    Hi all, curious to see what the upcoming D3 talk will bring, I've been using https://bokeh.org/ so far

    @/all we're running the first technical seminar in 40 minutes: https://www.be-rse.org/seminars/
    Hope to see you all there

    Thanks for the talk Matthias, it was very clear. IMHO D3 is too low level. Compare this to df.plot() with pandas, it's much less code to write. Do you know of any other js lib using d3 in the background but being higher level and requiring less boilerplate code?
    thx

    plotly?
    James Collier
    @MaybeJustJames
    Have you used it @wdecoster ?
    Wouter De Coster
    @wdecoster
    very often
    I've build tools on it, use it for visualizations on say weekly basis
    Wouter De Coster
    @wdecoster
    this is a couple of months old, but some static examples: https://gigabaseorgigabyte.wordpress.com/2020/02/18/methplotlib-examples/
    what I like the most about it is to use it as HTML
    With Dash you can also use the same plots for more interactive dashboards
    the documentation is perhaps overwhelming, but I'm really happy with it

    Looks like we made a good/lucky decision going with Gitter: https://matrix.org/blog/2020/09/30/welcoming-gitter-to-matrix

    Hi all! I am the software engineer of the Nerf-FkLab. My favorite project this day is Falcon an open-source real-time neural data processing. https://falcon-core.readthedocs.io
    By the way, James, I listen some of the changelog podcast this afternoon. Really cool ! Thanks for the sharing.
    James Collier
    @MaybeJustJames
    :+1: No worries! It's a great podcast in general :)

    Apparently DeepMind managed to accurately predict protein structures but aside from the news I don't see many people talking about it, isn't this supposed to be a big thing or have we gotten too spoiled with advancements such as CRISPR :wink: ?
    James Collier
    @MaybeJustJames
    Seems like a very big thing. Though I haven't seen the CASP results. The result in 2018 was already very impressive
    Wouter De Coster
    @wdecoster
    I think the main "problem" with deepmind "solving" protein folding is that they're not releasing any of their methods - and as such not really moving the field forward

    Is it still possible to join the Research Software Developers Day tomorrow? The website says you can still register, but the actual VIB page for the event has "Registration is closed."
    James Collier
    @MaybeJustJames
    @jorisvandenbossche yes absolutely! Sorry, that's a mistake we will correct. To be sure, can you privately send me your email address and I will register you
    James Collier
    @MaybeJustJames
    Registrations are open again. Sorry for the inconvenience

    On January 25, 2021, the newly established International Council of RSE Associations held its first meeting. High on the agenda: Are we going to organize an (Online) International RSE Conference in 2021? The council will introduce itself in a blog post on https://researchsoftware.org/ shortly, so watch out if you are curious to learn more about it. We are represented in the council by BE-RSE members Johan Philips (KU Leuven) and myself.
