    I had a technical pb and could not finish the session
    could you let me know where are the teams and how to join them? I do not see those in the doc

    Julien Frisch: -- we had to end before the teams were formed because of time constraints
    so, what we're doing now is identifying teams

    On the last page I made a table
    you can put your name next to the project(s) you're interested in

    are you adding to the doc atm?
    spectie

    I'm doing them in number order to fit in with the numbered list
    yeah
    i'm just copying the titles down
    people can start adding their names

    is there an on-ramp or someone to reach out to if we know of someone who regularly works / interfaces with communities of marginalized languages? I've got a friend who is fluent in spanish and english who took the decision to apply her medical training to the indigenous in Colombia. I mentioned this to her and she said the idea sounds very interesting. I don't know if there are any grants, or other resources, or standardized 'howto' that someone can start to contribute a new language

    It is generally a lengthy process, I don't know of any HOWTOs or even if one is possible.
    Justin Riddiough
    @justinriddiough
    Hmm

    In my experience, the first step is to get to know the people and listen to them, without talking about anything about what you think is best or what needs to be done.
    Unfortunately that doesn't really fit into the "goal oriented" way of doing things that we learn at university or in society in general.
    Once you get to know people and they know you, they'll ask questions and they'll know about what you can do and how you can help them, if it so happens that they need help.
    Justin Riddiough
    @justinriddiough
    That makes sense, as its desirable to have a general take. I thought though also something that was more oriented towards medical interviews could have value for this reason, that for example they could call and describe symptoms or something like this

    There are lots of possible ideas, but it's impossible to know without direct access to lived experience (in my opinion).
    The less you directly know going in, the more potential there is for harmful interventions.
    I guess my biggest advice would be "drop all your assumptions and learn from the people through normal social interaction"
    but yeah, there are a thousand ways that can be difficult to awkward
    Justin Riddiough
    @justinriddiough
    Hmm well, I imagine that would be really nice but quite a costly method. Not many have the resources to truly get to know other cultures, let alone the indigenous or marginalized.
    spectie
    @spectie:matrix.org
    [m]
    Yeah, but in that case it's probably better to apply talents closer to home :)
    Justin Riddiough
    @justinriddiough
    I don't completely understand, in the situation I mentioned it is a person with direct access to those lived experiences. Surely there should be more opportunity for input than language tourists

    🚨 🚨 🚨 It is important we form teams today. 🚨 🚨 🚨

    spectie added a table to the bottom of the Google doc to make this easier.

    If you haven't picked a team by the end of the day (California time) I will be go ahead and add you to a team where your skills match.

    Please ping me on email josh@coqui.ai or here with any questions!

    I'm not trying to be confrontational, I'm just giving my opinion. I don't have a monopoly on the right answers, I can just share my experience and beliefs. :)
    Justin Riddiough
    @justinriddiough
    of course I think it was me who was confrontational and not meaning offense, just digging into idea thanks for sharing your thoughts

    Heya. I'm retiring for the evening, but I have been considering the project ideas. Tough choices here, but I think my final call is that I'd be equally happy on Tic-Tac-Toe or Affirmations, and I will defer to facilitation beyond that. Thanks and goodnight to everyone!
    Oh, special mention for the ad lib story. That was my last-eliminated, I really love the idea but am a bit afraid to approach it under a time constraint.

    yeah it's hard to squeeze some of these in the time constraints, but I'm confident teams will succeed 💪
    I've also finished facilitating teams, based on interests and skill sets

    Congratulations to our #HackThePlanet winning team: Team Tichyen 🐶

    Their winning submission was a voice enabled chess application (with straightforward extension to multiple languages) 🔥

    More information will be coming early next week about their project

    Both Coqui and the Common Voice team want to thank all participants for joining in on this hackathon. From those who hacked tirelessly through the week to those who helped brainstorm during the MozFest session, all of you have helped push awareness and support for low resource languages in speech technology 💚
