Is there a way to change the structure of a required library
and have composer update the existing files in their new location, without recreating them?

you want to change structure (move it's internal stuff around) or install library in custom location instead of /vendor?

I want to move stuff around
I actually don’t want this myself.
I’m being requested to do this.
I’d like to live things in place, and not create headache.

as far as I know there's no other way than running some postprocessing script and it might prove being problematic
internally, even when using things like composer/installers you only determine whole target directory
not much control beyond that that I know of

I don’t have much experience with phar, as in, none
can you have a phar for laravel?
and have composer pick up the namespacing from it?
