you're probably missing the ec2:DescribeInstanceStatus permission on your role
@CallumDenby maybe double check your ~/.aws/config file to make sure there's not something wrong with the default profile, or just move that out of the way to troubleshoot. It's possible the default profile you have set references a role that no longer exists in the target account

@angrychimp it's strange because I have a script that generate multiple instances and let's say from 20 instances created 4 or 5 of them have that warning
and if I create less instances (5 to 10) its working, if I create more than 10 I receive that
Randall Kahler

@marius02 ah, that's a bit different then. if you're not getting this error in the console, then what I'm guessing is happening is that you're unable to describe instances that aren't yet initializing. if I recall there's a limit to the number of instances you can spin up at once - you might be getting that error for instances that haven't actually been provisioned yet.

You can check this by using aws ec2 describe-instances --instance-id <id> --query Reservations[].Instances[].State. If your request to create the instance was successful (and perhaps double check that it was), the given state should let you know what's going on. Once the instance is listed as "starting" you should be able to query for its status.

Hello all!
Wondering if I can list multiple profiles on awscli

What it does:

aws configure list

# Name Value Type Location
# ---- ----- ---- --------
# profile default None None
# access_key <not set> None None
# secret_key <not set> None None
# region eu-west-1 config-file ~/.aws/config

What I want it to do:

aws configure list --all
# Name Value Type Location
# ---- ----- ---- --------
# profile default None None
# access_key <not set> None None
# secret_key <not set> None None
# region eu-west-1 config-file ~/.aws/config

# Name Value Type Location
# ---- ----- ---- --------
# profile profile1 None None
# access_key <not set> None None
# secret_key <not set> None None
# region eu-west-1 config-file ~/.aws/config

# Name Value Type Location
# ---- ----- ---- --------
# profile profile1 None None
# access_key <not set> None None
# secret_key <not set> None None
# region eu-west-1 config-file ~/.aws/config
hello, is there some documentation about the telemetry information aws-cli collects?
Randall Kahler
@hrmnjt there isn't currently anything like that. you could submit an issue on the project, but if you're just listing info like that you can just as easily cat ~/.aws/config
@ulziibay are you talking about usage info? the AWS CLI is really just a fancy wrapper for the boto3 library - as far as I'm aware AWS does not collect usage data at all, beyond what might be collected by general API use. If you're looking for your own info, you can always reference cloudtrail

Hello Does anybody have idea to implement authentication using aws + web Socket
Scott White
The AWS documentation on how to get the latest AMI is inaccurate for Amazon Linux 2
aws ec2 describe-images --owners amazon --filters 'Name=name,Values=amzn2-ami-hvm-2.0.????????-x86_64-gp2' 'Name=state,Values=available' --query 'reverse(sort_by(Images, &CreationDate))[:1].ImageId' --output text
it should return ami-0b69ea66ff7391e80 however the script above returns ami-0b898040803850657 instead

SSM StartSession returns a stream url, is there any documentation on this websocket api?
It returns a TokenValue but doesn't have any documentation on using it

Hello, can I move an aws instance from one region to another without creating it again from scratch?
Lionel T.

Hello, I have an issue with "aws cloudformation deploy"
I used it to create a stack that use a parameter named "MyInstanceType" with a string value t3.small"; when I deploy the stack, everything works fine.

When I change the param's default value with one from SSM parameter store "/MyInstanceType", deploying the stack fails with the following errors :

An error occurred (ValidationError) when calling the CreateChangeSet operation: Unable to fetch parameters ... from parameter store for this account

Any idea ?

Mark Townsend
Hello, Are you using semver for your versioning? Thanks.
Hi, Is there any way to find the Volume detached date and time using aws cli, if not can we add this feature in the new v2.
@all How to terminate a game session on game lift using AWS cli?
Darren Paxton
hi all, tried building the v2 cli using the guide by pulling the v2 repository branch and running the pip install commands but getting a problem with s3transfer compatibility. anyone else seen this?
Ronique Ricketts
I am trying to get a Microservice up and running in ECS but I have a question. Does each service get its own task definition in ECS?
Eric Millinder
@dspaxton I've been struggling with that today. "ERROR: s3transfer 0.3.0 has requirement botocore<2.0.0,>=1.12.36, but you'll have botocore 2.0.0.dev2 which is incompatible." Then when running virtualenv/bin/aws I get 'Requirement.parse('botocore<2.0.0,>=1.12.36'), {'s3transfer'})'. If I run the aws that is in the project root (aws-cli/bin/aws) it runs without checking the requirements.
ha! No one has posted in here lately.

Is anyone aware of a way to find the permitted Filter Keys for any one command? In my case, I'm trying to find the filter Keys for SSM's describe-maintenance-window-schedule
Any idea why I cant find certain aws commands in the cli? Running Amazon linux 2 AMI with aws-cli version 1.16.300 (For reference, trying to use aws efs create-access-point on govcloud) Is it because I need aws-cli version 2?
Satya Kuppam
I made some code changes to the aws-cli. What test suites are available and how do I run them?
Cuong Nguyen
hi, I'm using STS to issue temp access keys for users, but can't find a way to force remove or expire an access key. any idea to do that? currently I can only see there is a button to remove all sessions, I would like to remove determined session only
Hey all, going to attempt to add arm builds to V2. Looks like it should be configurable with the pyinstaller config. Any tips on helping my patch get upstreamed? It's my first time contribution.
Building the awsv2 binary on arm has been such a pain in the neck. I see why nobodies done it. haha
It builds fine - user error.
Hope there's some official builds soon

Any tips for installing on MacOSX Sierra? Python versions are as follows:

$python3 --version
Python 3.7.1
$python --version

OK, got it working, this gist pointed me in the right direction: https://github.com/rajivkanaujia/alphaworks/wiki/Installing-AWS-CLI-via-pip3-and-python3
Does the vli-v2 support mfa?

 this is what happens when i try to run my builds now. I don't know why this is a sudden development, and I haven't been able to figure out why this started happening yet.
Benjamin Kozuch

my requirement.txt has b

and Im getting this message:

awscli 1.17.9 has requirement botocore==1.14.9, but you'll have botocore 1.14.17 which is incompatible.
pendulum 1.4.4 has requirement tzlocal<,>=, but you'll have tzlocal 2.0.0 which is incompatible.

any idea what I need to change?

Patrick Sauerborn

Hey there, I've got a problem that's driving me nuts.
I'm trying to set my configuration for the aws cli but it returns the error "too few arguments".

Specifically I'm talking about the following command:
aws configure set aws_access_key_id $live_id --profile default

The culprit is the damn dollar sign, which leads to the aws cli ignoring everything after it.

James Saryerwinnie
Just to double check, are you use that $live_id is set? What happens if you run echo aws configure set aws_access_key_id $live_id --profile default?

hi all. i am able to run aws configure list and see my s3 buckets, and can run any aws command in my ec2 server via CL. but when i put aws commands into a bash file and execute the file, i get "Unable to located credentials". What am I missing here?
Google results are showing that when I run the script it isn't locating the correct home dir. I'm not understanding how to circumvent this.
hey guys, I am unable to list objects in my bucket on s3 using awscli. Does anyone has idea why? I am using aws s3 ls
It is happening to me today, yesterday it worked fine
got the solution sorry for bothering

When running aws ecr --region $tgtregion create-repository --repository-name $tgtnamespace$repo in a shell script, is there a way to avoid getting the "less" prompt that includes the response of the command?
