I was imagining a system tray icon/app that periodically checks for package updates and notifies user via popup or windows 10 action center. thoughts?

something like this?
-> not quite finished yet should be online mid october!
Gary Ewan Park
@gep13
@mwallner is that work that you are doing on ChocolateyGUI or another application?
Manfred Wallner
@mwallner
@gep13 it's called 'ChocoUpgradeNotifier' -> a seperate application that can trigger ChocolateyGUI or the commandline (if ChocolateyGUI is not installed)
@gep13 why? - would you be interested in integrating it into ChocolateyGUI?
Stephen Price
@lythix
@mwallner glad I asked. Exactly like that. Why could I not find it when I searched, is it a private repo perhaps?
Manfred Wallner
@mwallner
@Lythix kind of - I'm afraid you can't get it until I strip company specific data from it :smile: - as I said it'll probably be online next month, but I'll push it as soon as possible!
Stephen Price
@lythix
My idea was to use something like oneget to query all of the install vectors for collecting your normal install list, and either sharing it with your peers, as well as using this list to pave a new machine. Chocolatey is just the start. Hence my interest to use something like Oneget (package manager manager)
is it a product or is it designed to be open source eventually?
Manfred Wallner
@mwallner
definitely not a product, probably apache2 .. not sure yet
Stephen Price
@lythix
@mwallner my idea was born at a startup weekend, but was never worked on. Kind of "what's in my toolbox". Inspired by Scott Hanselman's Ulitmate tool list he updates every couple of years.
with a pro app that can both collect data on existing machine, to seed your share list, as well as be used when paving your new machine. Ie install it, and it tells you what you usually install.
but your notifier sounds like its a good start.

@lythix
thats the one.
his list is a manually curated list. My idea what to bring that idea to all devs/designers
so everyone can share their favourite tool list.
great way to discover new tools etc
and pave a new machine :)

There's a problem in installing chocolatey in Win 10 , I've tried all the installation methods mentioned in the https://chocoalatey.org page, the installation error is Exception calling "DownloadString" with "1" argument(s): "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden."

@Vinay26k please don't add the same message to every chocolatey room, there really is no need.
Your question is best asked in the chocolatey/choco room.

@RianM
Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a suggestion made on the Chocolatey google group that was recommended to be made on the ChocolateyGui google group.
Labelled: "Suggestion for Chocolatey GUI: Show Chocolatey counterparts to already installed software"
Gary Ewan Park
@gep13
@RianM can't say I have seen that suggestion, no.
do you have a link?
Gary Ewan Park
@gep13
ah, I have a vauge recollection of it, however, I don't think it was discussed further
RianM
@RianM
I'm maintaining some pcs for friend and this morning I thought that such functionality would be useful, so naturally i went out to go see if anyone has done it already.
Glad to see someone mentioned the suggestion but it's a shame to hear it wasn't discussed further
Would be neat =D
dragon788
@dragon788
@RianM using http://alternativeto.net would be one option, though sometimes they have suggestions that aren't always relevant (eg OSX software suggested if you are on Windows)
sometimes just searching the tags works, though that can be hit or miss since not every author adds tags and there isn't really a good way to do it from the feed
Manfred Wallner
@mwallner
hey @RichiCoder1 - any ideas how long till feature/Framework_Overhaul gets merged back to develop?
dragon788
@dragon788
@RianM Also, if you upgrade to Chocolatey Professional it can actually "take over" any software that has a Chocolatey installer and allow you to manage it through the choco commands. https://chocolatey.org/docs/features-synchronize https://chocolatey.org/compare
Gary Ewan Park
@gep13
@mwallner it is on my list of things to do. I have seen the PR's that you have been raising on the repo, and I want to get to them as well. Just need to check a few other things off my todo list first, and then I will be able to focus again on ChocolateyGUI
Pascal Berger
@pascalberger
Are packages downloaded with Install-ChocolateyVsixPackage packed?
Gary Ewan Park
@gep13
@pascalberger sorry, not sure I follow what you mean. Can you elaborate?
Pascal Berger
@pascalberger
I've the strange issue that asssuming VsixUrl = "https://devexpress.gallerycdn.vsassets.io/extensions/devexpress/coderushforroslyn/16.1.9/1479316540606/163212/20/DevExpress.CodeRush.Roslyn-16.1.9.vsix" I end with a zip file in the temp directory
The zip file contains the actual vsix file
Resulting in failing checksum validation
