Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
so, this is the only place where I hear people talk about ML, is it still used? What kind of apps can you write with this language?
Gavin King
@gavinking
but I think at that stage I already had the notion that they would be lazy
@bjansen sadly ML has kind of been replaced by Haskell
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
But the ML type system lives on!
Gavin King
@gavinking
but, OTOH, Haskell is a kind of ML
yes
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
even in Ceylon, a little bit?!
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
Genesis 1:27, so @gavinking created streams in his own image: lazy
Gavin King
@gavinking
@renatoathaydes rrrm not really no
it’s an inspiration for our type system, certainly
I’m inclined to think our streams more come from Lisp
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
is ocaml a variant of ML?
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
it has ML in its name!
Gavin King
@gavinking
@bjansen yes OCaml is an ML
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
ok
Lucas Werkmeister
@lucaswerkmeister
so does HTML
Gavin King
@gavinking
the “ml” is “ML"
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
haha
Gavin King
@gavinking
@lucaswerkmeister LOL
hahahahaha
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
I remember a TA using ocaml, it looked weird when I read it
lucaswerkmeister @lucaswerkmeister wonders if Microsoft ever made a Lisp
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
compared to C/Java
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
OCaml is totally weird
Gavin King
@gavinking
@bjansen it has a sort of intimidating syntax — but it’s a very cool lang
F# is a better OCaml
try that
I think our streams come ultimately from lisp
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
is F# a Microsoft thing?
Gavin King
@gavinking
yep it is a CLR lang
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
from the .NET world
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
ok
Gavin King
@gavinking
very nice functional lang
i really dig it
it’s not as powerful as real OCaml
but it’s a bit easier on the eyes IMO
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
except you need a windows box and visual studio, I guess?
Gavin King
@gavinking
not sure I only read a book about it, I never actually used it
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
now that .NET runs on all platforms, I doubt you need windows for F# development.
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
you need it if you want a good IDE I think
otherwise you're stuck with xamarin and mono
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
ah, don't know about that.
Bastien Jansen
@bjansen
although I haven't used xamarin, it might be a good IDE too
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
Ah, nice...
Gavin King
@gavinking
@renatoathaydes you’re sending some traffic our way right now :)
Renato Athaydes
@renatoathaydes
oh, great to know!
the comparisons with Kotlin/Scala already started on Reddit! How predictable.
Gavin King
@gavinking
yes, these Kotlin fans are quite enthusiastic about posting that stuff on every one of our threads
