also, BioJS got accepted this year, you can check their ideas at: https://www.biojs.net/gsoc and ask questions at https://gitter.im/biojs/biojs

@bmpvieira makes me wish I was a student. :D

@amanjeev ahahah... well if you manage to get some free time you don't need to be a student to contribute :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Edgar S. Hurtado
@edgarshurtado
Hello everyone! I’m Edgar and I’m a student from Spain. I’m willing to apply to bionode for the GSoC. I’ve been reading the try.bionode docs and I really like the project.
I’ve studied biology and this year I’m finishing a vocational training in Web Development
My goal is to study bioinformatics next year. Besides, this april I’ll start a internship in a research center. In the bioinformatics department, so I’m going to get used to bioinformatics workflows.
Edgar S. Hurtado
@edgarshurtado
If it’s possible I would appreciate any guidance for my apply. I’ve already read the guide for prospective GSoC students and I wanted to ask you something. The 5th point is just if I were proposing my own project, right? Or even though I were applying to the current bionode project idea I would need to provide a project plan?
Julian Mazzitelli
@thejmazz
@edgarshurtado hope you get the position!
Edgar S. Hurtado
@edgarshurtado
Thanks @thejmazz I would really like to work with bionode because I love the idea of using javascript for bioinformatics
Besides I’ve read that prior knowledge of node is not required, so I could learn along with the project. Even though I would learn node before, of course.
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
Wellcome @edgarshurtado ! :) Nice to see you
It's great that you're interested in Bionode
you have to submit a project even if you're going with the proposed idea
"A project plan for the project you are proposing, even if your proposed project is directly based on one of the proposed project ideas for member projects.
if you scroll up a bit, there's some links with more information (Mar 05 15:15), I'll add them to the website
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
knowing JavaScript is a requirement, and knowing Node.js would help a lot since most of the coding will be node
http://nodeschool.io is a good place to start

Hi @bmpvieira thanks for the wellcoming =).

I'm confident with Javascript since I’ve studied it at my vocational training and I’m a member of FreeCodeCamp which teaches full stack web development with JS. Unfortunatelly I didn’t get to the Node section yet. But it’s something that I can solve before the GSoC.

So if I have to submit an idea on my own, I’ll check out the links you told me and I’ll come back later with more questions :smile:

@bmpvieira
sounds great! :+1:
Edgar S. Hurtado
@edgarshurtado
I’ve already read the links but I still feeling a bit lost about how would I break it down into small milestones. This could be because of I haven’t worked with workflow engines before. Where could I get a better idea of what a workflow engine should do? What I know is that they allow users to set some tasks to do, even though they haven’t programming skills.
Edgar S. Hurtado
@edgarshurtado
Ups, i think I have some bad news : requirements for participation. I thought I would be eligible but as I’m not in a University I think I can’t do the GSoC. Anyway I would like to learn and contribute with this project (As I stated before, I really love the idea of using javascript for bioinformatics). So I thought I could contribute to the open issues on the project. Could I?
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
@edgarshurtado that's a pity :( but yes you can still contribute in many ways
have a look at waffle.io/bionode/bionode for all the issues open in all the repos
you can ask questions or let us know how you would like to contribute

hey, if anyone has any remote remote , designer, DevOps or Sysadmin jobs they can post them at http://webwork.io

@thejmazz
Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of a good streaming parser example? Wrote it first with events and so switching out now is stumping me a little. Probably just need a small push and it will all click ;p bionode/bionode-obo#24
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
@thejmazz did you have a look at https://github.com/bionode/bionode-fasta?
Mathias and Max are stream experts, maybe ask them on #dat IRC (gitter: datproject/discussions)
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
but maybe the problem is the wrapping with highlandjs, I remember having some issues with it and ended up not using it. instead and made a quick and dirty module for some stream operations https://github.com/bmpvieira/tool-stream
@/all only 7 days left to submit your Bionode Google Summer of Code project https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/
hamzo123
@hamzo123
hi vieira, i emailed you today regarding my interest in the bionode
I already have a basic knowledge of javascript
I have also the knowledge in biology although i might need some explanation regarding the proposed project
Aminelahlou
@Aminelahlou
Hello everybody! I am a nodeJS developer for a year now but I lack bioinformatics knowledge (I know the basics though : DNA, RNA, proteins etc) if somebody lacks nodejs skills I strongly advise you to go here : http://nodeschool.io/ I am happy to share with you someknowledge about nodejs, (in exchange for bio knowledge!)
Bruno Vieira
@bmpvieira
Hi @hamzo123 you can PM me questions or we can try to meet
Thanks @Aminelahlou for offering some knowledge sharing :) There's still time to apply for GSoC if you're interested. It will require more Node.js skill than Biology, so it could be great for you

Bom dia Bruno
Muito prazer once again, it was nice meeting you yesterday. Thank you once again for greatly informing me about this thrilling project.
@bmpvieira I have been looking around to see where I am supposed to submit a draft, where can I submit a draft proposal?
