The Eudyptula Challenge, programming exercises for the linux kernel sounds interesting. All communication done via email, and HTML formatted email will be rejected.
Hey all, thanks to those who coached today and @barisbalic for hosting us. I wonder if there is anything I/we can do to get the chat going here. Do you feel that a more private channel would be better? Also, it would be great if you can encourage the people you are coaching to join the channel.

@barisbalic
I was wondering if anyone had today, I think that's a good idea. Also, glad to help!

@BRMatt
Is there a reason for separate gh-pages/master branches?
Despo Pentara
@despo
@BRMatt not really, i've been meaning to kill master but never got around to doing it. Are you volunteering?
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
Is it a Jekyll site?
Despo Pentara
@despo
yes, just one of the default gh-pages setups with some tweaks to get pygments working
Nayeem Syed
@developerinlondon
any devops here?
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
No but whats the problem?
@despo / @BRMatt which repo were you talking about sorry
Nayeem Syed
@developerinlondon
@barisbalic just trying to figure out a good deployment strategy. whether to tag when pushing to UAT or tag when pushing to production
using gitchangelog to create changelog files to send off to management
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
We tag when pushing to production
Your management wants to see changelogs?
Sorry I read 'diffs' when you said changelogs, do you mean actual changelogs?
_
Nayeem Syed
@developerinlondon
it woud be good to send some kind of a release document when we push to live, so they see whats going on
with gitchangelog u can make changelogs that are aimed at management/testers/developers etc
and just tag the commit messages properly when you commit changes
and it also takes care of putting a version number on top based on the version tag
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
Might be a nice practice but I think if management here were concerned with that level of detail I'd be an unhappy developer.
Nayeem Syed
@developerinlondon
i feel happier to keep them in the loop instead of in complete darkness
they know i am doing something and their money is being used well
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
I didn't say you should keep them in the dark either, but this would be more of a debate, I think this channel is more for the tutorials/support of codebar
Despo Pentara
@despo
@developerinlondon I'm not sure this is the right place for this questions. codebar is beginners friend, about helping people new to programming. I'm not sure if someone can suggest a better place for continuing this discussion maybe?

@barisbalic
IRC?
Despo Pentara
@despo
Hey all, I noticed that some of the student feedback on yesterday's session mentioning a lot of time being spent on setting up envirnoments
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
PUPPET ALL THE THINGS!
Despo Pentara
@despo
I don't know if you missed it, however in the first Ruby tutorial we encourage use of nitrous.io - looking at it, it maybe should be highlighted more
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
I think for Nodebots events we're going to create some liveboot USB sticks
Despo Pentara
@despo
@barisbalic haha.
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
But that's not 40 people!
Despo Pentara
@despo
Oh.. that might be an idea, however, money, time, resources...
nitrous is just ready to use and we do tend to have descent internet
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
Sure, I'm a nitrous advocate too
Despo Pentara
@despo
It saves people from being frustrated and having someone else doing things on their machine for an hour or more. Also, I dont think having Ruby setup is essential to get started; maybe after getting a feel for it, they will opt for doing more JS instead - or Python. You never know.
If anyone has any suggestions on other alternatives, we can also link/mention those.

@BRMatt
@barisbalic Just meant an IRC channel as a better place to talk about the work stuff
