Despo Pentara
@despo
but we can pick up this discussion again in the next meeting, which will be on the 26th. I will send out the link to it later.
Alex Pounds
@creature
I don't have strong feelings in the Atom vs Sublime discussion. :) I just don't think that stuff like Vim and Emacs is the way to go. :)
Despo Pentara
@despo
@creature of course! We are teaching programming not typing or vim :P
so emacs and vim are a definitely no for suggesting to students.
*definite
Despo Pentara
@despo
Is anyone up for doing some private paid one-to-one sessions? There is a student who needs help but doesnt fit our target group and his focus is on understanding TDD and other concepts who are a lot more advanced that what we are focusing on.
Alex Pounds
@creature
Did he have a price & location in mind?
Despo Pentara
@despo
No, but can I get back to you on that?
Alex Pounds
@creature
Sure.
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
I think it's a hard sell on vim/emacs, but the positives are: available practically everywhere, including some random box your boss set up in 1991 in the corner of the office, emacs uses fairly common (unixy) bindings for lots of actions, both encourage typing practice and touch-typing which I believe to be reasonably important. But I do understand any hesitance
Despo Pentara
@despo
we have had some people trying to use vim when we first started, it really didnt work out well as all their mental effort was going into understanding vim.
Daniel Barber
@danbee
@barisbalic If you want available everywhere, why not nano/pico? ;)
I have to agree with @despo. Not worth trying to teach vim/emacs at the same time as coding.
And I say that as a vim user.
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
I agree, was just playing devils advocate
Daniel Barber
@danbee
Fair enough

How do I list as attending the wednesday workshop? When I click the email invite then click 'attend', it just puts me back on the same page
Alexander Jahraus
@fanaugen
It might be because the Wednesday workshop is now fully booked. When I try to attend now, the following message appears above the hero image: "Unfortunately there are no more spaces left :(. If you would like to join our waiting list send us an email at london@codebar.io"
Andrew McDonough
@andrewmcdonough
Unfortunately the capacity is limited by the sizes of the office that currently host. If anybody knows of bigger spaces that would accommodate, I'm sure @despo would love to hear from you.
In other Codebar news, for those who didn't make it, Rosa did an awesome job representing Codebar at LRUG this evening. Her talk should be up on the Skillsmatter website soon.
Rosa Fox
@Rosa-Fox
Thanks! :)
Ann Danylkiw
@annlytical
there's no upcoming Brighton event scheduled -- will there be one?
Rosa Fox
@Rosa-Fox
the next one is on Tuesday 22nd at Ideal Networks in Kemp Town, I will put it up on the website and also send out the invitations tonight, sorry for the delay
Ann Danylkiw
@annlytical
oh, no! don't apologise! I was just worried for a second that you decided there weren't enough people coming to continue holding the events in Brighton. Good to know that's not the case :-)
Despo Pentara
@despo
@all is anyone up for working on this? https://github.com/codebar/tutorials/issues/99#issuecomment-49043807 @jkbits1 ?
or more generally, there are a couple of issues that I opened after the meeting we had last month to discuss missing tutorials and courses. If you think/have the time to pick up one it would be great. The format should be similar to other tutorials, following a learn by doing style. https://github.com/codebar/tutorials/issues?state=open
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
@despo, I'm happy to take a look at this issue. I'll try out installing the gSchool tables in sqlite, and create the answers to some of the exercises. I can create some headers for a tutorial, and write some instructions, but I'll welcome some assistance in making the text sound as friendly and interesting as the existing codebar tutorials!

@vbence86
Hey guys, I'm new here. I'd like to attend the next event as a coach, but I've had a slight concerns. I've worked as a developer in London for a year or so, therefore I'm not really confided about if my skills in the language would be enough to lead other person towards improving her skills. I've been programming for almost 20 years, so I'm merely worrying about my English. But, I must say that I have a huge motivation to help other people to get better at programming. What are your thoughts on this?
Alexander Jahraus
@fanaugen
@vbence86 judging from your message your English is just fine :) And if you have been programming for 20 years I’m sure you have plenty of knowledge to share. Many of the codebar students have just a little coding experience or even none at all: I’ve done the introduction to HTML a few times already. Just register as a coach, wait for the invitation to one of the events, come along and see whether you like it.

@helveticafire hi
Despo Pentara
@despo
@vbence86 agree with what @fanaugen said. If you want to just come to one of the workshops and see how things are first, you are also more than welcome.
Bence Varga
@vbence86
Thanks guys for the encouragement, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.

No it doesn't work for me yet :-) But thanks for checking
Despo Pentara
@despo
