    You may need a staging server, if it is receiving inbound traffic.
    sounds strangely circular...

    @kevin-staiger
    haha yea, so could I build a staging server in sinatra, and then include the aws-sns-hipchat sinatra app on my server app?

    @tonycchung
    Hey folks, finally working on a small project and wanted to see if anyone could suggest anything while I'm still planning things out.
    Can you build an Angular app and just use Rails for authentication and hookup to a DB? or do you have to make a full blown Rails app with Angular'd views?
    Also since Rails uses activerecord and migrations to make schema/db changes, what would be a suitable way to allow a non-dev admin user make DB changes from a web GUI? Let's say I have a tools/materials table with attributes like hammer, nails, wood, etc. I can set it up in Rails but if an admin wanted to add 'screws' or 'steel' columns to the table, is that even possible in Rails without migrations? Surely there must be an easier solution - I only really know about these things in a Rails context still. :worried:
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Heh, no by "staging server" I mean an EC2 environment that is like production, but is not actually production
    Tony, your end user should not be able to do anything that will affect the schema of the db.
    Think of it from a REST perspective. What is the user creating? How is that thing related to the other things that user can CRUD?
    kevin-staiger
    @kevin-staiger
    Oh I see, well I am working completely in an AWS test environment, so maybe I should just create an EC2 instance and try to add the sinatra app to it
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Yeah, go for it! [:
    kevin-staiger
    @kevin-staiger
    @tonycchung I just had to some authentication/authorization in angular (well I actually ignored angular and just went straight to node) but it was a pretty big pain so yea I would do it with rails if you can
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Let me know if you find any favorite resources, gents!
    Tony, the Anluarails book covers authenticaiton with Devise.
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung

    I'm so dumb. I could just make a 'Materials' table with material and quantity columns and let the admin CRUD whatever they want as a new material and make it a new row.

    I was confused because one guy was saying 'we have to make sure we can let the admin CRUD the database and add new tables/columns'

    also I searched for Anluarails but came up with nothing - is there a typo in there somewhere?

    kevin-staiger
    @kevin-staiger
    I think its angularails
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    That's the one, sorry.
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    Anyone know about coldfusion? This one company gave me a coding challenge and they want it done in coldfusion since they use it. I've done a little research on it and people say it's a dying language or alot of people just seem to hate it.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    fffuuuuuuuuuuuck that.
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    lol seriously? =\
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Yeah, walk away. You don't want to do cold fusion work.It's everything wrong with pre-rails web dev.
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    shit
    "Our stack: ColdFusion, jQuery, Python, Asterisk, MS-SQL"
    no good?
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    ew... sounds weird. Pitch them on converting to Rails.
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    that would be awesome. yeah maybe...their dev team is only 10 right now and they're looking to double it. they're called century interactive and do some sort of call tracking stuff.
    they said I could work remotely though since they're in dallas/fort worth and i could just fly in like once a quarter or something. idk i'm starting to get a little desperate....
    thanks for the advice brook

    @enilsen16
    Call tracking?
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    call tracking for marketing analytics?
    i think its saas
    Erik Nilsen
    @enilsen16
    oh ok
    I was thinking cell phone tracking
    ha
    Tony Chung
    @tonycchung
    lol nsa? idk
    Erik Nilsen
    @enilsen16
    maybe… idk lol
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    I've seen companies like that... You can put a different ph # on your mailer, and your web page, then you know how someone found you.
    Erik Nilsen
    @enilsen16
    oh thats a good idea
    twilio would make that really easy too
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    true, i think there are twillio powered sites out there doing that.
    Erik Nilsen
    @enilsen16
    That would be a really cool project
    and it wouldnt be to terribly hard to set up
    Erik Nilsen
    @enilsen16
    Has anyone tried to go through the angular-rails tutorial with ruby 2.1.3?
    For some reason it crashes at rake -T bower
    here’s the output:
    /Users/Erik/.gem/ruby/2.1.3/gems/byebug-3.5.1/lib/byebug/byebug.bundle: [BUG] Segmentation fault at 0x00000000000418
    ruby 2.1.3p242 (2014-09-19 revision 47630) [x86_64-darwin14.0]

    @enilsen16
    Looks like its a ruby 2.1.3 thing cause it works fine on ruby 2.1.2
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    yikes. Does rake -T work by itself?
    kevin-staiger
    @kevin-staiger
    @brookr do you have any experience with chef? I have a node app that I need to deploy to a domain. I have jenkins job that will create a server instance for me and I have a chef recipe that someone wrote that deploys node apps. I have been reading a lot on chef but am still pretty foggy on the general concept on how one uses a cookbook or recipe in relation with their app, do you build some sort of configuration file with parameters that reference your app? and then execute a chef command to run a cookbook? All of this is very unclear to me.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Sorry, Kevin, I don't... paging @ivanoats...
