Google seems to be the only company that innovates for the open web because the open web of content is their business model. Apple and Microsoft prefer closed eco-systems of apps built with their native technologies. They are both going to continue to drag their feet on any real innovations that don't support their business models.
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
It's the natural evolution of asm.js
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
I hope js as assembly language isn’t temporary.
Chris Beckett
@chrismbeckett
I was a Microsoft tools and tech focused guy for 25 years, I am not Anti-Microsoft, but I am a pragmatist. I have also picked my own value set, and I believe in the open web, and I no longer support closed eco-systems controlled by the big tech companies.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
I want it to succeed badly.
Roland Quast
@rquast
i guess you could just port everything to asm.js and not use native components.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
who the heck wants to be locked into a single language with no choice?
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@chrismbeckett FYI, and I won't be discussing this anymore, but if that was your first message in a forum I managed, I'd kick you out for being a troll.

We've understood you don't like MS.
I'm not trying to get personal, but let's not rage this into a flamewar. Wrong place to discuss it anyways
Chris Beckett
@chrismbeckett
@Alxandr I am NOT Anti-Microsoft!!! But you have to follow the money trail to understand the technology industry.
Luke A. Greenleaf
@gishmel
Roland Quast
@rquast
but you can essentially write an entire framework (painting/layout and all) with asm.js
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@gishmel sure it is. Though they plan to expand it beyond js eventually
@chrismbeckett Hmm, well. Sorry if I misunderstood you then.
Luke A. Greenleaf
@gishmel
no its not if your claim is they eventually compile to Javascript in asm.js then sure thats what they are doing currently
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@gishmel not my claim
So, to explain what I mean:
In FF (which supports ASM.js), there is a few components that work to support ASM.js
One of which is a parser
Chris Beckett
@chrismbeckett
@Alxandr No worries, sorry if I came across like a troll. I regularly participate in Microsoft UX studies here in Seattle where I live, and other Microsoft developer focus groups. I love that they are now releasing their apps on other platforms, etc.
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
Another of which is a the execution engine
Roland Quast
@rquast
heh.. this is funny.. but I received an email from Microsoft today titled "Meet your new favourite browser - Microsoft Edge".
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@chrismbeckett Not in general. Mainly just that last message. Though. It's 5am. I might be overly irritable atm :P
Roland Quast
@rquast
they obviously don't know that I mostly use mac and linux
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@rquast Yeah. So, I tried Edge. Once. xD
Roland Quast
@rquast
hey ... they deserve respect for rebuilding it
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
And then went like "Omg, I'm sorry, please take me back Chrome" :cry:
Roland Quast
@rquast
but their marketing dept... cry
Luke A. Greenleaf
@gishmel
yeah linux is life for me @rquast if only I could get rid of my windows laptop at work I would be a much happier person
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
@gishmel the other part is an engine
That takes an AST and executes it
The point of web assembly is to replace the parser
While keeping the engine
(for now at least)
Chris Beckett
@chrismbeckett
@Alxandr Tim Berners-Lee himself recently published he was concerned that apps were going to drive the progress made in the open web into closed eco-systems controlled by Apple, Micrsoft etc. I have to admit I am concerned about the privatization of the Internet.
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
I'm not really
Mainly cause we saw the same thing on mobile
And they all push back to wanting to do mobile web
'cept the mobiles don't really handle that well yet
Native will always be better
Always have been better
But devs preffer web, cause it's inherently xplat
Chris Beckett
@chrismbeckett
@Alxandr Same argument desktop developers made when the Web was evolving, desktop apps will always be better. And yet, the Web became huge.
Aleksander Heintz
@Alxandr
And so, fancy ux requires native (though web is getting better at that)
Yeah, that was my point
Same thing will probably just happen again
There will be a place for "apps" a good while forward
Cause stuff like offline and others are simply better there still
