I ended up making the following toggle button:

display(HTML('''<script>
code_show=true;
function code_toggle() {
 if (code_show){
 $('div.input').hide();
 $('div.cell').css("flex-direction", "row");
 $('div.output').css("width", "700px");
 } else {
 $('div.input').show();
 $('div.cell').css("flex-direction", "column");
 $('div.output').css("width", "100%");
 }
 code_show = !code_show
}
$( document ).ready(code_toggle);
</script>
<form action="javascript:code_toggle()">
    <input type="submit" value="Slide setup (on/off)">
</form>'''))

With this I was able to hide code and display the output alongside the widgets... not sure if this is a good way to go about it...
