    For the first few lab sessions I mostly sat around grading, since not many people asked for help.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Good to hear they are figuring out how to ask. Maybe I should have included Ivan's mini-lecture on "how to ask a good techinical question"...
    that's really good to know, tho! thanks for that feedback.
    Dale Corns
    @dcorns
    On the third week a student had told me that they did not want to bother the TA's too much. I told them the reason their is a 10 - 1 ratio is so the TA's can provide a lot of help and that's what they are there for...but alas it was the final week. Perhaps making something like that clear in the beginning might help also.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Man, you'd think it obvious...
    It's kind of crazy value for a $500 course, but yeah, I'll definitely call it out more explicitly next time.
    Dale Corns
    @dcorns
    Yes, I agree, but...she said it, so maybe others were thinking it also. But maybe some just think they have it covered until crunch time comes and they're not ready.
    Sam Hamm
    @samhamm
    Everything in this late thread is right on: student shyness early, course value, people freaking out at the end. It cannot be overstated that the TAs are there as student resources. Speaking as a recent student myself (and after years as an educator), it's a tough message to project, that we're there to help, and not simply evaluate. It's hard to go ask for help from the person who is also grading your work, especially without a strict grading rubric.
    Sam Hamm
    @samhamm
    In the mind of the student: "I've been instructed on this, I don't get this, and my main path for assistance is through the person to whom I must admit my difficulties in understanding their message... and who will also be evaluating my progress." Friggin' minefield. That's no criticism at all. It's the reality of the challenge of teaching.

    @samhamm
    Some students enter overconfident and need to grasp the humility of learning. Some are capable but unsure and anxious. The rest are manywheres inbetween. It's not easy to manage. I think we've done a good job of it in this class, and that Code Fellows has at its core a very solid pedagogical sensibility.

    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    For some damn reason, I can't get cfbot to activate in this channel.
    Can't tell you how sad that makes me!
    Dale Corns
    @dcorns
    I know I am broken up about it.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Well, I messed up. The outbound assessment survey didn't get published. Thanks Canvas!
    It should have gone out days ago.
    But don't publish it now, Dale has it built into the PGP app. Good work Dale!
    We are putting a little final polish on the app, before we put it in front of students.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Ok, the assignment, and the app, are finally live: https://canvas.instructure.com/courses/878545/assignments/3100753
    (someone please tell me you also see that as published...)
    Andrew Michael Potter
    @AMPotter
    I'll check it out, gimme a sec.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    thanks.
    Andrew Michael Potter
    @AMPotter
    Looks good!
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Great, thanks, Anderw.
    The TA side of the app isn't really in place, but students can at least start making submissions.
    Andrew Michael Potter
    @AMPotter
    Cool. Will you post here when the TA side is ready to go?
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Hopefully people will be able to do it today/tomorrow.
    and Dale and I will continue work on the TA side.
    Yes, we'll let you know.
    Andrew Michael Potter
    @AMPotter
    Sweet.
    Nicholas Harberg
    @harberg
    Assignment is showing up on my end.
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Please remind your cohorts about the survey assignment today.
    Also, you can now create accounts in the PGP app, and we'll set your role to TA directly in the back end database. The pages to create a plan aren't accessible yet, but you can see what the students are answering, and we can start to collect our favorite resources to share.
    Nicholas Harberg
    @harberg
    Just created an account. Once my role is changed I assume what I view will be different?
    Samantha Camus
    @xdothackerx
    Created my account as well~
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Great, I've got Andrew, Zach, Nick, Samantha, and Bryan set as TAs in the system.
    Stay tuned for word from @dcorns on when the TA side will be accessible.
    Diana

    @brookr i created an account a few days ago too

    @dcorns
    I expect to have the PGP creation feature deployed later today or early tommorrow
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Yay, thanks, Dale!
    Samantha Camus
    @xdothackerx
    So if students don't have things turned in by the 15th, are we supposed to give them 0 points/incomplete, or just leave them ungraded...?
    Samantha Camus
    @xdothackerx
    Also, only one of my students has turned in their self-assessment for personal growth plan. Should we expect to have those before we try to write PGPs for them?
    And, are those sent to CF directly? Because all that was said by the one student who DID turn it in was "Finished my assessment! Please review. :)"
    Brook Riggio
    @brookr
    Actually, you can give 0s for uncompleted work NOW.
    Your plan for anyone with outstanding work should mainly be: "Work through the assignments from class, here's some extra related resources"
