    Hello team Gah!
    Jaron
    @jpowser_gitlab

    Prompt: make a game or an i.e. building locator using Indigenous names from Arizona [deviations/pivots permitted]
    Deadline: March 15

    I am leaning toward a game, that opens up a pretty rich tapestry. I am very pro-gamification as a support for language acquisition. I gotta leave it there for the evening, looking forward to the week ahead.

    díí gah át’é! Nizhóní! < this is rabbit! It is good!>
    game = yes
    the 'building locator using Indigenous names from Arizona' idea could have a nice application here as the Uni is working with Tribes to name buildings on campus; but to date only one building has officially gotten it's indigenous name.
    I think I could get a list of other names in the queue
    and the app could help students learn how to pronounce the names and what they mean?
    Amy Fountain
    @amyfou
    the first name is Ñi'okĭ Ma:cig Ki:, and the language is Tohono O'odham
    [the building houses the communication and ling depts - Ñi'okĭ = language, communication, talking; Ma:cig = to study, investigate, learn; Ki: = house, home, building; together 'the place/a home for the study of language, communication, speech'. Something like that]
    ...but ^^ is a small idea, parochial and not maybe what we want to drive this project.
    [deviations/pivots recommended] :)

    Taking Val out for a bit and then I'll be back here to help with planning
    I love everything I've read so far.

    Hi 👋, sorry for being late.
    My name is Thorsten, living in Germany and being not an active participant in this session. But as member of Coqui TTS maybe i can help with questions in that field. I'm not always online in this chat but will try to respond to questions as soon as i can. Good luck with this challenge ✊.

    @amyfou: @jpowser_gitlab -- I think you're on to something here:)

    There's a great hack I can think of to help with speech-to-text (STT) for any of the Arizonan indigenous languages.

    You take the English STT model here [1], and you change out the "scorer" (which holds the vocabulary) for a scorer which contains only names of the buildings.

    You won't be able to get real-time pronunciation feedback, but you'll be able to recognize when someone said "Ñi'okĭ Ma:cig Ki:" vs "díí gah át’é Nizhóní", for example

    so the app would have people say the name of the building, and could pull up info about the building and the name itself. you could display pronunciation feedback in text form, if that's interesting:)

    Thank you, and sorry for the delay in my return. I got swept up in ongoing sessions, but I am still very focused here. This is my "primary commitment", and I'm next trying to bump web monetization. I am also trying to help with the Ukraine group, but very cautiously b/c I have legal constraints from my military background.
    I am really burned out today, so I am getting away from the screens earlier than usual. I'm going to print (yep, w/ink... thanks Dave Eckhardt, Operating Systems @CMU) some excerpts from this chat and sketch some ideas. I will scan them in and post either tonight or early in the morning. Does anyone have requests or suggestions of/for me otherwise?

    @jpowser_gitlab: mozfest can be an overload -- I hope you rest up well!

    I'd suggest sketching out a minimal viable project, think about where it will run (mobile vs laptop... in the browser?) and think about how you can integrate the core tech Team Gah is building on:
    input               --->       STT         --->             output
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    spoken name of                                             text transcript
    building in Native Am ---> STT ---> of building name
    language into microphone

    hi @amyfou and @jpowser_gitlab 👋 let me know if there's anything you're stuck on and I/we can help unblock:)

    @jpowser_gitlab
    Understood! Thanks. I am at my desk working.
    I guess today ended up being "environment" setup. It was pretty literal in this case. I suppose today could have been the rest I needed as well, I can't believe what time it is. I've just been kind of deliberately away from the festival so I could think for a while.

    Your monospace block reads like beautiful Perl poetry to me right now.

    @Team-Gah-- I'm happy to compile the custom language models needed/ That's something that I'd hope you are able to abstract away from during the hackathon:) to be fair I'm saying the same to all teams :)
    aka -- if you can get me a text file, with one line per "building/phrase" in the languages your working on, I will get you one language model per language that recognizes all (and only) those buildings/phrases

    My heart is heavy with anticipation, but I think the right thing for me to do right now is to shut down until tomorrow.

    Hiya. I think I might have to bail on the hackathon and make this a post-Mozfest situation. I am having a lot of banking and credit card trouble all of a sudden, and I was already stressed out. I am sorry that I won't be able to form a deliverable under the projected timeline, but I just really need some time to assess priorities. I also have a very important medical appointment on the 15th, and after all of this excitement, I think I need to put some buffer space before and after.
    I even pared my MVP concept down to like a really intricate powerpoint, but I really just think I need some distance.
    I also think we should monetize SVG instead of JS (or at least in addition to, but I'm trying to throw a bone to the conservative side of the argument; it preserves a little more of the "Old Money" in branding and advertising, the way I'm looking at it. I really don't care either way on that issue, I like the project enough already. This is really just a spurious thought, but I like it.)
    I don't even have a working mobile phone right now, so yeah, maybe I should take a little time before trying to hack this one together.

    @jpowser_gitlab
    I've been here on 10Mbps the whole time, don't really know why, keep trying to figure it out when I get an idea, but I really just need to call the ISP and never feel like doing that.
    So yeah, my wife has been working internationally while I've been an asshole at MozFest and also occasionally playing Switch and streaming mad HD video and audio.... on 10 down and 20ish up for some reason! isn't that especially absurd? Anyway, you can see where my head has been. I'm sorry to leave abruptly, but I just have things to take care of I've been putting off to be here.
    Jaron
    @jpowser_gitlab
    honestly, I'd really love to help but I can't get ten minutes to think in this country. How the hell am I supposed to get ten hours? bye for now. It will remain jpowser@pm.me

    Hey jpowser_gitlab (Jaron) — thank you for the message, and you have to do what works for you. We definitely appreciate your enthusiasm and interest, and we also know that life happens - and this hackathon isn’t the end all be all! Don’t worry at all about having to leave, really!

    We will be thrilled to see you back in the community at any time:)
