It took me a while, but I found a hacky workaround: make a synchronous request to a data url.
I created a repo and sent a link to webodf.

Yup! On a different note, I was thinking about differentiation; and nowadays what people do is no longer to create a .doc and send it by email. Instead, they (or at least I) create a GDoc and share a link to it. So, we should try to push that "publishing" forward as much as possible. Given that our native format is html, we might as well use javascript to add interactivity -- the most basic example being hover things on charts, more fancy would be if you could change parameters to a chart as the reader. Other things are adding inline youtube videos or webm's, and just in general making the published page look pretty.
