Awesome. Akuna Capital LLC. It's an options trading company. I'll be working on their internal APIs. Do you like what you are doing at work, or has it made you miss school? If you don't mind my asking.

That’s cool! Finance is interesting as you get to work with very strict latency requirements (especially if you’re in high frequency trading). I hope you’ll like it! As for me, I like what I’m doing at work so far. It’s very different from my work on Hana, as would be any “real world” work, but I like it. And I get to learn a lot about “real world” programming, both the good and the bad parts of it.

I'm definitely excited about having to deal with the runtime performance constraints. I'm told that I can push modern compiler adoption as well (they are still on GCC 4.7.4). I'm glad you're liking it! My least favorite thing about "real world" programming in my experience is that I lean heavily toward the perfectionism/purism side of the developer spectrum, whereas pragmatism and "just make it work" attitudes are often preferred when deadlines and budgets are in play.

@badair I guess it’s all about reaching a reasonable balance where you’re productive while not producing shitty code. After all, shitty code does not pay off in the mid/long term.

@ricejasonf Thanks man!

@ldionne Yep, definitely.

Did either of you negotiate time-off from work to attend conferences? I decided against it, but I might bring it up closer to the time of the conference. I plan to be at C++Now next year, but I may end up taking some vacation days to attend.

That was seriously a ton of fun for me.

A9 has a policy where you can usually attend up to 2 conferences a year, from what I’ve heard. So I didn’t have to negotiate anything really.
It would be nice to see you again at C++Now next year!

Ah, that's really cool. Maybe next year I'll have something worth submitting!
