Google seems to be the only company that innovates for the open web because the open web of content is their business model. Apple and Microsoft prefer closed eco-systems of apps built with their native technologies. They are both going to continue to drag their feet on any real innovations that don't support their business models.

I was a Microsoft tools and tech focused guy for 25 years, I am not Anti-Microsoft, but I am a pragmatist. I have also picked my own value set, and I believe in the open web, and I no longer support closed eco-systems controlled by the big tech companies.

but you can essentially write an entire framework (painting/layout and all) with asm.js

In FF (which supports ASM.js), there is a few components that work to support ASM.js
One of which is a parser

That takes an AST and executes it
The point of web assembly is to replace the parser
While keeping the engine

@Alxandr Tim Berners-Lee himself recently published he was concerned that apps were going to drive the progress made in the open web into closed eco-systems controlled by Apple, Micrsoft etc. I have to admit I am concerned about the privatization of the Internet.

Mainly cause we saw the same thing on mobile
And they all push back to wanting to do mobile web
'cept the mobiles don't really handle that well yet
Native will always be better
Always have been better
But devs preffer web, cause it's inherently xplat
