@bkaestner
By the way, I just noticed that I've never actually talk about TDD or BDD in the codex (#38). Also, my examples don't provide best practices (#37). Still something to do.
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
not 100% on topic, but I was thinking about populating here; basic questions like "What should be my skill level" or "how can I overcome a problem I am stuck in" would come to my mind, for example, but any feed is welcome

Happy New Year Everyone :smile:
Divyansh Batham
@DivyanshBatham
As a begginer my first opinion on @bkaestner blog is "It's a long and length booklet"
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
Not sure whether that is a good or a bad thing, @DivyanshBatham :D. Also belated happy new year to you.
Oh. I just noticed that there aren't any analytic features on the GH page. So I have no idea how many actually visit the codex.
Divyansh Batham
@DivyanshBatham
I have an idea for increasing the views on codex page. Here it goes "We can add a new button on the sidebar(containing Home | Kata | Discuss | Leaderboard etc. ) which will be a direct link to codex". As I'm not a developer currently I don't know whether that's a 1 day task or 1 week task.. So pardon me if it's a bad idea.
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
There's already a link on the dashboard, see screenshot:
dashboard
The problem is, I don't actually know how many read the codex.
Divyansh Batham
@DivyanshBatham
Oops didn't knew there was a link, since it's been a while since I did something on CW.
Divyansh Batham
@DivyanshBatham
I recently attended a workshop on Web Developement and Cloud Computing and there we were taught about 'Google Analytics' which somewhat does what you want for codex, but since it was not a top notch lecture I'm not sure whether it could be used for a blog page.
Speaking of making CW popular; I can on my level bring several Indian Students on CW but after C or C++ is included on CW. Since in Indian Colleges mostly C and C++ is taught and in 3rd Year Java is introduced. But till then all the potential cw users are grasped by other sites like Codechef and Topcoder. And no student want to start programming on anew site
Divyansh Batham
@DivyanshBatham
Since it's then time for placements and all the students work on improving their personalilty and english speaking(not so much sure about english speaking) they don't want to waste their time on compitive coding websites.

'Google Analytics'

I dislike Google Analytics. I would rather use Piwik, but I don't have a server with a valid SSL certificate for HTTPS at hand. Really need to switch my web hosting provider.

Or just get a vServer.
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
but since it was not a top notch lecture I'm not sure whether it could be used for a blog page.
@DivyanshBatham : Google Analytics It can be used anywhere you can put a <script src=ANALYTICS_URL></script> and the user can connect to GA (it doesn't work for internal sites for example). Also, the user most not block scripts from GA.
(Codewars uses Google Analytics, for example)
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
Hm, maybe I should switch to Sphinx instead of Pandoc: https://bkaestner.github.io/codewars-rules/demo/
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
why not considering GA for such a specific task, senpai?
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
While GA provides a great service, it's not encouraged by privacy advocates, at least in Germany, @GiacomoSorbi. See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics#Privacy_issues. I'd rather use Piwik or similar. (Also, GA is blocked in my network)
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
I know about privacy issues, but given the service offered, to me it is a fair price to pay (personal opinion of course); never heard of piwik, will look into it :+1:
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
Finally took some time to fix some long-standing issues. Still not sure how to incorporate @danielpclark's recommendations on Ruby (#8).

@13ROY
Hi all, I am new to codewars so I don't really know where I should be asking/reporting this, does anyone know if the 'type' command in python is supposed to work as it isn't for me?
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
That has been in Python since version 2.2, see https://docs.python.org/2/library/functions.html#type
13ROY
@13ROY
Hi @bkaestner, yes I understand it is within the python package but if I try to print the type of any value to the console within the codewars interface I get what looks like an empty line, am U doing anything wrong? E.g print type(value)
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
in python you get to return the class a variable belongs to, so basically type("pippi")==str
try to print enclosing stuff inside repr() when nothing comes out
13ROY
@13ROY
Ok thank you @GiacomoSorbi , the repr() method did not make the variable class appear, however the type functionality does work when using it as you showed above.

Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
Hm. I think I've never said that one should also provide some random tests to the user.
Or did I? @/all
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
I would say you did, not 100% sure, though
Benjamin Kästner

New maintainer/author needed: #41.
Donald Sebastian Leung
@DonaldKellett
@bkaestner may I take part in maintaining the Codex?
But before I take part in maintaining the Codex I would like some instructions as to what to maintain and how. Thanks :smile:
Giacomo Sorbi
@GiacomoSorbi
also: @bkaestner, could this mean that you might be a bit more free, if I ever get some gig that requires extra collaborators?
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
@DonaldKellett I will add details tomorrow in the issue

Just providing some space between old discussions and (possible) new ones.
SO's chat has a nice solution for that.

Hehe :smile:
How are you doing @bkaestner ?
Benjamin Kästner
@bkaestner
Overall, I'm fine. How you're doing?
