just writing future ones?
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Oh, now that I've seen the link I see it fills up pretty quickly.. so just gotta wait for a better chance
Alexander Jahraus
@fanaugen
Sorry guys, can no longer attend tomorrow – I see that there’s less than two students per coach anyway, so you’ll be fine without me :)
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Wish I could go... but I understand this waiting list has maybe 20 before me...
Despo Pentara
@despo
There were 2 coaches and 20 students on the waiting list last I checked. @fanaugen if you change your RSVP your spot should be given to the next person waiting.
@knuxus is it as a coach that you want to attend? The waiting list for coaches is never that long (just checked again, there are 3 people now, and another one was already allocated a spot)
Despo Pentara
@despo
@knuxus sorry I missed the previous messages. You should definitely coach! Invitations go out on Wednesday night usually, so if you respond by Thursday morning, or even Friday (for the coach invitations) you should get a spot. The tutorials are all open source at github.com/codebar/tutorials so you can improve things, pick up existing issues or if you have any suggestions about missing tutorials you are more than welcome to do one. Pretty sure I have a brief guide on taht somewhere, just need to find it. :)
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Thansk for reaching out @despo , i'll see to it

Coaches coming to London tonight: do any of you have a laptop that a student can use?
Despo Pentara
@despo
@creature I will bring one spare, hopefully we should be able to get a couple more.
Alex Pounds
@creature
Super!
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
Hi everybody. I've signed up as a new coach at codebar. I was working through the JS tutorials and I thought that the AJAX Part 2 would be a good place to introduce functions in JS as first class entities and some basic information hiding techniques using closures. Thoughts? Comments? Thanks.
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
njacobs5074: I think rather than introduce them there they might be better suited to their own tutorial, then perhaps an AJAX part 2 revisited, with new technique applied.
njacobs5074: pretty big opinions seeing as I haven't done any work toward it :P
John
@artworkjpm
Am I being silly here but when I try to download the files for the javascript tutorial here http://tutorials.codebar.io/js/lesson2/tutorial.html the download file is unreadable as its a strange compressed one, not a regular zip file?
Baris Balic
@barisbalic
artworkjpm: are you using windows?
David Miller
@Orangetronic
It's compressed with a utility called gzip. If you're on a windows system, you'll need an archive facility like Power Archiver or Winzip to extract it.
John
@artworkjpm
oh I just downloaded a disgusting license heavy winzip to get these files... :S
Alex Pounds
@creature
@njacobs5074: I agree with Baris. Students often find it really hard to get their heads around AJAX, so I'd expect first-class functions & closures to be a total brainmelt there. And you could definitely get an hour's tutorial out of them alone...
David Miller
@Orangetronic
@artworkjpm :worried: I wonder if there's a better Windows way to deal with gzip… I know Winzip is pretty dire…
Alex Pounds
@creature
We recommend 7-zip in the getting started guide, but I don't know if that's "adequate" or "actually good".
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
@creature @barisbalic I do see your respective points about having a "redux" with closures & functions and then the overloading concern. I'll hold onto this thought for now because obviously you want to introduce these more advanced concepts at the right juncture. Thanks for your feedback.
David Miller
@Orangetronic
@creature, it's open source… so it'll be less bloatware-y than winzip :)
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
7-zip aways feels a bit unintuitive, but it works fine on Windows
It would be really nice to have a tutorial on closures to add to the other tutorials
Alex Pounds
@creature
@njacobs5074: I think having a tutorial on it is a really good idea, though! If it's something you're interested in, I'd say have a crack at writing one and send a pull request. :)
And I'm sure we can pair you up with a student at Codebar so you can get some live feedback on it.
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
@creature: Challenge accepted. I'll give it a stab. :)
Andrew Betts
@triblondon
Just signed up as a coach and got my first invite to the event at pivotal on the 14th. Is it dog friendly?
Alexander Jahraus
@fanaugen

@triblondon not sure, but tweet your question to @nodunayo, our host at Pivotal Labs, she’ll be able to help.

Also some people (like myself) have dog allergies, and the room at the Pivotal Labs offices is rather small, but I guess sitting far away from the dog should not be a problem :)

Kriszta Matyi
@matyikriszta
@triblondon I asked Nadia, our host at Pivotal Labs, and the office is unfortunately not dog friendly. Hopefully you can still make it to the workshop!
Andrew Betts
@triblondon
OK, thanks folks. It's not a problem, I'd be sad if I arrived to find you had a whole menagerie and I had left Shadow at home.
Jarkyn
@indykid
@matyikriszta how do i switch from being a student to being a coach...
Kriszta Matyi
@matyikriszta
@indykid subscribe to the London Coaches group and unsubscribe from the London Students group. You should start getting invitations for coaches :)
Tomáš Fejfar
@tomasfejfar
Hi, I subscribed to Cambridge group as coach. I am still not sure though how much knowledge am I supposed to have. I've been developing PHP web apps for 9 years now. I think I have enough experience to guide anyone through the first tutorials except the Ruby one. Do you think that's a problem? I could go thŕough the Ruby tutorial and learn it, but there is no chance that I will have answers to every problem the students may have.
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
@tomasfejfar As a coach at the London codebar group, most coaches only coach some of the tutorials, so it's not necessary to know everything. Many students have little experience, so the role of coaches is to be part of a supportive environment, just as much as answering questions. Have a good time coaching!
Tomáš Fejfar
@tomasfejfar
Happy to hear that! :) I'm looking forward to it.
Alex Pounds
@creature
@tomasfejfar Another thing is: saying "I don't know either. How could we find out?" is usually a good opportunity for teaching - both you and the student learns something. :) Stuff like "How do I answer my own questions?" and "How do I figure out if this StackOverflow answer applies to me?" is a skill that isn't covered in the tutorials, but is super-useful.
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
@creature Really good point about "how do we find that out?" I think it's really important to get the students to understand that while there are certain things you need to know cold as a developer, you don't have to memorize every last parameter of every API call.
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
hey @despo or @creature , a friend of mine just signed up for codebar and says he's still havent recieved a confirmation email or something, is that possible , his github name is goncalosm...
cheers
Alex Pounds
@creature
@knuxus I can see in the admin interface that he's signed up OK as a London student - I guess that's what he was aiming for? We don't send confirmation emails AFAIK but he should have got a general welcome email. This week's workshop is pretty full, but he should now have an invite that will let him join the waiting list.
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Thanks @creature he's got it
Alex Pounds
@creature
London coaches coming tonight: do any of you have a laptop that a student could use?
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Yeah @creature of course...
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
What is the process for converting the .md files into HTML content? Thanks!
Shahmir Javaid
@shahmirj
@njacobs5074 there are many markdown converted libraries
what language are you after?
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
Ah no, I meant the codebar tutorials.
