just a question, how is remote participation organized?

Thanks for starting that discussion. I'll send out a logistics e-mail today but added the details to the wiki (https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Codefest_Winter_2018#Logistics). We'll have an open zoom hangout throughout the day and will actively discuss with remote folks during the organizational times (~9, 12:30, 5:30 EST).
We'll announce on Gitter when those are coming up to keep everyone synchronized. We can schedule individual sessions via Google Hangouts or appear.in for smaller group meetings as remote participants work with a local group.
Let me know if there's anything else we can do to make this easy for remote participants.

Yeah well in my case due to different timezone and healthy work-life balance we'll just join the Thursday morning session! Maybe one of the others from home. I think the biggest difference of remote is that it's harder to find the fellow participants for the smaller groups!

Makes sense, I know how hard time zones are. That is helpful feedback, we'll make sure to get everyone remote associated with a smaller group during the organization session. Please feel free to speak up here during the event if I can help connect anyone remote to local.
Also for local folks, we'll have two different venues for the two days. Both are in the Longwood area right near each other but slightly different directions. I added all the details to the logistics page: https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Codefest_Winter_2018#Logistics
