Dataspell
@Dataspell
Hello all! I'm glad to meet you, hope I can help you guys out a bit, I know some c# idk what language yall are working in I'm about to check out the project

@fabacab
Hi @Dataspell! Buoy is mostly PHP but there are other related projects in other languages (for instance, @asabine is writing a supporting project in Python). We are not language purists here. :) Also, how'd you find out about us?
Dataspell
@Dataspell
Through tumblr, I commented on a post and was directed here
0xACAB
@fabacab
People are sharing Buoy on Tumblr?
Dataspell
@Dataspell
No not exactly, it was a dialogue on developing an app (which I now know to be Buoy) which I said the concept sounded awesome and I would want to help with it and was subsequently and privately linked here

@fabacab
Oh okay, that's very cool. And of course we are happy to have you here wanting to collaborate. :) You can scroll up a bit to see some chatter about doing so recently. You're welcome to hop in/participate however you like.

@ericblank
i'm learning python right now
then i'm moving into web technologies
any suggestions? people always talk shit about PHP
is ruby or something better? django?
javascript or coffeescript?
0xACAB
@fabacab
There's no practical difference. You should learn whatever language you have the most support to learn. In this room that means PHP and/or JavaScript, or Python.
baffy
@ericblank
i like python so far, i'll just move into django and javascript
i'm using codeacademy
baffy
@ericblank
i can't find any functioning bouy sites

@fabacab
There aren't any public ones that I know of, either.

I have released version 0.3.0 of Buoy. This release ships the SMS/txt broadcast channel and fixes many (a dozen?) minor bugs.
The API docs have been updated, too.

@fabacab
I've been chatting with one of the co-founders of this European group, and I put together this "grant application" (really just a post that might, maybe, possibly, lead to some funding) for Buoy: https://edgeryders.eu/en/buoy-coordinated-crisis-response-and-community-based-mutual-aid So if you wanna talk about Buoy in another space, there's another space to do it.

@nufuturepro
Just to let you guys know, I'm still reading up on things. Little by little. Just trying to see what I would like to work on first.
0xACAB
@fabacab
You can take as much time as you need, @nufuturepro. If asking for input from/conversing with one of us sounds like it would be helpful, you can do that, too.

Ping @nitishnarula, see #150.

@fabacab
Ping @nitishnarula, #151 should fix bug #150. It's running through CI now.

@fabacab
#151 is merged and deployed to staging.

If anyone else would like to help me continue testing the SMS/txt features of Buoy, the easiest way to do so is to send a txt message to gmmxdev@gmail.com (that's right, type that email address instead of a phone number as the recipient for your txt message). In the body of the txt message, say "Testing Buoy SMS from PHONE_COMPANY", where PHONE_COMPANY is the name of the company that you subscribe to, such as "Tracphone" or "Telstra" or "Vodafone" or something like that.
0xACAB
@fabacab
@/all Also, if you know anyone who wants to help test the txt messages, point 'em here. Thanks!

Another way folks who want to can help is to create documentation pages like the new User profile page in the User documentation manual. (It's really just a stand-alone wiki page but we can put it on some Table of Contents-like listing later.)
0xACAB
@fabacab
@/all We finally have a much improved User Manual. Please have a look and feel free to edit/fill in/create any missing pages (red links).

@fabacab
@noflag Thought of you when I wrote this "Finding a Buoy" section.
0xACAB
@fabacab
Okie dokie, I finished up the feature documentation for Crisis Response Teams.
0xACAB
@fabacab
Made good progress documenting the Alerts feature.
0xACAB
@fabacab
All righty, @/all, check out Responding to Buoy alerts in the user guide. It's got annotated screenshots and should help people understand the user flow. Thoughts?

@astridw
hi everyone

@fabacab
Welcome, @astridw ! :)
0xACAB
@fabacab
Okie doke, plenty more headway on feature documentation, now the Incident map is largely documented.
0xACAB
@fabacab
And now Media sharing is documented.
0xACAB
@fabacab
And that completes one of the final basic guides: Using Buoy during an incident. I think this covers the major missing pieces of end-user documentation for Buoy. Our wiki now contains a pretty detailed guide for each of the basic end-user features and an easy way to point-and-click your way through finding out about each one. When people ask you "How do I use Buoy?" your answer can now be a short and sweet, "Read this page: https://github.com/betterangels/buoy/wiki/User-documentation"
0xACAB
@fabacab
Y'know, in case anyone ever asks. :/
Astrid Willis Countee
@astridw
Wow. The guide is very detailed
0xACAB
@fabacab
Yeah, most of it is pretty self-explanatory since it just makes a lot of the interface conventions explicit, but my hope is that the existence of the documentation makes it easier for some people to approach using Buoy and makes the whole thing seem more like it's, y'know, a real thing that people can use if they want to.
If you clicked around a bit you'll no doubt have seen incomplete areas (often marked with a TK-TODO comment) as well as some remaining red links, which indicate missing pages. If you (or anyone) wants to continue improving the documentation, these are obvious places to start doing so.
Astrid Willis Countee
@astridw
Ok great. I would like to Help out with that. It will help me learn the app
0xACAB
@fabacab
Yeah…. I was sort of thorough this time because I was kinda hoping that exact thought would have struck someone in any of the nearly 9? 10 months? that I put off writing these docs. :/ But! There is always more to improve or detail to add and I agree, you're right that it's a good way to help oneself get familiar with the software. :) Let us know if you have any trouble editing wiki pages or need some access.

@fabacab
I rolled up the latest bug fixes for the SMS/txt features into a 0.3.1 point release, published to WordPress.org yesterday.

@meygerjos
I just downgraded from a smartphone to a flip phone, and I was about to text gmmxdev@gmail.com, but my phone apparently doesn't let me type letters in the "to" field (I have a AT&T GoPhone ZTE Z2223). I'll fiddle with it later, but maybe a Google Voice number could be set up that forwards to this address so that basic phones can text it.
0xACAB
@fabacab
@meygerjos Try changing text input method. See page 11 https://www.att.com/support_static_files/manuals/ATT_Z222.pdf
meygerjos
@meygerjos
@meitar Thanks, it worked! I just texted the email
This message was deleted
0xACAB
@fabacab
@meygerjos Cool, I see it. Thanks, that's exactly what I need. Now we have some material from AT&T's gateway so we can test messages sent from AT&T's network.

Hey, I've been helping with the Spanish translation, and I noticed the translator instructions page was kind of not built. I think it would be easily remedied by simply linking to Transifex's getting started page which covers all the goals of the page. Is it cool if I replace the text there with a brief description and the link to Transifex?
