right. It seems to have downloaded the main and dail cvd files. I see a warning calamd was not notified...

I'll test it in a minute. Is the method sudo freshclam -v the way I must use each time I need to update the sig files. I assume that v is for verbose
what about that warning

hello
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Sorry I had to run. Yes -v is verbose; I thought it would be good to use in case there are errors.
You typically only use clamd if you have a mail server, so I wouldn't worry about it

@ttsrg
Hello. ClamTK(5.25) doesn't show a window with results(after scaning), I see only window - "possible threats found" and I can't do anything with viruses (in Debian 9 is everything ok) and ClamTK-gnome doesn't show a logo in Nautilus before the field - "Scan for threats...". These problems are in ubuntu 18.04. What I should to do to resolve these problems?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
This was reported in dave-theunsub/clamtk#99 as well, but I didn't receive followup. Can you check it out and run "clamtk" as directed on that link?

@LanderSage
With ClamTK running, is ClamAV monitoring activity in real time?
Dave M
@dave_m_gitlab
@LanderSage , No, ClamTk/ClamAV do not, by themselves, run in real time. They are strictly on-demand.
LanderSage
@LanderSage
Thanks - I figured out how to "auto-run" clamscan each time I sign in, so all is well. Merry Christmas!

@nkatsarakis_twitter Hi, can you give more details please? What happens when you click History/Ιστορικό ?
@gvozd777_twitter Hi, have you tried getting an updated copy from https://gitlab.com/dave_m/clamtk/-/wikis/Home ? Click on Downloads. Let me know if you have further questions.

@nkatsarakis_twitter Hi, Did you try the Ιστορικό (History) button? Or is it not showing up at all?

Thank you for your Clamtk project, I appreciate the effort you have dedicated to this in favor of those of us who started in Linux. I would like to be allowed to give you a recommendation.

  • .- Add options to select the files in the results window.
  • .- It should be possible to select all, deselect or select only some.
  • .- Also be able to apply different actions for those selected (remove, clean, quarantine).

I wish you many success and prosperity in your projects. I am using version 5.27

I know it was my fault to get infected :) but scanning my old windows partition I had to eliminate almost 400 viruses one by one.
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Hi @justojav_twitter , Thanks for the suggestion. It's been brought up before. There used to be "delete all" options, but it can be dangerous to do that, due to false positives or that something gets "detected" as a potentially unwanted app (PUA)... It's still possible to be brought back though. Also, please keep in mind I don't test clamtk on Windows. If you're still interested in using the ClamAV engine, I would use clamwin or something that is tested on Windows. ClamTk is only tested on Linux right now.
RobSkipper
@RobSkipper
Hello, thank you so much for your efforts to build an effective antivirus tool under Linux, I appreciate very much. I used to run Antergos which is discontinued now, so I switched to MX Linux which works well too. I used to manually check for updates (freshclam), because even after reading dozens of comments on how to update Clamav I never understood how that works. So I apologize in advance for taking your time with 3 questions: 1) When ClamTK says "New update available", is that a new version of the app or of the virus database, or of ClamTK? 2) How do I apply this update? 3) I read that Clamav "only" scans for Windows viruses. Which doesn't make much sense to me. Clamav scans for ALL infections on my laptop/desktop, right?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Hi @RobSkipper ,
A new update means the clamtk program itself has an update. You can find that here: https://gitlab.com/dave_m/clamtk/-/wikis/Home or when your distro releases an update for it. You should be able to just double-click it. Let me know if you have further questions. Also, you're right - I don't recommend scanning your entire drive with it. Tools like rkhunter or chkrootkit are better suited for that. Whether for Linux or Windows, antivirus is not the end all, be
all for security. It's ONE part of a security plan. So ensure you have a firewall going, use tools like rkhunter and those that check your status, and apply updates.
RobSkipper
@RobSkipper
Hi Dave, and thx so much, that was easy. I have been well protected for years, long ago under Windows with an antivirus, Malwarebytes + their Rootkit detector, and Spywareblaster , since then with ClamAV, Maldet (under antergos) rkhunter and a VPN. The thing about ClamAV that I read was: ClamAV only detects viruses that came in from a Windows environment. Meaning: through email or other "contacts" with an infested third-party Windows system. Meaning: it does not detect viruses within a Linux system or coming from an infested Linux system. Which sounds rather incoherent to me. An antivirus detects viruses from any OS, correct? Thx again for your precious help.
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Hi @RobSkipper , Not true about ClamAV. To see it for yourself, open a terminal window and type sigtool -l |grep -i linux. Good to hear that you take security seriously regardless of the platform.

Hello guys, I have a question. On my clamtk gui, it says it has an update available at the bottom. Does that mean I downloaded an older version from the repository and there is a new version available? Or, does it mean that it needs to update the scanner?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
@tsmith2020_gitlab Hi Tony, it means there is a GUI update. You can wait for your distribution to release it, or get it here: https://gitlab.com/dave_m/clamtk/-/wikis/Home . You're in luck - 6.03 was just released.
Harley99
@Harley99
Sorry if not in right room? I'm new to this and have a question on ClamTK when I scan a file it says No virus ...but then it saying 0 files scanned? Do I need a white list? and if So where do I find it?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Hi @Harley99 , it could be that for some reason you don't have signatures or you tried to scan a directory without recursive scanning enabled. Check your preferences to see if it is enabled. Let me know if that helps.
Harley99
@Harley99
thanks for your reply. I have recursive enabled already. So it must be signatures? How do i check to see if I have them or where to get them?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Click on the Update button; you should see how many signatures you have there.
Harley99
@Harley99
I have 0 ........is there a list i can get some where? or what to do next?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
You can go to Update Assistant and select the choice for updating signatures. You can update them manually in the Update area. What distro are you using? I'm a little surprised it is installed without signatures; that generally shouldn't happen.
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
If you're updating manually, we can save some time and just download the sigs like this: Open a terminal window and type
Harley99
@Harley99
ok that worked :) I want to to thank you for all the help on this. I guess only question I have left on this is this a virus scan only or will it do Malware and other stuff?
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
It will do whatever it has signatures for. It covers a wide variety of types of malware.
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
@Harley99 , can you tell me what distro you're using? Also, how did you install it (e.g., from the repos, the website, ...)? Just to see if there's something to prevent this happening again.
Harley99
@Harley99
Awesome on the signatures...I am using Mint distro and I'v installed it from website. https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/clamtk

Hi!, I infected by Ransomware virus MAAS. Could clamtk recovers those files?
Kiran Landge
@KiranLa34761848_twitter
I have scanned MAAS infected files with ClamTk, But ClamTk shows message no threats found!
Dave M
@dave-theunsub
Hi @KiranLa34761848_twitter , it could be that there are no signatures for it. If you have the malicious files, please upload them to https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/search . Thank you!
