@Orangetronic
@creature, it's open source… so it'll be less bloatware-y than winzip :)
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
7-zip aways feels a bit unintuitive, but it works fine on Windows
It would be really nice to have a tutorial on closures to add to the other tutorials
Alex Pounds
@creature
@njacobs5074: I think having a tutorial on it is a really good idea, though! If it's something you're interested in, I'd say have a crack at writing one and send a pull request. :)
And I'm sure we can pair you up with a student at Codebar so you can get some live feedback on it.
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
@creature: Challenge accepted. I'll give it a stab. :)
Andrew Betts
@triblondon
Just signed up as a coach and got my first invite to the event at pivotal on the 14th. Is it dog friendly?
Alex Jahraus
@fanaugen

@triblondon not sure, but tweet your question to @nodunayo, our host at Pivotal Labs, she’ll be able to help.

Also some people (like myself) have dog allergies, and the room at the Pivotal Labs offices is rather small, but I guess sitting far away from the dog should not be a problem :)

Kriszta Matyi
@matyikriszta
@triblondon I asked Nadia, our host at Pivotal Labs, and the office is unfortunately not dog friendly. Hopefully you can still make it to the workshop!
Andrew Betts
@triblondon
OK, thanks folks. It's not a problem, I'd be sad if I arrived to find you had a whole menagerie and I had left Shadow at home.
Jarkyn
@indykid
@matyikriszta how do i switch from being a student to being a coach...
Kriszta Matyi
@matyikriszta
@indykid subscribe to the London Coaches group and unsubscribe from the London Students group. You should start getting invitations for coaches :)
Tomáš Fejfar
@tomasfejfar
Hi, I subscribed to Cambridge group as coach. I am still not sure though how much knowledge am I supposed to have. I've been developing PHP web apps for 9 years now. I think I have enough experience to guide anyone through the first tutorials except the Ruby one. Do you think that's a problem? I could go thŕough the Ruby tutorial and learn it, but there is no chance that I will have answers to every problem the students may have.
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
@tomasfejfar As a coach at the London codebar group, most coaches only coach some of the tutorials, so it's not necessary to know everything. Many students have little experience, so the role of coaches is to be part of a supportive environment, just as much as answering questions. Have a good time coaching!
Tomáš Fejfar
@tomasfejfar
Happy to hear that! :) I'm looking forward to it.
Alex Pounds
@creature
@tomasfejfar Another thing is: saying "I don't know either. How could we find out?" is usually a good opportunity for teaching - both you and the student learns something. :) Stuff like "How do I answer my own questions?" and "How do I figure out if this StackOverflow answer applies to me?" is a skill that isn't covered in the tutorials, but is super-useful.
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
@creature Really good point about "how do we find that out?" I think it's really important to get the students to understand that while there are certain things you need to know cold as a developer, you don't have to memorize every last parameter of every API call.
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
hey @despo or @creature , a friend of mine just signed up for codebar and says he's still havent recieved a confirmation email or something, is that possible , his github name is goncalosm...
cheers
Alex Pounds
@creature
@knuxus I can see in the admin interface that he's signed up OK as a London student - I guess that's what he was aiming for? We don't send confirmation emails AFAIK but he should have got a general welcome email. This week's workshop is pretty full, but he should now have an invite that will let him join the waiting list.
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Thanks @creature he's got it
Alex Pounds
@creature
London coaches coming tonight: do any of you have a laptop that a student could use?
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
Yeah @creature of course...
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
What is the process for converting the .md files into HTML content? Thanks!
Shahmir Javaid
@shahmirj
@njacobs5074 there are many markdown converted libraries
what language are you after?
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
Ah no, I meant the codebar tutorials.
So far as I can tell they're generated from the README.md files, no?
Shahmir Javaid
@shahmirj
can you point me to a link, I am not a 100% sure
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
I'm guessing there's a script that converts the README.md into the corresponding HTML files served up on tutorials.codebar.io.
Shahmir Javaid
@shahmirj
I can't see anywhere it converts the .md files into html. Im sure there is a build step somewhere.
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1

@njacobs5074 AFAIK (and have come to unthinkingly rely on!) this is done automatically. The existing tutorials exist as .md files, and any pull requests are made to those .md files, with no further steps required.

In case it's of interest, to view .md files as I'm editing them, I use a mix of viewing the file on the github site, and plug-ins for Notepad++ and WebStorm.

Alex Pounds
@creature
@njacobs5074 Yep, @jkbits1 is correct! It's all automatic. The tutorials are basically a Jekyll install, served via Github pages. So you should be OK to preview your work in any Markdown viewer, and send a pull request without any generated HTML.
Nick Jacobs
@njacobs5074
Thanks, @jkbits1 and @creature. That makes it easy. Shiny! :sparkles:
Jacopo Nardiello
@jnardiello
Guys, I might be slightly late this evening. I'll be there sometime around 7pm.
Alex Pounds
@creature
@jnardiello: Is that prior to 7PM or just after 7PM? :) The former’s perfect, the latter makes pairing more difficult...
Jacopo Nardiello
@jnardiello
The central line was broken, I arrived late at the office, which means I'll leave from Old street at 6.15/6.20pm.
@creature Time to get to the location, so I'd say slightly before 7pm
I'm just saying it in advance so that you know. Don't really mean to complicate things further.
Alex Pounds
@creature
It’s not a problem, don’t worry. :) But we can only pair students up with coaches who are in the room. We often have students who show up a little late too, so you could always work with them.
Jacopo Nardiello
@jnardiello
fair enough. I'll see you there ;)
Alex Pounds
@creature
Quick sanity check: this week’s invite looked OK, right? The invite link was present & worked OK?
Jacopo Nardiello
@jnardiello
It did (for me at least)
Alex Pounds
@creature
@jnardiello Thanks. :) Someone emailed to say they couldn’t see the link and I got worried.
Ben Lovell
@benlovell
yep, fine here too!
Jon Kelly
@jkbits1
The link is there and works fine :smile: . It is a little more vertical and thinner than usual, perhaps that's what led to the feedback. We are giving the company logo more height this week, so maybe it's stretched it a little.
Alexander Kustov
@alexanderkustov
hey @creature those lighting talks usually come with slides, right?
Despo Pentara
@despo
@knuxus no, slides are optional
Alex Pounds
@creature
@knuxus You can have slides if you want them, but I’d keep them to a minimum as 5 minutes isn’t very long. If you prefer no slides, that’s fine too. :)
