family so conum inheritance does not work (font_family: $literal_font_family)
guess less references cross "block" in the base theme can have helped?
was it :)

How can I disable source-highlighter with my prepress pdf?
I tried with this and it seems not work.
          <execution>
            <id>process-asciidoc-pdf-prepress</id>
            <phase>generate-resources</phase>
            <goals>
              <goal>process-asciidoc</goal>
            </goals>
            <configuration>
              <attributes>
                <media>prepress</media>
                <pdf-style>default-for-print</pdf-style>
               <source-highlighter/> <!-- doesn't work either -->
                <source-highlighter>none</source-highlighter>
              </attributes>
              <backend>pdf</backend>
              <outputDirectory>${project.build.directory}/pdf-prepress</outputDirectory>
              <skip>false</skip>
            </configuration>
          </execution>

Hey everyone - I'm currently using jbake and freemarker to build a static website with a few pages built using the asciidoctor integration.
It's working very well, but I'm looking at moving to a more javascript heavy frontend so I'm investigating building the site using npm and a stack (maybe handlebars?) for templating and resource packing. Is there a similar or recommended framework that gives the same functionality that jbake / freemarker / asciidoctor in a node environment?

@johncarl81
LOL, Hi Dan!

@djencks
First of all, the community has moved to Zulip, Gitter is here only for historical purposes. Second, you might investigate Antora… IMO it’s amazing.
John Ericksen
@johncarl81
oh snap... I didnt know. And thanks @djencks , ill check it out.
Daniel Hinojosa
@dhinojosa
I dig Antora, I think I have one issue with it. But I haven’t used it enough to consider it worthwhile to mention. I am going to use it some more though. That one thing I may have an issue with might be the best thing for me and what I do.
djencks
@djencks
Out of curiosity, what is your issue?
Daniel Hinojosa
@dhinojosa
Just the organization it seems like too much work for some cases. The antora.yml, subcomponents, the playbooks. For some things it is tons of work for little gain. But if you have a ton of material and you would like the ability to pick a choose different content, a different playbook for different situations it seems that antora has a huge win. The versioning is a big win. Again, I haven’t used it that much yet, so I may have need to experience my aha moment with it
There aren’t many themes but that will come in time the more the community uses it.
djencks
@djencks
Actually, what I’ve found most amazing about it is that the organization forces me to think more clearly about my content. I use it for even very small sites for that reason.
Daniel Hinojosa
@dhinojosa
Yeah, I can see that for sure.
djencks
@djencks
Reorganizing an existing site to use antora can be a lot of work however. Some of the new features in antora 3 can help, such as symlinks .
Daniel Hinojosa
@dhinojosa
And that’s where I need to be more open minded and I think there will be a huge payoff because I already have huge repos of training material broken up into chapters. If I can harness that org ability to pick and choose different material for different reasons and contexts I’d be set.
djencks
@djencks
I think you’ll like it. I think most or all of the neo4j doc site is using antora now, certainly the training material.
John Ericksen
@johncarl81
Antora looks nice.. unfortunately I don't think its flexible enough for my use case - I am not building a documentation site, only a portion of the site is asciidoc and I need the ability to develop custom pages.

@djencks
Certainly, it may not be for you. However… (1)you can use it to build part of your site. For instance Apache Camel uses Hugo to build the less docs oriented part of its site and Antora for the docs. (2) you can do some amazing customizations with Antora, for instance this blog: https://blog.yuzutech.fr. It’s also not too hard to develop arbitrarily complex page layouts using layouts in the ui bundle and an extension that provides nested open blocks.

@dhinojosa If you ask your question in https://antora.zulipchat.com, I'm happy to answer you there. We've thought about how to organize and manage documentation for almost 5 years and I can assure you that the organization we came up with it fitting for the problem space. The structure it provides is a key strength of Antora and has proven itself as being very effective. It's not just for ceremony and it is not too much work.
Daniel Hinojosa
@dhinojosa
Absolutely. I know you think about all solutions very thoroughly. @mojavelinux. I'll ask there as soon as I can get my bearings so I can word it a bit better.

Hi @mojavelinux !
I've submitted an issue in May : asciidoctor/asciidoctor-pdf#1933
I would like to know if you could help me to try to implement it...

Hello everyone,
Is it possible to do a link in a source block?
Romain Manni-Bucau
@rmannibucau
hmm, seems links can be interpolated but not xref?
(link enabling subs="normal")
issue with links for anchors is that the # prevents the link to be rendered, guess some subs can be needed again
Romain Manni-Bucau
@rmannibucau
yes think there is a limitation there with hash links (or/and xref) in source blocks whatever sub config is if you want to keep verbatim support :(
fun thing is it happens in idea asciidoctor editor (js?) but not with asciidoctorj in programmatic mode, any known diff there?

Still no bridge for Matrix?
Dan Allen
@mojavelinux
No, we are not perusing that because it wrecks the topic-model that Zulip provides, which has been instrumental in making the conversation organized and manageable. I'm sorry if that's an inconvenience for some, but that is just not how we are going to run this community. It impacts me the most, and my time is already extremely limited. We switched to Zulip because we needed something that was better organized and that's what Zulip has given us. A year of using it proves that unequivocally.

How can you shrink the font size of text in a third column in a table ?

[grid=none,frame="none",%autofit]

%autofit doesn't seem to be working

[small] is not working either , is it supposed to for table cells ?

Sorry if I've missed this in documentation, but I was wondering if it was possible to publish book chapters independently of the parent book. My use-case is that I'm hoping to collate our development policies and practices into one document (i.e. the book), but it would also be useful to be able to easily get each of the policies (chapters?) produced for external users (clients, auditors, etc.)
