Hello again @fosskers as I commented before, I wanted to propose a logo/branding for Aura, and I was wondering what's the origin of the Aura name, what made you choose that name, what is its meaning, if you could tell me a bit about it that would be incredibly helpful in better representing the project on the logo/branding.
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
Yes
I got lucky with the name
I like it because:
  1. It's AUR + a
  2. It's shorter than pacman
  3. It's "spiritual" and feels good
  4. There's only one other FOSS project with that name, but it has something to do with desktop environments.
Have you tried aura -V in your terminal?
The only thing else that's remotely logo-like is: https://github.com/fosskers/aura/blob/master/aura/exec/aura.hs#L9
So, there's definitely a feel of it having evolved from pacman
Cristiano Vitorino
@cristianovitorino
Got it! Thank you! Yes I have tried aura -V : D

Here's a fun idea for aura: My aura -Syu workflow is this: Start aura -Syu, look at archlinux.org, see things like https://www.archlinux.org/news/zn_poly-092-2-update-requires-manual-intervention/, be sure I'm not affected, continue the update. Could that be automated? Just show the message from the website, if one of my installed package names is included in a post on the website since the last install.
This would be feasible, if one can
  1. find out reliably which packages are going to be updated (or: are installed? That one is feasible for sure)
  2. find out the last package upgrade per-package (I don't know the feasibility of this)
  3. fetch new updates from the archlinux.org website (I guess you could use the rss feed: https://www.archlinux.org/feeds/news/)
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
Not a bad idea, we'd need to devise a way to detect a "new" entry there
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
I'd personally love this feature, since I almost always get bitten by those occasional manual overrides.

coming soon™
Would you prefer a PR from a personal (bb010g/aura) branch, or an upstream (fosskers/aura) branch?
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
ooooooooooo
I had had that on the backburner for a while
Nick Hambuchen was helping me with it directly
I was having trouble getting the custom GHC to build recently, so shelved it for ab it
Ideally this is how I want to release Aura via aura-bin
Binary size should reduce from 25mb to < 10mb
It reduced to 9mb the last time I checked, but since then I did a big purge of dependencies, so it should be even smaller now.
Fire it up via bb010g/aura - I think after I moved aura back to my personal account, everyone's contributor status was lost
On my end, after 6 years I'm finally fixing this: https://github.com/fosskers/aura/issues/208#issuecomment-628787592 :P

@fosskers

Implementing fosskers/aura#462
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
Released 3.0.0. aura will also be on Stackage soon.
I'll be fixing up the PKGBUILD of the original aura package on the AUR today, so that it actually compiles.
I'll be doing a website for it soon too, and then putting out more announcements about 3.0
Big changes:
  • aura.conf
  • the new -P command.
  • Expanded --hotedit
  • Persistence of VCS package sources

@fosskers
I just released aura-3.0.0 on the AUR.

Re: contributor statuses, yeah, those were lost.

@bb010g
Draft PR is up at #601.
I don't know how to actually mark this as a draft.
(In any case, merging it is safe, but static builds of aura using the static-haskell-nix machinery will ultimately fail in the final step.)
bb010g
@bb010g
The builds work now!
bb010g
@bb010g
Oh yeah, on binary size:
bb010g ~/.../haskell/aura % ls -lh result/bin/
total 9.3M
-r-xr-xr-x 2 root root 9.3M Dec 31  1969 aura*
Colin Woodbury
@fosskers
hot damn :)
I'll try and get it working on my machine tomorrow.
