Nov 19 2015 05:51
who is going to the webaudio hack day?
Chinmay Pendharkar
@notthetup
Nov 19 2015 05:51
yes! works really well on Edge!!! \o/
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:51
it is not called Audio as there is an audio element. This one has an API but didn't enable people to create sounds dynamically
Andre Marcelo-Tanner
@kzap
Nov 19 2015 05:51
Is there a React implementation of WebAudio :D
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:52
The problem with <audio> was that it didn't play seamlessly in a loop and on iOS you needed to click to activate the sound because of interaction patents
Ronald Allan Mojica
@mojics
Nov 19 2015 05:52
@kzap it's like is there a React Implementation of CreateJS
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:52
so webaudio was needed to play background sounds for games for example
Chinmay Pendharkar
@notthetup
Nov 19 2015 05:52
oh i didn't know that was because of patents!
@kzap i saw there was something
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:52
there is no webvideo as you can't create video on the fly - yet
Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 05:53
@codepo8 interaction patents. what.
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:53
you can create GIFs frame by frame
Lim Chee Aun
@cheeaun
Nov 19 2015 05:53
Perhaps there should be WebGIFs
Chinmay Pendharkar
@notthetup
Nov 19 2015 05:53
@kzap but can't seem to find it.. might be a great thing to create at the webaudio hack day
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:53
and someone also created an MPEG1 encoder/decoder in JS. There was a talk about it at State of the Browser 2015 in London.
cheeaun there was x-GIF - http://geelen.github.io/x-gif/#/http://i.imgur.com/iKXH4E2.gif - a webcomponent making GIFs controllable by splitting them into DIVs with each frame as a background :)

@notthetup ty just asking as its might be a great abstration to all the code :D :D

err on windows, not ios
Chinmay Pendharkar
@notthetup
Nov 19 2015 05:55

TonyQ Wang
@tony1223
Nov 19 2015 05:56
@kzap try to organize a document or memo for section based contents and share with others. it's just a multiple-user document system, like google doc but better in multiple user editing.
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 05:56
of course you can abstract all of that into easier APIs, but the idea about WebAudio is that you have full granular control. This makes it hard to understand, but really makes it powerful.
Part of the extensible web manifesto thinking - give developers lots of small, granular APIs and allow them to build the next web.
Andre Marcelo-Tanner
@kzap

can someone share how compatible is web audio with the modern browsers out there?
pretty good atcually

Chinmay Pendharkar
@notthetup
Nov 19 2015 06:06
Edge FTW!
@kzap So the main challenge in WebAudio is always scheduling, the Node graph is pretty transient. Not sure how react model will map to it.

Nov 19 2015 07:03
For the very least, new beginners should never touch var, arguments, call/apply, prototype class, and callbacks
Lim Chee Aun
@cheeaun
Nov 19 2015 07:04
Hmm callbacks too?
Zell Liew
@zellwk
Nov 19 2015 07:05
Hm. Maybe you'd want to throw them a simple ES6 -> ES5 starter (at least a link) as well
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 07:05
callback is too advanced IMO. they should learn closures and first class functions first before touching callback
Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 07:05
@cheeaun node-style callbacks are dead outside node.
Lim Chee Aun
@cheeaun
Nov 19 2015 07:06

Nov 19 2015 07:06
function and closure are the same as ES5 right?
Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 07:06
yes
Christian Heilmann

Nov 19 2015 07:07
I just feel that people need to learn callbacks, then promises, in order
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 07:07
some are needlessly complex, though.
Maythee Anegboonlap
@llun
Nov 19 2015 07:07

Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 07:08
babel good.
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 07:08
typescript if you want to go into production directly.
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 07:08
@codepo8 yes there are many ES6 resources, but they mostly target existing JavaScript programmers rather than first time beginners
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 07:08
es6/babel if you want to tinker more yourself.
Lim Chee Aun
@cheeaun
Nov 19 2015 07:08
At least learn why we don't use callbacks?
Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 07:09
@cheeaun nobody suggesting there's stuff you don't need to learn, just that learning curve for promises likely lower than that for callbacks
Maythee Anegboonlap
@llun
Nov 19 2015 07:09
Put it in Javascript bad part πŸ˜…
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 07:09
thing is it is hard to do practical work without using async, i.e. HTTP request or read file
Tim Oxley
@timoxley
Nov 19 2015 07:09
depends on which language's baggage you're bringing to JS
Christian Heilmann
@codepo8
Nov 19 2015 07:10
I'll be talking about this, but FWIW I think it is important to teach beginners the role of JavaScript on the web and not only the syntax. The web is a medium, HTML, CSS and JS all have their own - important - roles to play. By moving our education to JS only we lose a lot of valuable talent. The web was meant to be a publishing platform for everybody - not only computer scientists.
Claudio Mettler
@ponyfleisch

Christian Heilmann

pure functions dont modify state? is that the main def?
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 08:13
pure functions have no side effects, i.e. calling the function with the same input always return the same result
Andre Marcelo-Tanner
@kzap
Nov 19 2015 08:13
i knowthat one but is there a more laymans explanation? :)
or whats a non pure function example?
Soares Chen
@soareschen

lol
Andre Marcelo-Tanner
@kzap
Nov 19 2015 08:16
so if it uses something which can return a different value even with the same inputs means its not pure?
here's one i found that makes more sense to me: Any function that affects any state other than the state of the inputs or outputs is a non-pure function.
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 08:22
Yeah. For example querying the database, fetching http requests, or any I/O operations that interact with the world
Simon Swain
@simonswain
Nov 19 2015 08:23
console.log?
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 08:23
yup
most functions that take no parameter are also impure
Ed Moore
@eddiemoore
Nov 19 2015 08:25
basically a function given the same values, should return the same result everytime
Andre Marcelo-Tanner
@kzap
Nov 19 2015 08:27
you can return the same value and change global state :)
Soares Chen
@soareschen
Nov 19 2015 08:28
that would still be impure, because it has side effects

@zz85 Chrome uses raster-based chromatic fonts for emoji (basically a set of PNG images at various sizes) and gives up when the largest size is exceeded. Similar for Safari (but it upsamples the raster image for large ones).
