I’m going to be entertaining some jobs in a few months, but I think it’s highly unlikely I’d leave my current situation as much as I might like another job
would have to be really good work
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:06
hehe yeah. I'm unhappy with my current job. so i'm happy to leave
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:08
Well… I think I’d be a lot happier with the work other places, but it’s hard to know what I’m leaving. I was the first employee at a startup that’s becoming more successful every week. It’s sort of a crappy position to be in, though. You can stay and get nothing or leave and miss out on something. Might as well stick it out for a while though

very true
I've been fairly unhappy for almost a year.. getting to my end of patience :p

I told one of the founders the work needed to get more interesting and challenging and basically said I’m leaving the first chance I get and a lot has actually changed since then, so worth sticking around. I think it’s rare shit actually happens when you complain. Everything is so bureaucratic everywhere. So that makes me think the grass is probably not greener on the other side. It never is

Very true
i will miss where i'm working now. But salary wise for example they never done anything about.
and I'm still 'fighting' with everyone to get things done.

it’s hard to hire good people, and hard to end up in a good place, and the two are probably related

defo
with the company i'm applying for i worked a little bit with the guys i will be working with. so i know a little bit how they work and how they think
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:17
ahh that’s nice
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:17
and they are open for discussions and trying things out
My function will be a bit more global IT thing. finding things to improve and guide the projects and stuff
one of the first things i would be working on is giving more power to the developers for example.
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:18
more power in what way?
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:18
currently a lot of the stack definitions ( what kind of things an application needs ) is under control by infra team. but the dev teams know what each application needs
like connections to the outside world.
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:19
gotcha
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:19
and if they need a test environment they currently have to ask the infra team
so want to build a chatbot for slack so they can spin up environments easy
they already have automated deployments but that also needs to be improved
so the goal is to improve workflow without putting more work to the infra team
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:20
oooooh yeah that would be awesome
we always wanted a chat bot to do things like that but everyone’s too busy to do crap like that at my work
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:21
hehe yeah
i won't be expected to build everything, but start the projects and guide it ( and do some stuff my self as well )
and there are more projects that i saw that can be started to improve things
Richard Pijnenburg
@electrical
Jan 26 2016 09:28
@kuujo if i have some basic things for the bot i can always share it with you. of course implementation specific things i can't do :p
Jordan Halterman
@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:29
That would be awesome. I’d definitely be interested

Ugh... My internet just crashed and burned. Guess that means it's time for a nap. Got some of the Raft internals docs done though: http://atomix.io/copycat/user-manual/internals/

oh very nice. I'll have a look through that. always nice to understand it.
catch you later

@kuujo
Jan 26 2016 09:46
Probably have to finish cleaning it up tomorrow for it to make much sense. I think it's still a mess right now and I just kind of said nonsense in some of the sections. But it's a lot to go through (that doc was 33 pages in Google Docs)
Later
