@jfcarr There is astroplan. However, that package is still very much in development, and the API might change. In my experience, it's also much slower than PyEphem (although that's probably due to its dependency on astropy.coordinates). If you're doing anything that requires speed or a stable API, I'd recommend staying with PyEphem for now.

bsipocz The current development branch is already had a few speedups, and a few more are in the works. Any help in the forms of PRs to sort out performace issues are more than welcome.
